I very rarely read Christmas themed novels, even at that time of year let alone mid year, but this one sounded like fun. And it was. Shell Smith is the artist on the ART counter at Duke and Sons, an established, if old fashioned, department store. The business is in trouble and old Mr Duke brings in his grandson Callum Duke to try and help revive it. Meanwhile Shell wonders what the future holds as a Nick, love from the past, is back in town. Amid the creative ways Callum has devised to perk up sales is a film for which he recruits Shell’s help. Can Duke and Sons be saved? And when it comes to romance what does the future hold for Shell?
After two rather dark and gritty atmospheric novels it was a relief to come to something light. I enjoyed my time with Shell, her coworkers, friends and family. Duke and Sons is very much a character as it dominates proceedings. I did feel one of Shell’s friends was a rather unnecessary creation but apart from that I loved reading this light, fun filled book. Even though a tad predictable I was happy to just be swept along by the story.
Should appeal to anyone who likes stories with great characters and an interesting setting and of course a Christmas theme. Sometimes in reading we just need to balance the types of books we read. This was the case for me and I appreciated the change of pace and the rom com feel. A recommended read that is sure to delight many readers.

A totally delightful Christmas romance - I loved how real Shell felt, and how rich her life was. It's unusual to see heroines with such a solid group of friends and family as well as romantic relationships - I had a great time with this book and would recommend it heartily! (15+)

I loved this! Just utterly loved it. It's a Christmas romance, obviously, set in an old-fashioned British department store. Shell, the chief make up artist, falls for Callum the newly-arrived-from-California soon-to-be-owner (though it's really Shell's story). It's low-to-zero conflict, full of delightful characters who sound like real people, and surprisingly atmospheric with it. It really captures that very British, low-key, sparkles-and-Santa run-up-to-Christmas feel (and all the more palpably for the fact none of us are having our normal December right now). I enjoyed the hell out of it and was very disappointed to find this is the author's only book for adults (so far?).
(Also, Shell is brown (and most of her friends too!) and fat, and this *isn't* one of those stupid romances where that's her story. It's so refreshing and it makes the story feel real.)

This was hugely fun! A body positive, diverse and distinctly English Christmas rom-com, which combines all of my favourite tropes - behind the scenes on a movie! Working at a department store! Christmas fair hijinks! Plus lush descriptions of make up and beauty (I now desperately want a Gucci bag, for the first time in my life). A really warm-hearted feel-good read.

Che bello inaugurare le letture natalizie con un libro frizzante e pieno di vita come questo. Lizzie Byron è una ventata d’aria fresca con tutto il suo anticonformismo.
Ve la ricordate Bridget Jones e le sue disavventure, soprattutto amorose? Bene, Shell è il suo alter ego, veramente disastrosa ma un vulcano di energia che emana positività, quindi, buon divertimento!
Shell Smith lavora nel centro commerciale elitario Duke & Sons a Ostley in Inghilterra. Ama truccare e truccarsi, gestisce insieme all’amico, collega e Drag Queen nel tempo libero Ricky, un beauty shop di nome Art, che a onor del vero un bel po’ kitsch. Piuttosto sovrappeso, si è lasciata alle spalle il periodo del liceo, in cui si nascondeva e si vergognava dei suoi chili di troppo. Ora balda e fiera indossa tute gialle, abiti aderenti e colori sgargianti, ha iniziato ad apprezzarsi dopo il suo amore adolescenziale finito male. Gli basta stare alla larga da Nick Wallace ma lui è tornato in città.
Se ciò non bastasse Callum, l’erede del vecchio signor Duke suo datore di lavoro, sta prendendo le redini dell’attività di famiglia, questo cambiamento naturalmente crea preoccupazione tra i dipendenti, aggiungiamo per Shell uno scombussolamento ormonale dovuto al fascino da elegante principe azzurro porta con sé.
Il libro è divertente, spensierato, e io mi sono ritrovata a divorare le pagine perché Shell è catalizzante con i suoi amici mai banali e la sua goffaggine. C’è lo spazio per un piccolo e vero miracolo di Natale perché il centro commerciale è in piedi da tantissimi anni ma non naviga in buone acque, proprio nel prologo si percepisce l’atmosfera e l’importanza del Natale nella storia della famiglia Duke.
Un accenno devo farlo alla famiglia di Shell, lei vive ancora con i suoi che sono giovani e sanno come spronarla quando le cose non vanno proprio per il verso giusto. Sorelle e fratelli gemelli sono la ciliegina sulla torta e fanno in modo che esca fuori il lato dolce e affettuoso della protagonista.
C’è un triangolo amoroso, formato da un single incallito e narcisista, e Callum un uomo confortante e sempre gentile nei confronti di Shell.
Ci vuole tempo per sbrogliare le emozioni e venire a capo della situazione, e sul percorso ci saranno tante brutte figure da parte del vulcano Shell e il Natale che si riconferma il periodo magico per eccellenza.
‘La bacia su una guancia e in quel momento, nel breve sussulto di calore mentre la sua bocca la sfiora e poi scompare così com’è venuta, Shell capisce. E in quell’istante la porta che non sapeva di avere nel cuore si apre e dietro c’è lui.’
L’autrice usa uno pseudonimo per questa sua unica pubblicazione, in realtà è un’autrice inglese LGBT che osa e sa come entrare nei cuori delle lettrici. C’è una sua frase nei ringraziamenti che è un invito ad accettarsi per quello che siamo, sempre.
‘se avete mai avuto il dubbio di occupare troppo spazio, com’è capitato a me, spero che leggiate questo romanzo e vi rendiate conto che meritate ogni centimetro.’
Se amate il Natale come la sottoscritta e le Rom Com veramente esilaranti, non potete proprio farvelo sfuggire.

