Shivering by her broken-down car at midnight, she’s relieved when a passer-by finally stops and offers her a ride. But her heart pounds as she hears the locks click shut. They’re going the wrong way. Rooted to the spot with fear, she looks into his dark eyes, as he laughs wildly…
When a car belonging to Black Rock Falls’ much-loved bartender Maisy Jones is found abandoned on an ice-covered road outside of town, Sheriff Jenna Alton and her deputy David Kane are called in. The exhaust has been tampered with, which can only mean one thing: someone wanted Maisy stranded on that isolated road…
Finding a red backpack on the same perilous stretch of highway, Jenna hopes it will contain clues to Maisy’s whereabouts. But the debit cards inside belong to local teaching assistant, Billy Stevens. He didn’t show up for work that day. Billy too has vanished into thin air.
Jenna needs to find Maisy and Billy fast, but her frantic search only throws up another missing person. Canvassing the small town festooned with Christmas lights, Jenna has the impossible task of tracking down a twisted murderer plucking victims from their everyday lives and leaving no trace.
Almost giving up hope, she makes a sickening discovery in the church at the center of town, one that sends shockwaves through the tight-knit community. Everyone is afraid to let their loved ones out of sight. But how many more innocent lives must be lost before Jenna can catch the killer among them?
D.K. Hood never stops with the intense storytelling found throughout this series. Another seasonal piece has the reader taken into the core of Black Rock Falls, where killers seem to have come out of the woodwork since Sheriff Jenna Alton arrived in town. When a local bartender goes missing, Sheriff Alton and her second-in-command, Deputy David Kane, arrive to investigate. It would appear that someone has been targeting those whose vehicles stop working. When more missing persons cross the police blotter, Alton and Kane know that there is something going on and the holiday season is the worst time to break bad news. A killer, an odd ritual, and a game of Christmas cat and mouse all play a part in this chilling novel. Hood knows how to keep the reader attentive until the very end.
With a car that is not working and the outside temperatures dropping, relief comes across her when a passer-by stops to offer some assistance. When they are on their way, thankfulness turns to panic as the locks click and she notices the others in the vehicle with her. This is not what she expected and things are about to get much worse.
Maisy Jones is one of the most beloved members of the Black Rock Falls business community, as well as being one mean pint puller. Working the bars, Maisy has made many people happy with her stories and positive attitude. When her ice-covered vehicle is found one day, suspicions are soon raised. No one has seen or heard from her, which causes a great deal of panic. Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane arrive on scene, only to find someone has tampered with the mechanical system. This was sabotage and one can only wonder if Maisy has been kidnapped.
As Alton and Kane scour the area, they locate a backpack, hoping that it will hold clues to Maisy’s whereabouts. It is not hers, but rather a teaching assistant’s who did not show up to work. Now, with two missing persons, Alton and Kane begin to fear that someone has been targeting locals for reasons unknown. Amping up the search, no clues emerge and everyone’s is left wondering what’s happened.
Panic follows as the hunt intensifies for the two missing persons. It’s soon apparent that there are others who have fallen off the grid, as Christmas approaches. A clue leads Alton and Kane to the town’s holiday display, but the answers are too implausible to fathom. Could this killer be more sadistic than many who have come to Black Rock Falls?
With a killer surely targeting locals and possibly walking the same streets, Sheriff Alton must use all her resources to locate this killer before they strike again. Merry is not how one would describe the sentiment around town, but determined is certainly one way of putting it. Hood offers up another stellar piece that pulls out all the stops for a successful final scene.
D.K. Hood has a large following, largely due to her stunning crime thrillers. While I am late to the party, I have used a significant binge to catch up to the great novels that encompass this series. Hood provides strong narrative basis to develop her stories, all of which build and add momentum throughout the experience. I could not put this book down, which is much like many of the others in the series, as I needed to know what would happen next.
