Autorul oferă o imagine utopică a Franţei.

The first utopian novel set in the future, Mercier´s L'An 2440, rêve s'il en fut jamais (literally, "The Year 2440: A Dream If Ever There Was One") was originally published in English as Memoirs of the 25th Century. The ambitious novel was published just a few years before the French Revolution and is a great guide to the mindset of the revolutionary fervor of 18th century France. It is told as a frame story: the narrator falls asleep and wakes up 700 years in the future, in a utopian Paris that is governed by reason and science.
In Mercier's future, there are no priests, monks, beggars or prostitutes. The standing army, slavery and foreign trade have been abolished. Taxes are abolished, and people donate money to the state of their free will. The justice system is reformed. Monarchy is upheld, as is the belief in the God, although the power and influence of both are greatly diminished. The book is devoid of the implicit or explicit racism of, for example, Camille Flammarion, and the future society is built on brotherhood between people. And brotherhood is the operational word here, as women have little place in Mercier's future, apart from "professions such as spinning" and taking care of domestic work for which their characters well suited. Education and reason are governing principles. While freedom of speech and freedom of the press are absolute, Mercier's society also burns "immoral" or "unnecessary" books. History is not taught, and old landmarks of the corrupt rule of kings and clergy have been wiped from existence.
There seems to have been very little scientific or technological advance in 700 years. In fact, daily life looks very much like 1770 in 2440. It is clear that Mercier doesn't try to predict the future, so much as he paints a picture of an alternative Paris of 1770 by way of satirizing present day France.

Jahrhunderts in Frankreich.
