This is dated a bit in terms of some unhealthy thoughts and moments, and there are some tropes added in for flavor that I could live without (but end up being handled well in the end I remember), but there were also parts of this that were awesome so I still loved it.
Tropes become a bit too recycled (Sumire and Hatsumi are off-key/ Sumire is away from Momo + stressing about it/ Momo says he’ll never leave her etc), but that doesn’t mean it isn’t still addicting!
I also love how Yayoi Ogawa draws both characters and fashion. Unlike most manga, that usually recycle the same faces and body-types with ridiculous proportions, clothing, and hairstyles, Ogawa is more realistic and it really adds to the story. The style is separate from Ai Yazawa, but this kind of attention to detail gives me the same vibe as Nana.
I like the art style, it is a nice change from the more frilly shojo style. I was kinda stuck between 3 and 4 because Sumire is still stuck between Hasumi and Momo with little to no forward emotional momentum. The addition of the family meeting and some of her past helps a bit in explaining why she is stuck like this... It's what she wants and what she thinks she should want. Overall, I really hope the whole Hasumi mess either goes away or she just tells him Momo is her pet, or that he is a person she is helping, or anything closer to the truth...
I’m old school so I remember the original Kimi wa Petto from 2004 live action and I loved it which is why I wanted to read the manga. I’ve not been feeling the volumes that I have read and so I’m calling it here. I kept wondering when this one would be finishing and dreading looking at the percentage completed cause I thought I’d been done and it just would never finish. I’ve got to let this go before it ruins the memory for me. This is one of the few times I’ll say the adaptation is better than the source material.
This Vol was a little better than the other two so far. I liked how their relationship developed. But still I’m a little disappointed that they haven’t tried anything yet. But I’m still enjoying reading these and I’ll be reading the fourth vol soon. Till then I recommended reading these.
Their relationship is so comfortable... Surime's boyfriend is kind though, can't dislike him really, but her and Momo are different. p.s. Momo's dancing panels are gorgeous.

I first heard of this story when I stumbled upon a jdrama which was based on this manga a few years ago. I really find the idea of a person being someone else’s pet amusing. I know what you’re thinking, wahahaha. This one isn’t kinky at all, it was actually pretty wholesome.
Kimi wa pet is a story of Sumire who stumbled upon a box containing a young Takeshi. She fed him and found out that he had nowhere to go. Takeshi wants to stay, but he can only stay if he becomes her pet. Thinking that saying such preposterous things would discourage Takeshi, Sumire was surprised he agreed. Both of their lives after that encounter changed forever. Was it for good or bad?
This story started with introducing Sumire who I would say is a perfect example of a “strong independent woman”. That would have been a great thing right? Unfortunately because of it, her boyfriend of 5 years cheated on her and made her feel that it was all because of her that it had happened. She is also not that well liked in their office because she looks really stiff and strict. But her life took a turn after taking in Takeshi whom she’d named Momo, which was her dead pet’s name.
Kimi wa pet is quite a lengthy read for a josei so it includes a lot of scenes not only focusing about the relationship between the main characters but also about some of the side characters as well. And speaking of characters, this story has a lot of them so I find it hard to keep track of them sometimes. Just like most manga that I’ve read, Kimi wa pet has a lot of very funny scenes that left me laughing my heart out. Maannn! I still can’t stop myself from laughing just thinking about those scenes, lol.
Aside from the happy ones, Kimi wa pet had a lot of scenes that I really hated. Unfortunately this story contains one of the things I hate in romance, which is the third party. I just keep on hating the other girl that I also ended up hating the other love interest of Sumire as well. He was actually a pretty ideal guy and I love how he reacts to Sumire. You can really see how he adores her, plus they really look good together. He can be pretty funny too lol, just too bad he wasn’t able to keep that image for me until the end. Although I kind of pity him a little in the end.
As for the main character Sumire, I really liked my first impression of her. She’s a really tough chick and she doesn’t accept b*llsh*t. She can be really harsh at times but I guess that’s just how she is. Little by little, I’ve got to really see the real her and why she’s like that. She looks really tough but she can be fragile too. I really like her character, but I just hated how she can’t always voice out her real feelings and how she always delays informing her boyfriend about her pet, that in the end, I don’t think he ever found out. I also liked Momo’s influence on her, ever since they were living together as master and pet, Sumire was finally able to create connections with other people and express herself. I just find it really interesting getting to know her character in each chapter.
Momo on the other hand is very fun to read. I usually don’t like childish characters, but his childishness is not in an annoying way. He is also very outgoing so it’s hard to imagine those hardships he experienced in the past and in the present too. When he’s with Sumire, he’s very childish and playful which makes him look like a real pet dog, lol. He ran away from home. That’s why he doesn’t have a place of his own, so despite his age you could say that he knows a lot about life. I guess he also has this promiscuous side to him, but I think it was only seen around 2 times while I was reading this story. He’s years younger than Sumire but he taught her a lot of things. I also LOVE how he loves Sumire so much, I just can’t imagine how he’s been feeling all those times while Sumire is still in a relationship with her boyfriend, who is also her first love.
