Noam spins a narrative history out of years of historical and intellectual scholarship. I liked the initial chapters on hominoid evolution, didn't love the interlude on the development modern cultural practices, but finished with an enjoyment of the final chapters on human happiness and future prospects.
The book attempts to address the question 'why are things the way they are now' by trancing the human rise back to dawn. I enjoyed Noam's answer.
There are parts of this book that I really liked and other parts that I struggled to get through. Overall, it was easy for me to put down. Gave it a more favorable rating because it is very unique. It is 10 years old so I would be curious to have him analyze the last 10 years.