Character development builds in this series, both for the protagonists and supporting cast. Having binged the first eighteen novels in the collection, I am more apt to see quick growth and some of the nuances that Hood has implanted over the years. Still, the development is to be applauded and has helped me better understand those who find their way onto the page. One off characters are also a great addition to the mix, flavouring things for all to enjoy. Story arcs are created and solved with the handful of key characters, all of whom have something to say for themselves.
The series relies on strong plot development in and around Black Rock Falls. I have never had issue with how Hood handles this, as she knows just the right twists to add in order to keep things on the level. Pulling on a number of ideas, the stories come to life and force the reader to hang on every word, as there is little time for wondering. I am eager to see what is to come, as we are almost at a point that I am caught up with the storytelling and yet there has been no lagging. Repetition seems a curse word for Hood, who is always fresh with her ideas and presentation. What is to come? I will have to keep reading to discover it all.
Kudos, Madam Hood, for a holiday thriller that did not disappoint.
Another intense, action packed trip to Black Rock Falls. Now in book 18, this series never fails to entertain and have me glued to pages. I love Jenna, Dave, Duke and all the team hunting down the worst criminal who always seem to find their way to this small town.
The team are on the trail of missing persons, this time. People just seem to be disappearing without a trace. Are they all connected and who is taking them. Where are the bodies? It will take the whole team to crack this one. It is thrilling and explosive and I loved it. Throw into that massive amounts of snow and Christmas around the corner. What more could you want?
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. Published on March 7th.
Another fantastic five star read from one of my favourite authors. Another book that kept me reading late into the night. It starts with a series of missing people in several states and Kate and Alton have a missing woman are they connected?? Little do they realise that they are hunting the most prolific serial killer who has been in Black Rock Falls. An easy five stars and a MUST READ for all readers of this genre. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Now You See Me is the 18th book in the Detectives Kane and Alton series by D.K. Hood. The book will keep you reading to find out who could be behind all of the people that have gone missing, including a family of 3 that left their dinner table and vanished without a trace! There's no sign of forced entry, no sign of a struggle, just a husband, wife, and young son missing from their home. Very, very weird! What happened to this family? Why were they taken? In the frigid temps, they left without their coats!
Maisy Jones is a new resident in Black Falls. She moved here hoping to get a job at the local ski resort, but was too late to get a job this season. Maisy settled for taking a temporary job as a bartender at the local bar. As she was leaving after her shift, she thought someone was following her as she walked to her truck. She made it to her truck okay and figured it must've been someone going to their car. Maisy's truck didn't start right up, it sputtered a bit, but finally started. As she drove out of the parking lot towards the motel she had rented a room in, her truck started having issues and the engine gave out. Maisy pulled to the side of the road and tried to start it again. No luck. Maisy got out of the truck and started walking towards her motel because she didn't have any other options. It was so late that she didn't think she'd see much traffic.
As Maisy walked she heard a truck coming. It sounded like a big pick up truck and she was surprised when the truck stopped beside her. The man looked "normal" enough and he offered Maisy a ride to her motel. He said he'd been hunting and as long as she didn't mind the smell, he'd get her where she needed to go. It was absolutely freezing, but Maisy turned him down at first. As the man told her the motel was at least 5 miles away, she reconsidered and got in the truck. Once in the truck she heard the locks click and the truck turned away from where her motel's located. The smell in the truck was awful land when she turned around the backseat was covered in plastic and there were 3 people sitting behind the plastic and they were all dead!! It was the missing family!!! Maisy screamed and knew she was in big trouble. The man covered her face with a cloth and Maisy passed out.
Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane were called when a truck was found on the side of the road and no one knows what happened to the driver. They find out the truck belonged to Maisy Jones and that she was working at the local bar as a bartender. David finds out that the truck had been tampered with and someone wanted her to break down. The investigation draws blanks. No one knows what happened to her, but she was at work the night before. They find out she had rented a room at the motel, but she paid in cash and all of her stuff is still in her room. What happened to Maisy? Where could she be?
