Το διαμάντι του Μαχαραγιά είναι ο πολυτιμότερος θησαυρός όλου του κόσμου.
Ανήκε σε κάποιον μαχαραγιά της Ινδίας ο οποίος σε ένδειξη ευχαρίστησης και ευγνωμοσύνης για κάποια προσωπική του εκδούλευση το δείχνει στον άνθρωπο που θεωρεί έμπιστο για τη μυστική χάρη την οποία διεκπεραίωσε με επιτυχία και διακριτικότητα.
Ο ευνοούμενος του μαχαραγιά είναι ένας Άγγλος στρατιώτης. Επιστρέφοντας στην Αγγλία ο άνθρωπος αυτός αποκτά πλούτη, δόξα και κοινωνική καταξίωση.
Αλίμονο.
Το ανεκτίμητο πετράδι φαίνεται να είναι καταραμένο και να φέρνει δυστυχία και κακοτυχία σε όποιον έρχεται σε επαφή μαζί του.
Αλλάζει χέρια αρκετά εύκολα και καταστρέφει τις ζωές όσων αλλοιώνονται συνειδησιακά από την ομορφιά και την αξία του.
Το διαβόητο διαμάντι του μαχαραγιά γίνεται λάφυρο κλοπής και ο αναγνώστης παρακολουθεί το ταξίδι του από Ινδία σε Λονδίνο κατόπιν στο Εδιμβούργο και μετά στο Παρίσι αφήνοντας πίσω του συμφορές και εκμαυλισμένες προσωπικότητες που πρόδωσαν ιερά και όσια μπροστά στην εκτυφλωτική γοητεία του και την αμύθητη αξία του.
Καλή ανάγνωση.

I did not read the Kindle Edition of this book, but that's the only edition I could find in English on Goodreads.
This was a fun serial adventure told in third person-limited from a variety of people. A foolish young dandy of a man, after quite a series of episodes of fun and danger comes across, without intending to, an infamous jewel called the Rajah's Diamond.
He is chased around town by nefarious characters without realizing what they are after. But he loses the diamond after all, in an innocuous place where it is found by someone else. This person has been passed the ball and now his journey begins, although this person is not quite so innocent as the dandy.
But he's just as foolish and soon, he has been divested of the diamond as well. The diamond passes through a number of hands. Many turns and twists and as many chase scenes as a Buster Keaton silent film occur before the matter is resolved.
I've only given the bare bones of the story. If you want to read the sort of adventures our different diamond bearers have, you'll have to read the book.

Stevenson erfüllt in dieser Krimi-Satire sämtliche Erwartungen, die aus den ersten Seiten von Collins Moonstone erwuchsen, um dann in Dickens-Nachfolge kläglich zu verebben. Ein Diamant bringt nicht nur in tatkräftigen Männern die schlechtesten Seiten zum Vorschein, sondern auch allerlei vollkommen überforderte Teilzeit-Besitzer in unverhältnismäßig große Nöte. Die Portraits der armen Würmer sind so treffend, dass man nicht wirklich Mitleid mit ihnen bekommt, sondern herzhaft über ihre Missgeschicke lachen muss, - auch im Wissen, dass die gerade siegreiche Gier nur einen kurzen Moment des Triumphs hat, weil schon der nächste, listigere Schuft um die Ecke kommt, um seinerseits wieder ausgetrickst zu werden. Stevensons Selbstmordklub ist zwar etwas prominenter, enttäuscht aber im letzten Drittel. Dieses mal krönt das Finale schlüssig das Geschehen der Trilogie, wenn man unbedingt mäkeln will, dann ist die mittlere Erzählung vielleicht nicht ganz so brillant wie die beiden anderen Teile, führt aber allerlei Lösungsansätze ein, die im Finale einen Ausweg aus der Sackgasse der Gier ermöglichen.

