A former actor, theatre-director and drama teacher, Deary says he began writing when he was 29. Most famously, he is one of the authors of the Horrible Histories series of books popular among children for their disgusting details, gory information and humorous pictures and among adults for getting children interested in history. Books in the series have been widely translated into other languages and imitated.
A cartoon series has been made of the series of books and was shown on CiTV for a period in 2002.
The first series of a live-action comedy sketch show of the same name was shown on CBBC in 2009 and a second series is due.
Terry is also known widely throughout children and adult reading groups alike for his True Stories series (see below for series list).
He received an Honorary Doctorate of Education from the University of Sunderland in 2000. His numerous accolades also include the Blue Peter "Best Nonfiction Author of the Century" Award in the U.K.
The greek demigod Prometheus stole fire from the gods, and gave it to those insulant, selfish little creatures they call humans. As a punishment from Zeus, the avenger, a mighty bird with god given powers is sent to chain prometheus to the cascaus mountains, and rip out his liver every day (it grows back, so the punishment is endless). After a while of this punishment, Theus escapes (with the help of Hercules), and runs through time and space avoiding the Avenger, and trying to complete his task to find a true human hero, so that Zeus will call off the Avenger and forgive Theus. While running through time, Theus arrives at a place called Eden City, in 1795, where he meets a friend, a 12 year old girl named Helen (or Nell), who might just have some "hero" in her.
I picked this book up because i enjoy books about greek mythology. I finished this book because I wanted to find out if the Avenger would ever catch Prometheus. I would recommend this book to Cheyenne, because she also likes books about greek mythology.
Not as good as the first one. I still love Author's humor and small jokes that are easy to miss and they go over your head. Story line wasn't my favorite part of the whole book, But that ending had me craving for more.
I enjoyed book one and was eager to continue the story. Deary's writing style is pleasant and witty. This one appeared to have less of the footnotes that got to be a bit much in book one, and the story itself and its characters had me curious to continue Theus's tale. I liked the way the two storylines within the book weaved together. I am already looking to finishing the series and seeing how everything comes to a conclusion.
I'll be honest, I was a little disappointed by this book. It's a cute little story for kids, but I'm not entirely sure there's enough in here to keep even their attention fully focused. The author is usually so good at finding the sweet spot mid-way between education and entertainment, but in this case it feels like he's missed the mark on both counts.
It just comes across as a watered down rewrite of the first book, except while the story follows on its being told by a completely new character, who basically has the same traits and backstory as the original. It feels like the similarities were used as a quick shorthand to get the story moving without having to develop the new characters very much, and their actions become very repetitive very quickly, so there's not actually that much to enjoy of them. The fact that the premise of Prometheus' story has already been set up means that layer of the story is also removed, and so while he is the lynchpin of the plot, he doesn't have all that much to do in this one, which is a shame because he is by far the mist interesting character!
There are two new elements introduced here. The first is a potted retelling of the Trojan War, which is mainly used as a set up to continual jokes about how, in the ten years of the war, Helen's beauty has gone from being able to launch a thousand ships to ever decreasing numbers. We do meet Achilles and Paris as squabbling rivals, and it portrays Zeus and Hera as bored Gods who are just playing with the human population for their own amusement. It does do a little to introduce the myth to the book's target audience, but again not in the same depth or tone that you'd usually expect from the author. And while I am no expert, I do love a good Greek myth retelling and some of the elements used in here are completely new to me... so I do wonder if the author has chosen to stray fully from the source material and just make up his own events to suit?
The second element are the 'Wild Ones' who have surrounded Eden City. Although it doesn't state it explicitly, the names of the characters and other inferences suggest to me that they are based on Native Americans. Unfortunately, while the role they are meant to play in the story should be quite important, that whole aspect feels very glossed over and they fade into the background really quickly. Again, I feel like this was a missed opportunity - there is so much more that could have been done to develop the plot and the characters here.
There are clear signposts towards a 'big reveal' in book three, which I do have handy as the library has just delivered it for me and I do want to finish the series. But ultimately this book seems to be purely a bridge from the set up to the finale, with very little point in and of itself. Perhaps it would have been better as a duology? I don't know. I keep coming back to the fact that I'm not the 'right' age for this book, but then again this is also true for his 'Tudor Terrors' or 'Horrible Histories' series, and I still love those! Perhaps I'm now learning why I hadn't heard of this series until recently... Ah well!
Considering this is the first book I began to read in the series, and it is the book that actually got me to buy the trilogy...I found that I didn't enjoy this as much as I thought I would when I began reading it in an isle at work.
Flight of the Fire Thief starts off great, full of sarcasm and quick witted comments that keep you power reading through the pages. However what I felt made this book flop was that I had expected it to be a follow on with the same people from the first. When I discovered that in actual fact Theus had met up with new people it actually made me fairly disappointed.
The thing is, with changing perspectives, you'd expect a character change too, so their personalities aren't the exact same, with a different up bringing. The author kept the same character personality and changed only the name and how they were living.
I enjoyed parts of this book and it will most likely appeal to many young readers developing a sense of humour, but I found that aside from Theus being hunted -continuing from the previous book- the story was just regurgitated from the previous one in the series, which is a shame because I really was looking forward to these.
The sarcasm and wit in this one is so much like The Fire Thief, that I actually got bored of it and the little annotations at the bottom began to get ignored because it just goes on and on. you know kinda like when you're reading something and then a little bit to much information is being given, and suddenly you just zone out and wonder why you are actually bothering to read it because its not actually holding.......
Yeah... like that.
I probably wont read the next one, but I will keep the books as they are nice to look at. haha
Review of the fire thief by terry deary Short but fantastic story the fire thief written by terry deary is about Greece’s god Zeus and his brother promoteos who’s half god, half human it’s telling the story of a half god who still believe in humans and also love them as kind of intelligent, clever creature exactly when other gods didn’t care about this small, week and harmful creature. He stole Zeus fire and gives it to human he thought they still worth it. Zeus punished promoteos and chained him to mountain. He was half god so he has eternal life but Zeus believed that promoteos deserve and most suffer so he sent a peregrine with is god of revenge to take promoteos hart out of his body every single day, at the end Hercules help promoteos to ran away so he flight with his powerful but tired wings and take refuge to the human world. It’s clear that promoteos will survive at the end of story and Zeus will forgive him. This story is really fluent yet meaningful story with I think every teen age should read it. It’s clear that the writer believe in Greece legend and fiction as he wrote a lot of story like this. This one is truly beautiful and powerful but funny one. The Fire thief is a magnificent work of terry deary.
i have read the previous book enjoyed it to an extent i know this is for children but not sure what age as have to really concentrate i was glad had the notes at the end of who all the different people were and the footnotes at the end really helped bits of knowledge think it wld be useful for anyone want ing to know more about greek legends etc and prob will read the follow up
Kıyıda köşede kalmış olmasına rağmen hayli eğlenceli bir parodi. Ateş hırsızı Prometheus'un ikinci macerası, Truva Savaşı'nı arkaplanına alarak 18. Yüzyıl Avrupası'na uzanan bir kuşatma öyküsüne bağlanıyor. Ve gerçekten çok komik. Terry Pratchett'ın soyundan gelen bir yazım tarzı da buna büyük katkı sağlıyor elbette.
Just wanted to finish it (Took me 4 hours btw). Ugh. This book is all over the place. I can't believe I'm writing my first review on goodreads for this book. But I had to show my frustration. This was far weaker than the first issue. Though since the ending cliffhanger was nice, it makes you wanna read the 3rd issue asap.