A red backpack is found along the same stretch of road a bit later and Jenna was hoping it would be Maisy's. The backpack belonged to Billy Stevens, a young teaching assistant at the school. He didn't have a car and walked to and from school from the house he rented with 4 other men. The other men are doctors and work long and weird hours. None of them knew that Billy was missing because when they're home they're usually sleeping. No one at school knew what happened to Billy either. They just knew he didn't show up for work and he was always so reliable. He definitely would've called if he was sick. So now Billy has vanished without a trace, too. Who is taking these people and why?
I read this book very quickly and really enjoyed it. A serial murderer is in town and he has a diabolical reason for wanting different aged people to kill. It's almost Christmas in Black Falls and everyone is decorated and festive. It's the worst possible time for people to be missing. Jenna and David have lots of missing people to find and each day that passes more go missing. Will Jenna and David find the killer before he murders all of the victims? Where is he keeping the missing? How can what he's doing go unnoticed? If you love a good mystery this is the book for you! I look forward to the next book in the series and love the characters that D.K. Hood has created. I rated Now You See Me 5 stars and it is a must read!
I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of the book in exchange for a fair review! #NowYouSeeMe
Of the 17 previous books in this series, I've read only two - the most recent two years ago. Here, lead characters Sheriff Jenna Alton and her hunky deputy David Kane are married, living and working in small-town Black Rock Falls. As this one opens, local bartender Maisy Jones goes missing and is feared to be yet another victim of a long-time and prolific serial killer. Jenna and David find her abandoned truck and a backpack, but there's no sign of Maisy and the backpack contents belong to a young teaching assistant who - wait for it - has gone missing as well. Uh, oh, this could spell double trouble (at least).
Other characters from other books quickly get involved - such as FBI agents Carter and Jo Wells and Medical Examiner Shane Wolf, along with lovable but skilled canines Duke and Zorro. And the team will need all the help it can get: There are virtually no clues and no actual bodies; then, the unthinkable happens and a couple of other prominent people go missing.
The action - and there's plenty of it - focuses on the investigation (which, at one point becomes a life-and-death situation for Jenna and her husband) as well as snippets from the perspective of one of the victims. Who is the kidnapper/killer? Where is he (or she) stashing the victims, and are they dead or alive? Those questions, and others, are answered as this edge-of-your-seat story unfolds. All in all, another satisfying addition to the series, and I thank the publisher, via NetGalley, for allowing me to read and review a pre-release copy.
Another brilliant book in the Kane and Alton series. A young woman has gone missing following her shift at a local bar and it looks like she got into someone’s truck. Carter and Jo are investigating a family that has disappeared and soon a local teacher is missing as well. Jenna, Dave, Carter and Jo soon realise it could be the same person behind these abductions, but where is he keeping them? A local artist then goes missing and the group know they need to act fast before more people are taken. We see things from one of the victims perspective too and realise her captor has a collection of bodies and Maisy does all she can to ensure that she is not next. This is a gripping crime thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
It is winter in Black Rock Falls, and the odd snowflake floats down, but you just know, as with everything else here, the weather will soon become extreme. Sheriff Jenna Alton and her deputy David Kane are called to an abandoned vehicle, left on the side of an ice covered stretch of road leading out of town. There is no sign of any occupants; they have vanished, leaving only questions behind.
As the town gets ready for Christmas, and decorations begin to go up, more residents vanish, with no clues left to aid the Sheriff’s department in any way. When Jenna and Kane find out their friends and local FBI agents, Jo Wells and Ty Carter are also looking into a missing person's case it seems, once again, there is a serial offender in their town bringing danger at what should be a happy time of year.
This is the eighteenth Kane and Alton mystery, and I've read and enjoyed every one of them. The story is seen from both sides, which adds to the tension without giving away who is responsible, and there are shocks and surprises throughout. As usual, the regular forays into Jenna and Kane's private life run alongside the main investigation and once again take this series to the next level. Although I did work out one part of the storyline and think I spotted a couple of potential pointers towards a murder filled future everything else fell into place gradually and there were things I didn't see coming at all.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, but the opinions expressed are my own. I loved this. It was original but familiar and is easy to recommend.