Καιρό είχα να διαβάσω βιβλίο του Ρόμπερτ Λούις Στίβενσον και το "Το διαμάντι του Μαχαραγιά" -που κυκλοφόρησε στα ελληνικά από τις εκδόσεις Μάγμα μέσα στον Ιούλιο- μου φάνηκε σαν μια καλή ευκαιρία για να τον ξαναπιάσω. Και πάλι πέρασα πολύ ωραία την ώρα μου, έστω και αν στην τελική δεν ξετρελάθηκα κιόλας (όπως και να το κάνουμε, το "Το νησί των θησαυρών" παραμένει αξεπέραστο). Το βιβλίο αποτελείται από τέσσερις ιστορίες οι οποίες ουσιαστικά αποτελούν μέρη μιας ενιαίας ιστορίας, που έχει να κάνει με την ξέφρενη πορεία ενός διαμαντιού, που σε μικρό χρονικό διάστημα αλλάζει κατόχους με αλλόκοτους έως και αστείους τρόπους. Πρόκειται για ένα ωραίο και ψυχαγωγικό βιβλιαράκι, γεμάτο αστείες καταστάσεις και χαρακτηριστικές σκηνές, με την ατμόσφαιρα να θυμίζει και λίγο παραμύθι. Εννοείται πως αποτελεί προϊόν της εποχής του, δείχνει τα χρόνια του στη γραφή και το υπόβαθρο των χαρακτήρων, αλλά προσωπικά αυτό το βρίσκω θετικό, μιας και κάπως έτσι βλέπεις πώς ήταν εκείνα τα χρόνια και πώς σκέφτονταν γενικά οι άνθρωποι σε εκείνη τη μεριά του πλανήτη. Γενικά, ένα ευκολοδιάβαστο και ευχάριστο ανάγνωσμα, ό,τι πρέπει για να ξεφύγει κανείς από την πεζή πραγματικότητα και να περάσει γρήγορα και ξεκούραστα η ώρα. (7.5/10)

A British General receives a large diamond for services performed for a Rajah during a foreign war. The diamond tempts everyone who comes into contact with it, ruining their lives. The general, his wife, her secretary, a clergyman, a landlord, a bank clerk, and finally a prince all own the diamond for a short time. Their destinies are intertwined; their lives forever changed.
I liked how this story is told from the many different perspectives of the various people who come across the diamond. Their POVs are separated into different chapters, telling their individual adventures. The plot is really crazy with wild coincidences and strange accidents. The writing style is hilarious, bringing a comedic element into the adventure even when the scene is actually serious. It's really funny and entertaining!

El relato está compuesto por cuatro capítulos, en cada uno el protagonista es diferente y a la vez todos con mayor o menor participación aparecen en los demás; por lo tanto los diferentes episodios se van entrelazando para generar el hilo narrativo.
La trama consiste en el robo de una joya famosa y emblemática (el diamante del Rajá), esta piedra preciosa tiene como particularidad transformar a su dueño en una persona ambiciosa.
Steveson fiel a su estilo creó un contexto donde los personajes representan lo mezquino, la avaricia, ambiciones y decadencia que puede llegar a tener el ser humano. El autor con ironía, picardía y costumbrismo presenta una obra de enredos y moralejas.

Παραμυθένιο, σε παρασύρει και σε κρατάει. Με μια πολύ ωραία μετάφραση του Χάρη Τανταρούδα-Παπασπύρου, η πολύ καλοστημένη έκδοση από το Μάγμα, με ένα εξώφυλλο που σου χτυπά στο μάτι και σου αλλάζει την διάθεση, έχει όλη τη δυναμική να σου κρατήσει ωραία παρέα στις διακοπές ή και μετά απ' αυτές. Δεν είχα ξαναδιαβάσει Στήβενσον και ομολογώ ότι με εξεπληξε όμορφα και ευχάριστα, αφήνει τη φαντασία να δουλέψει και εν τέλει λες "Μάγμα, θέλουμε κι άλλο"!!!

