William Byrd

Rate this book
Edmund H. Fellowes (1870 – 1951) is a giant in the scholarship of 16th and 17th Century music. Although research in the area inevitably moves on, Fellowes’ famous biography of William Byrd remains a classic work which is as rigorous in its scholarship as it is accessible to readers from all backgrounds. William Byrd is one of the greatest composers to have ever lived, and the Agnus Dei from his four-part mass arguably the summit of all music. Although a committed Roman Catholic (no easy feat at the time), as a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal he also wrote sublime Anglican music.
Produced from scans of the original OUP book, with cover and internal illustrations by Oxford-based artist David Jones (saatchiart.com), this book is republished in memory of my mother, Marga Emlyn-Jones, who loved William Byrd. My hope is that it will bring this classical work of scholarship to a new generation of readers at an affordable price.