You know that when you pick up a book by DK Hood you are in for a treat! The opening to this book, chilling. The killer, chilling! I just had no idea who, what or why. But I do love the mystery of that and that's why I love this series. You never know which serial killer you are going to get next!!!
As ever I love being back with the gang, and this time we saw more Kalo - I was so happy, he is such a great addition, and I am so glad he was there with the team - you kind of forget how much of a pup he really is!!! This is a family, and I love seeing it expand throughout the series.
However, this killer was next level of sadistic, and the rein of terror was one to scare you under your covers! I don't want to leave the house again!
Like the last few books, I got the audiobook as I do love Patricia Rodriguez and her narration for everyone. I can't think of anyone else to do it and she makes the time fly.
The only thing I wasn't on board with this time was the end for the killer and the "comeuppance". It was left field, I am wondering if all is what it seems. I don't know if there will be a future sting in the tail or not. Whilst I got the reasoning, I just felt something didn't sit 100% with me. It's hard to say anything without stepping into spoiler territory.
Despite my feelings on this, I know that I am going to be there no matter what when the next book comes out. I adore this series, I love the writing and I love the characters. Looking forward to it!
Big thanks to both Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of Now You See Me!
Expected publication March 7, 2023
Everyone is afraid to let their loved ones out of sight. But how many more innocent lives must be lost before Jenna and Dave can catch the killer among them?
Welcome back to Black Rock Falls. You know the one. It's that place where serial killers like to hang out. What a nail-biting thriller Now You See Me! This time out, the weather is icy cold and people are disappearing without a trace. It's almost Christmas and Jenna and Dave are desperately doing their best to discover what on earth has happened to these people!
I really enjoy this series. I love all of the characters on the team, especially the new kid, Kalo. I also love the dogs! I normally dislike books that have romance in them but it just works in this series.
Detectives Kane and Alton are back with a bang! And perhaps their most puzzling case to date. As they search for missing Maisy Jones bartender at the Triple Z. Who vanished without a trace on her way home from work.
And Jenna and Dave are not the only ones looking into a strange case. As FBI agents and friends Jo and Ty are looking for a family of three that disappeared under similar circumstances.
But what could a young bartender who's just arrived in the area and a family in a neighbouring county possibly have in common?
That's what they need to figure out and quickly. As more people continue to disappear without a trace throughout the county.
And as Kane and Alton race to find probably D.K. Hood's most twisted killer yet, I was hooked! And with plenty of twists. This was a cracking addition to what is a fantastic series, and I can't wait for book nineteen!
I would happily recommend this story and series to crime fiction fans everywhere!
I was kindly provided with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Welcome back to Black Rock Falls aka Serial Killer Central! This is book #18 and the series is still going strong as ever. Black Rock Falls is a major magnet for psychos, serial killers, kidnappers and crazy people, but it's also home to Sheriff Jenna Alton, her husband Deputy Dave Kane, Medical Examiner Shane Wolfe, deputies Zac Rio and Jake Rowley, along with FBI Agents Carter and Jo Wells. A bonus is Duke and Zorro, the adorable fur pups.
As the town is preparing for Christmas with decorations and a brand new nativity scene down at the park, people start disappearing. It doesn't take long for Sheriff Jenna Alton and her husband, Deputy David Kane to start their investigations. D.K. Hood really delivers on the gore this go around that will make you race through the pages. Never a dull moment in Black Rock Falls and this is definitely not to be missed!
Special thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an advance copy!
This is the first book of the Detectives Kane and Alton series that I've read. It's already book 18 and it's called Now You See Me by D.K. Hood. It was published yesterday and I received it from Bookouture via Netgalley.