More adventures of Prince Florizel, this time concerning a diamond which evokes devilish avarice in all who behold it...dunno if I like The end of Florizel's story. The depiction of his fallibility at the end is inglorious and inconsistent with his godlike aura through all seven stories :(

En "El club de los suicidas" Stevenson seguía las peripecias del príncipe Florizel de una forma más o menos directa. En este volumen su papel es mucho menor, y sin embargo es clave en la resolución de la historia.
Se trata de 3 relatos cortos, y un 4º en forma de epílogo, que siguen las andanzas del Diamante que da título al libro. Un objeto que convierte a todo aquél que lo ve en un codicioso sin remedio, el diamante pasa por muchas manos diferentes a lo largo de los relatos, convirtiendo a gente respetable, en criminales y ladrones.
Cada capítulo tiene un protagonista diferente, sin embargo todos tienen personajes en común, y las historias están magníficamente entrelazadas. Si en "El club de los suicidas" me quedaba con el primer relato muy por encima del resto, en esta ocasión la calidad es mucho más uniforme, la sensacion que da es "libro dividido en 4 partes" más que la de relatos sueltos.

Y así concluyen las historias dedicadas el singular príncipe Florizel de Bohemia.

Il diamante del Rajà è un ciclo di racconti che, assieme a Il club dei suicidi, fa parte del primo volume di New Arabian Nights, raccolta di storie inizialmente apparse a puntate sul London Magazine nel 1878. La natura episodica dei singoli racconti (non autoconclusivi) crea un’interessante struttura narrativa “a puntate”: non c’è un protagonista univoco, ma un oggetto del desiderio che fa da fil rouge tra i vari racconti; il misterioso diamante, pericoloso catalizzatore dell’umana cupidigia, scivola dalle mani di chiunque ne entri in possesso, mettendo a nudo l’indole segreta dei suoi proprietari.

Coming after reading A LOT of Dumas, I have giving this book a three star read as it was an enjoyable change. Otherwise it would probably have got a 2 Star rating.
This was a very quick and easy read, a wonderful writing style by Stevenson. Set in part in India, it was very reminiscent of Kipling. Set around a Diamond given to a General and a woman who married him more for wealth rather than love. It looks at the situation of an incident where s9me diamonds are lost, the aspect of honesty and how money corrupts people.

Interesting Stevenson early set of stories, second and last in the series of Prince Florizel (the other one is The suicide club), about the power of jewels to corrupt people. As usual, Prince Florizel grants himself the right to take justice into his own hands.

Een kort, leuk verhaal over een kostbare diamant en de verschillende mensen die voor de verdwijning ervan verantwoordelijk waren.
Het begint met de brute generaal Thomas Vandeleur, die de diamant steelt van een rajah en hem meebrengt naar Engeland. Zijn overspelige vrouw, die van de generaal wil vluchten, steelt al de juwelen en de diamant en geeft haar dienstbode de opdracht om de gestolen goederen in een hoedendoos naar een door haar opgegeven adres te brengen. Er loopt echter iets mis en de dienstbode raakt in moeilijkheden. Hij moet vluchten van zijn achtervolgers en belandt in de tuin van een ongure tuinman die ontdekt wat er in de hoedendoos ligt. Hij ontfutselt de grootste helft van de juwelen en gooit de jongen op straat.
De dientsbode keert terug naar het huis van Vandeleur en vertelt wat er gebeurt is. De politie wordt erbij gehaald, maar gelukkig wordt er de jongeman niets kwalijk genomen omdat hij meewerkt met het onderzoek.
De diamant van de rajah wordt gevonden door een geestelijke die meteen zijn kans ziet om rijk te worden. Hij onderneemt een reis naar Edinburgh om bij een juwelier in de leer te gaan zodat die hem zou leren diamanten te snijden. Maar in de trein leert hij de broer van Thomas Vandeleur kennen, John, die ook een dief is en erop is om de gestolen juwelen en de diamant terug te vinden. De geestelijke en John Vandeleur spannen samen om de diamant te verdelen.

