Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem,
This is most definitely a book that is necessary for every Muslim (yes, that includes the men) to read given the social and political climate we are currently facing. The reason I say that men should also read this book, is because men need to be aware of the attack on Muslim women such that they are equipped to help the women in their lives make the best choices and be a good example for them. The content Sheikh al-Buti lays out throughout the book emphasizes how important and vital real men are to our community. Women need men, and men need women. It's important for both genders to understand the struggles of the other such that we can act as a shield to one another. The thoughts, feelings, beliefs and behaviours of Muslim men greatly affect the thoughts, feelings, beliefs, behaviours and sentiments of Muslim women. Ultimately, if Muslim men are asleep or misbehaving then it becomes enormously easier for Western imperialism to pull our sisters away from the straight path.
Sheikh al-Buti begins the book by outlining the importance of hijab and then describes the orientalist propaganda against Islam, more specifically Muslim women. He does an excellent job at displaying the evidences necessary to show the reader that the Western intellectual invasion is real, and it's still happening. I always find it refreshing when other Muslims create awareness to the seemingly less obvious maneuvers of the West.
Overall the book was very beneficial, however I rated it at 4 stars because I found that the way the Sheikh represented the fiqh on hijab to be one sided. Due to his explanation it is easy for the one who is familiar with Islamic movements to gauge which train of thought the Sheikh is approaching this topic with. For the sake of promoting unity amongst other Muslims I will omit any titles. My point is, when we write about fiqh in any text we must represent the fiqh fairly. It is not the job of any Muslim to market their opinion, it is our job to explain Islam as best as we can and clarify it to the people.
Sheikh al-Buti does an excellent job at tackling Feminism from a historical and more political perspective but it is imperative that we address the claims made by Feminists more directly. It is also important to note that the political issues regarding Muslim women even just a decade ago are different than today. As Muslims in Da'wah, we are required to constantly be aware of what is going on so we know how to tackle relevant issues. This is not meant to be taken as something negative, I truly believe the Sheikh did an excellent job presenting his points but this critique is made merely to emphasize how critical it is for more Muslims to continue to write about this topic! A Sheikh from Syria is going to approach this topic from his perspective, however, studied and Islamically sound Muslim women in the West are at a clear advantage to refute Feminist and Orientalist attacks on Muslim women. I say this because we (Muslim women living in the West) are the ones who experience this reality, we are the ones who live with non-Muslims and understand them. The same way Allah SWT sent a Prophet or Messenger from among their people to to every nation. We too as Du'at are best equipped to address the pains and struggles of those who are from our same or similar upbringing whether they are Muslim or not.
InshAllah this book serves as a good resource to every Muslim looking to expand their knowledge in this field, and I pray Allah SWT allows us to write our own works for His sake, for His cause ameen.