The search for a missing bartender is widened when another person vanishes into thin air. In another town a complete family has gone missing. Are the case connected and will they be able to stop people from going missing?
To be honest, I just couldn't get into the book. Perhaps it's because it's only the first one I've read in a series of 18 books, but it just didn't grab me. There were too many main characters which made it quite confusing and hard to focus. The dialogue at times was a bit weird and made no sense - like when a horrific scene was found a character smiles widely - it doesn't make sense. The writing itself came across as a bit hastily done and should have gone through a check first for fluency. The story was also quite predictable and it took away anything suspenseful whatsoever.
I would not recommend this book as a standalone. Perhaps it works when you've read the other books, but that doesn't take away the fact that the writing was rather subpar.
I used to love this series but I’ve been slowly falling out of love with it and I think this will probably be the last one I read. I’m definitely in the minority with this review but I really struggled to get through this one. I wouldn’t recommend reading this as a standalone because there are way too many characters to keep track of if you haven't read the rest of the series. Even I struggled to remember who was who sometimes.
My main gripe with this book was the dialogue came across as awkward. Everyone seemed to talk to the other charcters as if they were stupid. They all work in similar roles and don’t need the basics explaining as if they are naughty children. It was just weird. Jenna and Dave are also an odd couple. I feel like they were more coupley before they got together than they are now. As for the murder, the hunt was intriguing and I didn’t guess the killer but the ending wasn’t very satisfying. It felt rushed and kind of incomplete. It's not a bad read, just not for me. But if you love the series then you should probably still check it out because as I said, I seem to be one of the very few who didn’t enjoy it as much as the other books.
I received a copy of the ebook via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this gruesome read....
when an abandoned car is found by the side of the road by kane and jenna its all hands on deck to find the driver, and it soon becomes apparent that something has happened to maisy jones the driver...as its soon discovered her car was tampered with.
someone had wanted maisy alone and vulnerable....
as if that was bad enough the weather was hampering their investigation with snow and ice making everything just that little bit more difficult
and when another person goes missing alarm bells start going off but with no bodies their only hope was a break in the case or waiting till spring to find them....
oh my goodness me this book i feel will stay with me for a while...it gave me goosebumps at some of the things that happened ...will never look at another nativity scene ever again without thinking about this book
cant wait for the next book in this brilliant series
I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Now You See Me, the eighteenth novel to feature Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane of the Black Rock Falls, Montana Sheriff’s Office.
Maisie Jones’s car is found on the edge of the highway and she is nowhere to be seen. Jenna and Dave quickly realise that her car has been tampered with and she gets that sinking feeling, especially when assistant teacher, Billy Stephens’s backpack is found by the edge of another road. Consulting with FBI Agents Jo Wells and Ty Carter who are in nearby Blackwater hunting for a missing family they think the disappearances might be linked.
I enjoyed Now You See Me, which is another visit to Serial Killer Central as Black Rock Falls has become known with all the requisite twists and turns and explosive action that the series is known for. It is told from various points of view, mainly some of the victims, Kane and Alton, giving the reader a leg up on events over the investigators, but not so much as a hint of the killer’s identity.
This is a different type of read to many of the other novels. There are no bodies so the team are fumbling in the dark for much of the novel, unsure of what has happened to the missing, but with suspicions and no idea of the perpetrator’s identity or killing site. The identity is revealed quite early in the novel, about 70% in, but that is only half the story with some quite shocking twists to follow.
The novel has a bit of everything, friendship, tension, uncertainty and some explosive action. It held my attention throughout and I was impressed by some of the twists the author threw in.
Now You See Me is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for my copy of this book.
I have honestly been waiting on this instalment since I finished the last. I love this series of books, the characters are amazing and of course the storylines.
In this book sheriff Jenna Alton and deputy Dave Kane are investigating the disappearance of a young woman. This quickly ties into a young man. And then they discover it is linked to disappearances all around the area-a case that Jo and Carter are investigating.
