it's been a few years since my last rewatch of the serie so i completely forgot what happened in the episode this book is based on.
i thought i would be laughing through it like the previous ones, but i found this one much more dark and depressing than the others.
this is literally one of the best example of how merlin comes to lose his spark, like. camelot literally makes him learn to fear for his life, keep to himself and mistrust others. day after day. year after year. no wonder arthur's barely seen him "smile these past three days" in the last season. there's nothing to smile about when one wrong move could get you or your loved ones killed, just because of fearmongering and a madman in power's misplaced guilt. and yet you still have to stay and act as if nothing's wrong, because you have a chance to change it all and this is the price. or so you were told. but is it really worth it, in the end ?
how can you live through this and not let it radicalise you ? how can you stand by and do nothing ? how can you avoid fear to take roots in your heart ?
is it really surprising that [redacted] turned out the way they did ? (yes they still had a choice, not arguing that, but still. after everything, after the fear and the hate, wouldn't you want it all to burn to the ground, too, if you had the chance ?)
looking back, i don't know how gwen does it. especially knowing what comes after, what it will cost her. like my girl got wronged and almost sentenced to death by the madman in command and still she has to bounce back, stay and act as if it's just another tuesday ??? EXCUSE ME !?!?!?!? i know she doesn't really have a choice being a servant and all BUT STILL. how could camelot still feel like home after all this ?
all this to say never forget who's the real villain in all this : UTHER PENDRAGON. FUCK YOU UTHER PENDRAGON YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DID !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! once again wondering why his enemies don't target HIM directly and always settle for arthur or his people. like do us all a favor and get us rid of him once and for all !!!
Fun to read as a cozy reminder of the film but found the writing style not quite up to scratch and some things they’d tried to add in didn’t quite work for the characters. Rated mostly for fondness of it but think more effort could have been put into the production of the book.
When we started this series I was not aware that there were various authors but so far my great grandson is enjoying them. We were also not aware this is a tie in to a TV series.
The Mark of Nimeuh is a novelisation of the Merlin tv episode of the same name.
As with the other novelisation of Merlin episodes this is a straight retelling of the tv episode in prose form.
The book is well written and is rather pacy and is a pretty good version of the story which I believe works as a story in its own right.
If you fancy short, fantasy books then why not give this a try, even if you have never seen the tv series this is based upon, you might even want to go and catch it after reading this!
This book/episode is leading up to one of my favorites. I love ......the poisoned chalice, which turns out my copy of that just arrived today XD eep!! but anyway, I liked being in the head of the baddie again and Nimueh is so much cooler then the old lady in The Dragon's call or Valiant. and there were more scenes written than just the scenes in the episode which was really really cool.
As a long time fan of the show, this was really fun to read :) I don't like to use the words guilty pleasure, but if I had to choose mine, it would be TV series tie-ins, just like this one. There's something I really like in reading the novelization of my favourite shows, even though it's not a regular book.