There’s a quote in this book, which to me, perfectly sums it up : “The joy isn’t in predicting the happy ending. It’s in knowing that it’s coming”
This is a lovely story about finding love at Christmas time. While slightly predictable, the feel-good factor is just perfect for a Christmas tale.
The imagery in the book is wonderful. I find myself wanting desperately to do my Christmas shopping at a place as magical as Duke & Sons - to see the beautiful Christmas decorations, and meeting Santa, or to take part in Christmas carols in their annual White Christmas. It sounds idyllic.
This was a feel-good read that has me eagerly anticipating Christmas and the joy it brings.

Molto moderno e finalmente con due protagonisti non triti e ritriti. Una lei normale, tratti fisici normali, pelle non chiarissima, famiglia mista e numerosa, non ricca ma che sa farsi strada nel suo lavoro, usando il cervello, e che riesce a sottrarsi a un rapporto non sano; un lui bello ma dolcissimo, educato, onesto. L'ambientazione natalizia in un grande magazzino un po' agée fa il resto. Veramente carino a tratti ironico, un rapporto di attrazione celebrale e non primariamente erotico. Usa solo qualche termine volgare di troppo ma glielo si perdona volentieri perché il contenuto c'è. Ovviamente, per trovarlo interessante deve piacere il genere, quello è. Ma è ben scritto (un po' lungo in certe parti) e soprattutto positivo.

Il Natale si sta avvicinando e finalmente anche nella sua vita sembra essere arrivata la felicità dopo che Nick, suo grande amico dai tempi del college, è tornato e le ha chiesto di uscire. A portare le nuvole in questo cielo sereno è l’inaspettata crisi che coinvolge il grande magazzino e l’arrivo prorompente di Callum Duke, nipote del vecchio Mr Duke, il quale per risollevare le sorti della proprietà di famiglia evitando i licenziamenti del personale ha pensato bene di ospitare il set di una commedia romantica proprio tra le storiche mura del “Duke&Sons”.
“Sei entrato nella mia vita e non me ne sono nemmeno accorta né ho dovuto cambiare chi sono o farti spazio.”
Bastoncini di zucchero, decorazioni ad alto impatto visivo, tante chiacchiere e sullo sfondo la gente che si dedica allo shopping, sono questi gli elementi che, assieme alla trama, rendono questo romanzo davvero piacevole.
Shell ha da sempre la passione del make up. Si dedica al suo lavoro con determinazione e cerca sempre di dare il massimo con le sue clienti. “Genuina”, profondamente legata alla famiglia tanto da non vergognarsi di vivere ancora nella casa dei genitori, è un’amica sincera e solare sempre pronta a trascorrere le serate in compagnia dei colleghi. Riguardo la vita amorosa, purtroppo le cose per lei non sembrano andare per il verso giusto poiché, dopo una serie di appuntamenti fallimentari, si è fossilizzata su Nick e su un rapporto, il loro, complesso e non esattamente idilliaco.
Callum irrompe sulla scena e sconvolge ben presto il tessuto narrativo. Uomo sicuro di sé, porta il frutto dei suoi studi ed esperienze, oltre che la modernità, al servizio di un ambiente fortemente tradizionale, d’altronde per un uomo ormai anziano, appartenente a un’altra generazione, non è affatto semplice concepire la sola idea che il grande magazzino possa avere canali social o addirittura divenire set di un film.
Il rapporto tra Shell e Callum è fatto di momenti lavorativi e altri più personali. L’uomo dimostra dal primo istante di nutrire grande stima nei suoi confronti oltre a essere, in barba al ruolo che ricopre, un ottimo punto di riferimento umano.
Lo stile della prosa è semplice e scorrevole. I numerosi momenti esilaranti ben si accompagnano ad altri nei quali si affrontano temi più complesse come le dinamiche familiari, l’elaborazione del lutto o il rapporto col proprio corpo.
Un romanzo ben costruito. Una lettura con la quale il lettore può trovare la giusta dose di evasione quotidiana.