This was so good. It had all the right elements of a good suspense thriller. I love how there was many suspects, but also the story wasn’t finished once they got the bad guy.
To all of our returning readers, welcome back to Black Rock Falls; and to you newcomers, fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a murderous ride. Welcome to Murder Central, or - as the locals have come to call it, the Serial Killer Capital (of the world?). Ah, Christmas time in Black Rock Falls. And what would Christmas be without mystery and dama? There’s something happening here, and what it is.... is people, seemingly random people, are disappearing into thin air. Just, poof, and they’re gone. And it’s not like they are special people: a bartender from a local bar, a student, an artist and - possibly - an entire family. It’s up to Sheriff Jenna Alton and her husband/Deputy Dave Kane, their team and associates to try and stop another spree in this, the 18th instalment of the series. As usual, there are intertwining stories contained within the main one: a suspected drug overdose, a spectacular, multi-vehicle crash on the highway and a flirtatious television reporter (who comes and goes so quickly that I get the feeling he just might figure into future shenanigans). Everyone is on hand as the two teams combine to investigate the disappearances - disappearances that overlap their areas - and this perp is devious, having left little in the way of clues (or so it seems). But Jenna and Dave, Ty and Jo, Bobby Kalo and Deputy Rowley (with back up as usual from Shane Wolfe, his daughter and newly-relocated forensic pathologist Norrell) are hot on the trail. And things start to become clearer with every passing day. The action is non-stop, culminating in an attempted kidnapping and a high-speed car chase with unimaginable consequences. And you won’t believe the final outcome. Building on the characters that have populated the previous books in this series, and adding to each character’s back story, DK Hood continues to bring the goods.
As soon as I received this ARC it jumped straight to the top of the tbr pile and I’ve devoured it over two evenings. Another brilliant read in this excellent series. It’s number eighteen and still as fresh as the first. A riveting read that I genuinely couldn’t put down. It might be nearly Christmas but it’s definitely not goodwill to all men, or women, in Black Rock Falls. The method of the demise of the victims is as original as it is horrific. You don’t expect things to get worse but what then happens to them will blow your mind. A wonderfully gripping main plot, and the characters and subplot bubble along nicely too. A few new faces, and some more information on some other characters too. The only negative is that it’s was so good I read it too quickly and now I want to dive into the next one.
When a book by one of your favorite writers lands on your Kindle, you have two options. You can jump on it straight away or you can wait a bit longer knowing you still have something to look forward to.
So I showed I could resist the book calling my name and finally the time had come. :)
As soon as I open this book, the roof may fall on my head, I don't think I would notice. I am not reading about Black Rock Falls. I am in Black Rock Falls. I don't read about Jenna and her team. No, I am working with them trying to find the culprit and trying to save the victims.
The townspeople must be very happy I am not part of the team, because I would have arrested the wrong person. I had another suspect in mind, but on the other hand I can proudly say I had figured out where the victims were hidden. Jenna said she had a budget for more deputies so maybe I should apply LOL.
The killer had quite a history, but they should have known better if they wanted to keep on killing. Once you start targeting people from Jenna's town, your hours are counted...
The author adds another thrilling book to this amazing series. 5 stars
Sheriff Jenna Kane and her husband, Deputy Dave Kane are investigating the disappearance of a barmaid whose car is found broken down and abandoned on the road outside of town. Later, a teaching assistant also disappears, and a whole family is gone from their home. What started out as a missing persons case becomes a hunt for a serial killer when a Christmas display is not what it looks like.
DK Hood has written a gory, creepy but gripping novel. I could barely put it down!Totally chilling, and I am not talking about the weather. Just shows how the monsters walk among us, their evil hidden by a smile. As I have said before, I like a strong female lead in a police procedural, and Jenna is definitely that. I like the people in her team as well. A 5 star read in my opinion.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is book #18 in the Kane and Alton series. Whilst it is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone book, but I would recommend reading in series order for better understanding of the storyline. We are back in Black Rock Falls and it’s on the lead up to Christmas. The town seems quiet until the report of missing Maisie Jones, a bartender who is new to the area. As more people are reported missing without a trace, Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane call on the help of the FBI field team. Black Rock Falls is definitely serial killer central, and this case is particularly weird, creepy and gruesome!
