“Alaska was more than a destination; it was a state of mind.”

The cover caught my attention and the author’s reputation made me add this one to my Alaskan vacation reads. I’m always assured of a great read with any of Dana Mentik’s stories.

This story is centered around forgiveness. Jackie Swann finds herself in trouble and flees to Alaska unaware that her old boyfriend, Roman Carter, has settled here. Mentik crafts two wonderful characters; one who needs to forgive and one who needs to feel worthy of forgiveness. There’s a couple of compelling subplots and Mentik ties them all together with a warning about making split-second decisions. I loved how she ties together light and forgiveness. In describing Jackie, she writes that “forgiveness was the light that would shine and push away the sooty anger that clung to her heart” and in describing Danny, Jackie’s brother, she writes that he “was a mirror that reflected love back to people, even people who had wronged him.”

The aurora borealis on the cover appears in Mentik’s book. Although scientists tells us that this phenomenon is caused by solar flares hitting gas molecules, I appreciate Mentik sharing the Alaskan legend of the lights. She explains that the lights are said to be “flaming torches carried by departed souls, guiding travellers up to Heaven.” I like that imagery!

I’ve travelled to Greenland, Iceland and Alaska in search of the Aurora Borealis. Imagine my surprise to see them on my own deck TWO nights last summer.

Good book. The descriptions of Alaska were very well written. I had a pretty good idea who was behind the theft of the medical info,but the book had a lot of twists and turns before revealing who it was.

I love books that are hard to figure out and has some twists, and this was one of those books. There are actually two different stories going on here:

Jackie's friend, Asia, discovers some questionable Insurance billing at the doctor office they work at. Asia and her boyfriend, along with jackie, stay late one night gathering information. But when the doctor walks in and burns with anger, Jackie takes the flash drive (forced on her by her best friend), and runs. She runs to the only place she doesn't think anybody knows about - Alaska. She hopes that she'll be safe, but a series of events teaches her that there is no where she can hide.

Roman Carter lives in Alaska. he works for a small charter company and is trying to forget all about Jackie and the tragedy he caused two years ago, The owners of the lodge Jackie stays at when in Alaska are acting strange as well. Something is amiss in the place that used to bring hr comfort.

The suspense was great. Though I was easily able to figure out some of the details, there were many more to be discovered. The outcome is quite tragic, for some, but now perhaps the healing can begin.

Very good story! The romance was a bit hard to get into, but the suspense was great.