3.5 stars. This was a cute, lovely, sweet and inclusive christmassy romcom, with a charming lead and a memorable cast of characters. It was a little schmaltzy for me, but that's just my personal taste, and it's a Christmas romance, so it suits! I loved it; I love this author and I can't wait to see what she does next under this name, if anything.

Shell is a successful make up artist at a department store, Duke & Sons. While her department is doing great, this can’t be said for the rest of the store. Mr. Duke Jr knows that unless their sales get better during Christmas time, there is no way of saving the business. For this reason he decides to rent the space as a set of a RomCom movie, and it’s in that moment that Shell realises that Mr Duke Jr is much more than black suits. But saving the business is not the only worry on Shell’s list, her ex boyfriend, Nick, is in town.
First Christmas book of the year, no wait actually first Christmas book ever, and it was perfect!
Cheesy enough, funny and with a message which got to me strong and clear about body positivity!
The real star of the book was for me the department store, Duke & Son, which clearly was a milestone for the village and the characters. It was amazing to see how everyone tried to pull together to save the business and how in doing this they built a new family.
Only thing I would have changed about this book, would have been substituting the external narrator with Shell’s point of view. I think it would have made the reader’s relationship with the characters more intimate.
A must for the lovers of cheesy romantic books 😍

As much as enjoyed getting to know Shell and Callum, for me the real start of this book is Dukes and Son, the department store.
I really cared about the store and all of its employees futures, and loved hearing about all of Callum's new bright ideas.
The new Christmas decorations are stunning and sounded like what you may expect to see on Oxford Street, London, and not ins Osterley.
Shell and Ricky are fabulous larger than life characters that had me really hooked on seeing what may happen to them.
There is a lot to love about this book and if you are someone who enjoys a book set at Christmas, but doesn't want to star reading them too early - I will say this didn't give me great big festive feels but it was still most definitely worth of having Christmas in the title.
This was my first book from the author, and I'm certain it won't be my last.

So, so sweet and wonderful. Loved Shell, loved her family, friends and loved the romance. If you want to read a book “about a brown fat girl living her best life who falls in love without having to change a thing about herself” with all the joy of the holiday season, give this a try! Also, a minor point that I really appreciated was the compassion for the obnoxious female character (seems to be rival, thin, white, holds up her dieting as an insult) who would have received none in your typical rom-com.

Un libro che ti porta a vivere una bella avventura. bellissimo interessante che ti fa vivere la vera festa il vero Natale dove nascono e si consolidano amicizie, nuovi amori. Dove troviamo una famiglia numerosa dolce caotica immersa nella vita comunitaria. Ti da l'idea di vivere un pezzo di vita americana la descrizione del negozio è spettacolare sembra di vivere in una favola. I protagonisti sono un continuo rincorrersi ma sono ben costruiti e la storia costruita intorno a loro perfetta.

Sarebbe un bellissimo libro se non fosse ambientato sotto Natale perché è proprio in questo che l'autrice pecca. Se pensate di star per leggere una tipica storia d'amore sotto l'albero, beh rimarrete delusi. Non dico che volevo gli stessi identici cliché di tutti i romanzi del genere ma qui lo Spirito Natalizio nemmeno si sente.