I really do like this series and whilst we are on book #18, the action keeps on coming. This latest case really did send shivers down my spine, and as the book moved on the horrors of what this latest serial killer was doing was shocking! Sheriff Jenna and Deputy Dave are the constants through this entire series, and I still love them both, particularly as they are now a happily married couple! They certainly had their work cut out with this case, and despite having plenty of suspects to consider, you just couldn’t work out who was the evil killer behind it all!
The story begins straight into the action and holds the pace, suspense and tension all the way through. There’s so much going on and I was hooked into the storyline! I couldn’t believe how the killer was caught and I read open mouthed, unable to keep up with the fast pace but not wanting to tear my eyes away from the page! As I’ve come to expect from this author, this was another captivating read with plenty of heart stopping moments and just enough gruesome to turn my stomach ever so slightly! With a great cast of characters, a seriously creepy killer and a town where you really don’t want to live, I’d definitely recommend not just this book but the whole series!
First let me say I have loved all of Kane and Alton books until now. It was such a disappointment. I felt it was a mix of just boring dialog sprinkled with a disturbing and bizzare pycho thrown in. The story made little sense. Didn't build up to an exciting climax. Just left me thinking D K , what happened to you great creative writing?
Every year I select one or two authors and read a number of their standalone literary novels or an entire series from a mystery / suspense / thriller author. In 2023 I read most of DK Hood’s suspense thrillers and in 2024 I read a few more of the latest Kane and Alton novels. I’m commenting on them as a group but if something is notable in an individual novel I will comment specifically on that. All of Hood’s novels are well-written for their genre. The main characters (Kane and Alton) as well as characters who appear in most of the books, are developed well and the readers continue to learn more about them, their strengths and flaws, as we read through the series. With each new novel some additional characters appear. Some of these may turn up in future novels, but most only appear in that one book in the series. All of the titles are page-turners so it is easy to read them quickly. The physical area that Kane and Alton handle, as law enforcement detectives, is reasonably large, includes a lot of sparsely populated land as well as a reasonably isolated mountainous area which contains hiking trails, caves and rough campsites. For me this required some suspension of disbelief as there are always new characters who appear in each novel, some in plain sight, others who try to stay under the radar. For such a sparsely populated area, there are a lot of murders and other nefarious activities. If there wasn’t, of course, there would be nothing for Hood to write about. The one thing that irks me about the novels in this series are the number of times that Sherrif Jenna Alton has been the target of the new, non law-abiding characters in these novels. Should you read the novels in this series? Yes, if you like to follow the same characters, in page-turner novels that have creative, sometimes unbelievable, plots. Do you have to read them in series order? Not necessarily. The novels, for the most part stand alone but as the main characters develop throughout the series, and some new secondary characters are added, it would help to follow the titles chronologically. However, if the plot summaries of some titles appeal to you more than others then start with that novel. The plots and characters are far less complicated than something like Game of Thrones, so the novels would be much easier to read out of order.
Creepy does not even begin to describe the disturbed individual in this book. Black Rock Falls has been dubbed Serial Killer Central, and it appears that another maniac is on the loose in this beautiful town. When a car belonging to a local bartender, Maisy Jones, is found abandoned on the side of the road, the puzzle begins. After further investigation, they realize that her vehicle was tampered with, and this caused the vehicle to stall. It is as if she simply vanished into thin air. The super A-team of Kane and Alton are on the job. When it is revealed that an entire family of three have also vanished, the mystery deepens. They can find no trace of these people. No bodies are found. You, as the reader, know the killer has them, but you do not know what he is doing with them. I was beginning to get a little creeped out trying to figure this weirdo out.