J'ai acquis ce livre sur les conseils de Linda Lê qui en a écrit un article dans « Les Inrockuptibles » N° 345 (du 03 au 09 juillet 2002). C'est dire que je l'ai lu il y a longtemps, mais je garde un souvenir très fort de ce conte, écrit en 1878 et publié seulement en 1882.
« Le Diamant du rajah » est extrait de « Les nouvelles Mille et une nuits », avec lequel il entretient un rapport étroit puisque Florizel se retrouvera dans les dernières nouvelles en marchand de tabac. Et comme le fait remarquer Linda Lê, Stevenson n'en reste pas, puisqu'il emprunte ce nom de Florizel à William Shakespeare (« Le Conte d'hiver ») et annonce les retrouvailles sanglantes avec son jumeau dans « Le Maître de Ballantrae », sous-titré « un conte d'hiver ».
Voici comment elle résume à perfection le propos de ce conte :
« Mais si le diamant détourne ces personnages de leur chemin, en les entraînant dans une course folle vers une mort symbolique, la métaphore dans le texte tisse une trame qui se défait au fur et à mesure que les héros (malgré eux) de cette aventure entrent en bisbille avec eux-mêmes. Jusqu'à ce qu'ils comprennent que la métaphore est une transposition de leur existence. Alors ils se débarrassent du diamant pour une pierre plus précieuse et recommencent une nouvelle vie. »
Le salut, bien que provisoire finit par triompher. N'est-ce pas là une vision utopique ?

J'ai bien aimé ces quatre récits qui, finalement, forment une même histoire. C'est romanesque et plein de rebondissements. On sent les influences de l'époque (Dumas, Dickens).
Le but pour moi était de lire en anglais.
J'ai été un peu déstabilisé par la syntaxe des dialogues. Par exemple :
"I do not wish to flatter you," replied Vandeleur "but upon my word, ..."
"I, sir," continued the curate, "am a recluse, a student, ..."
Ces coupures m'ont parfois gêné.
Je trouvé que la traduction était parfois bien éloignée du texte d'origine. Mais je conviens qu'au vu du texte, ce n'est pas évident.

Los relatos del príncipe de Bohemia son una verdadera joya oculta dentro de la obra de Robert L. Stevenson, cada una de las historias comparten un aura de misterio y aventura completamente atrapantes, la calidad del mundo que nos presenta nos invita a sumergirnos en las profundidades de una Europa tan peculiar como sus habitantes, que destaca en cada uno de sus clubes de caballeros y barrios bajos repletos de crónicas imperdibles, que pueden, si uno así lo desea, ser el puntapié inicial de una nueva anécdota.

Nice quartet/cycle of stories. The Rajah’s Diamond, though it was published much earlier, brought to my mind Tolkien’s “Preciousss” in the deleterious effect it had on those who came to possess it. This is a long short story about several life events revolving about the Rajah's diamond and diamonds in general. I certainly understand the fascination for beautiful young ladies and sort of understand their fascination with diamonds... still this work was more about the male characters of the story and how the diamonds move between stories through time... for me, it was boring.

Another short story collection which benefits from featuring less of Prince Florizel as it is able to examine the story from the perspective of plenty of other interesting characters. It doesn't have quite the same punch as it's predecessor 'The Suicide Club', but then I think it's hard to find quite as unique a premise as that volume. 3 stars.

A mediocre story collection saved by the impeccable writing style and the masterful depiction of a thrill a random spur-of-the-moment criminal feels. The final story is an attempt at "ever after" sort of finale which falls flat due to how things turn out for the main character.

Interesting stories weaved together. Especially the twist in the 2nd last chapter and the entire sequence of the last chapter was written in a really intriguing manner.

This is a wonderful little story about heroism and greed. This is the book, which moral is actually worth learning for some people in our current society.

Este es un cuento lleno de aventura. Sinceramente la forma en la que Stevenson narra las historias me ha gustado mucho. Ilustra mucho las escenas donde hay tención y su escritura es muy fluida.