Duke and Sons department store has been around for decades, always beautiful but nowadays looking a bit old-fashioned. Shell Smith has been working at Duke and Sons ever since she was a teenager, working her way up to head of her own beauty counter. When Old Mr Duke announces his grandson Callum will be taking over the store and bringing in a lot of changes, the employees of Duke and Sons are dismayed. But Shell can see Callum is just desperately trying to hold onto the store, terrified of disappointing his grandfather. In the run-up to Christmas, Shell will have to go deep to save her job, the store and her heart.

This is a charming festive read, with a touch of old-fashionedness about it, which is meant as a compliment. The nostalgic element comes from it being set in a department store, most of which are making their valiant last stand their days. Also, there's decency and loyalty, on the whole, which are good old fashioned values so sadly lacking in modern (political) life.
The characters are fascinating, especially our heroine, but eveyone has a slightly eccentric role to play in keeping us entertained.

This was a lovely and funny Christmas read. I loved Shell and her family and I loved how the default in this book was for people to be kind to one another. There is very low drama and I love the aspect of the old-fashioned family department store. This is the second book I read this month about people working in a department store (though the other, Business As Usual, was set in the 1930s) and they had echoes of each other and I found both wonderful reads, despite the very different time periods. It took a little bit to get used to the third person present tense, but overall this was the perfect light read for a COVID Christmas day.

There’s a lot to enjoy about this book: Christmas decorations at an old department store. A white Christmas! Dapper stranger who’s possibly ruining it all but isn’t, actually! A crush come from the past to reignite old passions. Friends to lovers!!! (One of my faves, it has to be said.) A big band of friends, who all are as warm-hearted and diverse as I’d hoped. The Smith family!!

This was so much fun to read! A Christmas romance set in a department store with a colourful cast of characters and an upbeat vibe.
Shell Smith works at the make up counter at a renowned department store, she loves her job, her quirky friends and her big loud family. As more and more opportunities knock on her door, she realises her worth and learns to open her heart for the right person.
I thought this was sweet, funny and gave me all the Christmas season feelings.

A heartwarming, engrossing and highly enjoyable Christmas story that made me smile and root for the characters.
I liked the plot, the festive atmosphere and the fleshed out characters.
It's the first book I read by this author and won't surely be the last.
Recommended.

Che bello inaugurare le letture natalizie con un libro frizzante e pieno di vita come questo. Lizzie Byron è una ventata d’aria fresca con tutto il suo anticonformismo.
Ve la ricordate Bridget Jones e le sue disavventure, soprattutto amorose? Bene, Shell è il suo alter ego, veramente disastrosa ma un vulcano di energia che emana positività, quindi, buon divertimento!
Shell Smith lavora nel centro commerciale elitario Duke & Sons a Ostley in Inghilterra. Ama truccare e truccarsi, gestisce insieme all’amico, collega e Drag Queen nel tempo libero Ricky, un beauty shop di nome Art, che a onor del vero un bel po’ kitsch. Piuttosto sovrappeso, si è lasciata alle spalle il periodo del liceo, in cui si nascondeva e si vergognava dei suoi chili di troppo. Ora balda e fiera indossa tute gialle, abiti aderenti e colori sgargianti, ha iniziato ad apprezzarsi dopo il suo amore adolescenziale finito male. Gli basta stare alla larga da Nick Wallace ma lui è tornato in città.
Se ciò non bastasse Callum, l’erede del vecchio signor Duke suo datore di lavoro, sta prendendo le redini dell’attività di famiglia, questo cambiamento naturalmente crea preoccupazione tra i dipendenti, aggiungiamo per Shell uno scombussolamento ormonale dovuto al fascino da elegante principe azzurro porta con sé.
Il libro è divertente, spensierato, e io mi sono ritrovata a divorare le pagine perché Shell è catalizzante con i suoi amici mai banali e la sua goffaggine. C’è lo spazio per un piccolo e vero miracolo di Natale perché il centro commerciale è in piedi da tantissimi anni ma non naviga in buone acque, proprio nel prologo si percepisce l’atmosfera e l’importanza del Natale nella storia della famiglia Duke.
Un accenno devo farlo alla famiglia di Shell, lei vive ancora con i suoi che sono giovani e sanno come spronarla quando le cose non vanno proprio per il verso giusto. Sorelle e fratelli gemelli sono la ciliegina sulla torta e fanno in modo che esca fuori il lato dolce e affettuoso della protagonista.
C’è un triangolo amoroso, formato da un single incallito e narcisista, e Callum un uomo confortante e sempre gentile nei confronti di Shell.
Ci vuole tempo per sbrogliare le emozioni e venire a capo della situazione, e sul percorso ci saranno tante brutte figure da parte del vulcano Shell e il Natale che si riconferma il periodo magico per eccellenza.

