by Anonymous

New Testament and Psalms Revised Standard Version-Catholic Edition, Second Edition A completely new design and typeset edition of the popular Ignatius Revised Standard Version-Catholic Edition Bible, with minor revisions to some of the archaic language used in the first edition. This revised version is a contemporary English translation without dumbing-down the text. This second edition of the RSV doesn't put the biblical text through a filter to make it acceptable to current tastes and prejudices, and it retains the beauty of the RSV language that has made it such a joy to read and reflect on the Word of God. Now the only Catholic Bible in standard English is even more beautiful in word and design! Features: keywords: bibles,  second Catholic edition, new testament, psalms

This gets infinite stars. It's the Word of God, it's literally the greatest thing that's ever been put to paper. But in all seriousness, I absolutely love this edition because it's super portable, great text size, and I especially love that it has all the Psalms with it. If you want to make reading the New Testament and praying the Psalms a part of your daily life, I would absolutely recommend getting this.

I love this edition of the New Testament, mainly for one single reason -readability.

Most Bible printings make them an absolute pain in the a** to read. I have a number of different Bible translations, and I absolutely HATE that stupid dual-column layout that's the printing standard for the majority of editions out there. After years spent searching for a nice, easy-to-read, modern English translation of the Bible with a single column layout, I finally stumbled on this one in a used book store (along with it's twin companion volumes covering the Old Testament).

The way the text appears on the page makes such a difference. When a Bible's text is printed on the page like a regular book, it reads as a flowing whole. When it's printed in cramped dual-columns and crowded in by textual notes and reference numbers, one's reading of the text becomes fragmented. The only thing that would make this particular edition of the New Testament perfect would be if they had completely eliminated those obnoxious and distracting chapter and verse numbers from the text. As it is, this is about as good as copy as I could have hoped to find.

If you can find yourself a used copy, this is a great one to own.

Given I read the New Testament twice in the last few months, I am going to rate the translation. The RSV-2CE is the best modern translation of Scripture: it is clear, accurate, and retains the eloquence of many older translations of Scriptures. It is also not condescending in its language like many modern translations, and does not update its language to be “inclusive” like many modern translations. Considering this, the RSV-2CE is my daily use translation; it is also the translation I use for in depth study and for my MAT. Overall, I would recommend it as the main translation for any Catholic to use for devotional use as well as study.

A friend invited me to read psalms. It was like poetry.