As for the romance, I guess it’s already pretty obvious who’s going to be the main couple right? There were a lot of annoying characters who really irritated me but I guess that just helps Sumire realize whom she really wants to be with. The hint is actually there in its early chapters, but I like how the mangaka transitioned her feelings until she finally realized that she’s in love. Their official relationship started in a long distance romance, but I love how the two of them made it work. I particularly like their virtual date, it was really cute. I also love the fact that the two of them didn’t sacrifice anything in their life just to make their relationship work, even though it could mean that they’ll be in a long distance relationship.
I also love the fact that this manga didn’t just end after the two of them were finally in a relationship but we’ve got to read more! It didn’t just focus on the relationship between the two but also the friendship between Sumire and her best friend. Actually, this manga didn’t just show me romance, but it also gave me life lessons and realizations that we could apply in our daily life. We’ve also got to read about friendships between the characters and work life (especially about relationships between coworkers). Isn’t that nice?
Kimi wa pet is highly recommended for every romance lover. I am certain that this will really entertain you, *wink.
Really enjoying this series. Can’t wait for book 4.
If you have seen the Japanese tv series based on this movie (Kimi Wa Petto, 2003, not either of the remakes), it does follow the manga pretty closely, although the tv series is more PG 13 rated, and the manga is probably an R. No explicit sex scenes, but plenty is implied, and Sumire has a more complicated sexual history in the book.
Momo’s age is given as 18 in the book (below the age of majority in Japan at the time it was written), but 20 in the series. Again, this was probably to satisfy tv censors and make the story more family-friendly.
Although the manga was written in the early 2000’s, it doesn’t feel dated. Women still face a glass ceiling in the working world, sexual harassment is still a thing, and it’s still really hard to balance a career and a social life.
Even more today, more and more single women are giving up on dating and just opting to stay home with a pet. And a relationship with a 9 year age gap, with the woman being the older of the two, no longer seems as radical as it did in 2001.
This volume has more relationship friction than the previous volume. It is one of my fave volumes of the series because we meet Sumire's sister, Shinobu the elder (and scariest) and Akane the younger (and most boho-ist).
It also starts the quadrangle of Sumire, Hasumi, Momo/Takeshi and Shiori. Shiori is bold for Hasumi. She's annoying too but her entrance into the story helps expose some of Sumire's character flaws in an interesting way that keeps one from disliking Shiori completely.
I also like this volume because it is the start of Takeshi starting to come into focus as different from "Momo". The 'pet' jokes are still there but the bite of the jokes is sharper which makes sense because Takeshi is Momo but not Momo either.
Yeah, this one is definitely a favorite in the 14-volume series.
This one was a little dramatic but I get it. It reminded us that momo used to have to use his body to stay safe and that she is the first time he has had safety really in exchange for comfort from someone that really appreciates the happiness he brings to her life. He seems to revert to kissing when things get hard for him and he doesn’t know how to communicate not that she is really much better. She is so beautiful and confident but so unsure of herself in so many ways. Thru are both such interesting characters. This is age gap but it’s like 18 and 27 ish so not the best but not the 15 I saw some people say.
This volume moves past Sumire and Momo at home, and throws challenges in their way - how will Sumire cope with having a rival for Hasumi's affections? Will this bring out her true feelings about him? Why does she miss Momo, and what are the extent of her feelings for him? How will Momo cope with Sumire becoming closer to Hasumi?
We also get a small glimpse into the familial pressures that Sumire is under, meeting several of her sisters, and learning more about Sumire's youth.
A really good volume, I'm enjoying this manga more and more!
I love love love this series! I wasn't sure what to expect as I began reading but I was soon very pleasantly surprised with the depth of the characters, sweetness of the story, and the originality of this manga. Yes, the premise of the story is unusual and seems a bit weird at first but it's actually very sweet and full of heart. Read this manga series! 5 stars
Do be aware that this series is Josei and is kind of open door. It contains some language and generalizations that are wrong. But. . . overall this is a very sweet, emotionally deep, and cute story that I really enjoyed.
There was a lot of drama this volume and equally a lot of emptiness. Momo and Sumire had their first big fight. So, some of the days are spent alone in her apartment. It was her and her boyfriend's first time, so we have those scenes. Momo's gone away from Sumire and of course, there is a beach chapter (I'm not complaining). We meet some of Sumire's sisters and get a pretty nice end to the volume. Excited to see what's next !
More of a 3.5 and rest assured this book still absolutely rules but I gotta say, stuff is starting to feel like it's going nowhere. Instead of advancing character dynamics or relationships we're just spinning wheels and rehashing what already happened. Basically starting to feel like some Inuyasha filler. Which is concerning since this is only volume 3. Regardless, the art is still great, it's still fun, and I love Ogawa so I'll keep reading.