So, while Christmas lights are being strung up around town with holiday cheer all around, the joy of the season is being stolen for Kane and Alton by this depraved individual. There is a horrific accident scene in the book that will also shock you.
I love this series and the characters in it. They are the cream of the crop in law enforcement circles. D.K. Hood pulled a fast one on me. Shocking and disturbing are two worlds that come to mind when I think of the direction this book went. She shocked me to my core. I did not see it coming and was completely blindsided. As usual D. K. Hood has written another winner worthy of much more than five stars. I hope this series continues on and on. It is amazing that at book #18 in the series, D. K. Hood's imagination finds another plot line to entice the reader into the story. Her imagination is amazing.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
An abandoned car, The driver can't have gone far? A tampered exhaust They fear the worst....
Another enthralling visit to Black Rock Falls Where another serial killer again calls. This time folk just disappear Where they've gone just isn't clear.
Sheriff Jenna Alton and her deputy David Kane are wed But still work together to find justice for the dead Now they search for the missing, too, Though where they've gone they haven't a clue!
How can a family just disappear? Leaving their meal, why isn't clear! Property of the vanished is found nearby If it was abandoned are there any clues to why?
Christmas is coming, but for those living near This isn't proving a time of very good cheer. With festive lights brightening up the scene Who could be so cruel and mean?
What an explosive read this proved to be With a frightening, sickening mystery. For all involved, there's peril and danger. Is the perpetrator someone they know or a stranger?
Another fascinating case for this intrepid pair, Working with the FBI and the team they share. The K-9s also have roles to play To help resolve the case on the final day.
I thoroughly enjoyed this gripping crime thriller With its horrendous serial killer. The story is full of surprise galore Read it for yourself to discover what was in store!
For my complementary copy, I say thank you, As I share with you this, my honest review.
This is the 18th book in the series and I just love this series having read from the very beginning. I enjoy the characters and I think that they fit well together.
Alton while not my favourite in the series and actually rated lower than I had ever thought always pushes her way through even when least expected.
Kane is my favourite character and for the main reason that he is powerful and has a heart of gold. He doesn't push things too far even though he could easily. What makes him so unique is that his background and his love really raises him from good to great.
Wolfe is my next favourite which I didn't expect but I always want more from this character as he must have loved such an interesting life and could easily have a series of his own.
The story imwas very good however not quite as compelling as some of the others in the series. Overall this book was very good and it has a lot of great points.
Seeing Jenna and Dave in action is always a high point as the love you can see they share and the partnership on the job is a great double team act.
I think adding in Wolfe is also great since he is such an interesting character. He brings a lot to the team and you see how he has the back of Jenna and Dave and always will.
The other officers are good characters as well and we will see more as time goes on in these books as to how popular they become or if they will show more promise than what they already have.
Gosh I love this series of books, they just never get old. I think maybe my only complaint is that they are too short and it's too long between instalments haha. Now You See Me is book 18 in a cracking police procedural featuring Sheriff Janna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane, it's set in one of the most unfortunate areas called Black Rock Falls Montana. I mean it's serial killer central and you'd be a fool to move there, especially if you're a young woman..
There's a glut of missing persons in Black Rock Falls so we have the dastardly duo and their trusty sidekicks not to mention FBI Agent Jo And Carter are on the case. They pretty soon work out that they have a fruit loop in the area. I absolutely love their dedication to the cause, that everything takes a back seat to the investigations, although I have to say they do look after their animals especially Duke, who is one of my favourite members of the team.
One of the worst things about it is the time of year this takes place, we all think of Christmas as the happiest time of year but for this to happen mars the occasion for everyone. I found it interesting to see the story from the perspective of one of the victims, about her desire not to be the next of his bodies. It makes me wonder would I keep it together enough to make it out alive?
If you enjoy this then I think you might enjoy other authors like Patricia Gibney, Angela Marsons and Carol Wyer who all pen really good police procedurals