Ho adorato volare in Inghilterra e passare i miei pomeriggi dicembrini nel magazzino Duke & sons, soprattutto al reparto cosmesi! Insieme a Shell Smith, i suoi vestiti sgargianti, il suo talento per il make-up e un gruppo di amici sempre pronti a sostenersi l’un l’altro.
Al Duke & sons sembra essere un Natale come un altro, finché l’anziano proprietario non dà l’annuncio: andrà in pensione! E a prendere le redini del grande magazzino sarà suo nipote Callum, bello, anzi, bellissimo, che conquista tutti i dipendenti con il suo charme e la sua eleganza, ma cosa succede se l’erede Duke ha intenzione di sconvolgere le regole del negozio? A invertire le postazioni, cambiare addobbi natalizi, e affittare il negozio per dei video promozionali sospetti, girati in segreto, senza che nessuno lo sappia, soprattutto suo nonno?
Duke & sons si ritrova sotto una tormenta di nev-novità che all’inizio i dipendenti non prendono molto bene, tra chi è vecchia scuola e di età e un tablet non sa neanche cos’è e chi non vorrebbe rinunciare alla domenica di riposo.
Però… Callum ha ragione.
Shell ama Duke & sons, non è solo il suo lavoro, ha iniziato uno stage a 16 anni e da allora è rimasta al grande magazzino, facendo amicizia con i colleghi e creandosi una seconda famiglia (oltre alla stravagante famiglia Smith, composta da ben 2 coppie di gemelli che vi conquisterà!!) e crede che stravolgere la routine potrebbe essere la svolta che serviva da anni, per far tornare in auge un pilastro di Ostley, la clientela e quei giovani che preferiscono le catene di marche famose e gli acquisti online.
Shell, Callum, Ricky, Denise si impegneranno a rendere di nuovo speciale Duke & sons, tra la magia del Natale, vecchi amori che ritornano, nuovi amori che sono lì, proprio davanti agli occhi, ma che sono i più i difficili da vedere, da accettare, amici divertenti e fedeli, serate al pub, giornate tra rossetti e smalti, gemelli urlanti, un passato ancora presente, un fardello che sia Shell che Callum si portano dietro e fa soffrire una parte dei loro cuori, ma anche tanta, tantissima speranza, un capitolo finale degno delle commedie romantiche alla tv (con tanto di corsa “dall’aeroporto”) e un epilogo dolcissimo e avvolto nel calore famigliare.

Shell, la nostra protagonista lavora in un grande magazzino, la Duke & Sons, è una make up artist e adora il suo lavoro. E' una ragazza solare che, dopo diversi anni, ha finalmente accettato i suoi chili in più e adesso si ama per quella che è. Addirittura veste aderente e molto colorata.
Vive ancora a casa dei genitori e ha una famiglia numerosa, non ha avuto una gran fortuna in amore dopo l'ultima esperienza alle scuole, ma le cose cambiano quando Nick ricompare nella sua vita invitandola ad uscire.
Ma il centro commerciale sta attraversando una profonda crisi e per risollevarlo il nipote del proprietario, Callum Duke prende le redini per renderlo migliore e applica una nuova strategia di marketing. Inoltre ha visto in Shell grandi potenzialità, lei è bravissima nel suo lavoro e il reparto di make up è destinato a diventare il più produttivo.
Una storia frizzante e allegra che ci catapulta nell'atmosfera natalizia, in mezzo alle meravigliose decorazioni che riempiono il cuore di gioia. I personaggi sono tutti simpatici, regalano momenti di spensieratezza e a tratti fanno anche ridere.
Un libro perfetto per immergersi nell'atmosfera natalizia e poi regala anche una grande lezione di vita. Bisogna amarsi, accettarsi per quello che si è, ognuno è speciale a modo suo. Questa è una parte che ho apprezzato tanto, non è importante l'aspetto estetico, ma quello che si ha dentro.
"Se avete mai avuto il dubbio di occupare troppo spazio, com’è capitato a me, spero che leggiate questo romanzo e vi rendiate conto che meritate ogni centimetro."
