My Present This Year

Rate this book
In the world of obscure fandoms, there lies an unlikely candidate: the 2009 Folgers commercial titled, innocuously, "Coming Home." Having been a fan of this commercial and its V.C. Andrews-ian subtext for many years, I decided to at last enter the halls of the vaunted "Coming Home" fandom this year and submit my own take on the story...

This story was originally written for the Twelve Naughty Days anthology in 2021.

Nick is coming home for Christmas, and he only wants two things:

1) a cup of coffee, hot enough to reglaze the inside of his cermaic mug.

2) not to see his far-too-gorgeous, far-too-forbidden stepsister.

But it's none other than his stepsister opening the door to welcome him home, and there's not enough hot coffee in the world to distract Nick from how much he's tempted to make Nora his own...

When Charles Dickens wrote the Christmas Carol, I’m convinced that when he said Ghost of Christmas Present he meant My Present This Year. I’m haunted.

The book was free but I paid a price because you see the itty bitty thing is THEY WANTED TO BE SIBLINGS TOO like they actively talked about not just wanting to fuck as people but as siblings so I think I’m justified in my horror. It didn’t even have good sex truly the only thing it excelled at was Incest.

It was like two cardboard cutouts of attractive people having sex. He was all like “I don’t like vanilla sex” but proceeds to have pretty vanilla sex just with his stepsister lmao. I don’t even think he spanked her? He talked about it but Chekhov’s sex act strikes again!

Like I love Clueless and A Midsummer’s Nightmare (Kody Keplinger) and unabashedly ship Derek and Casey from My Life With Derek (I watched/read all of these very young maybe I too am fucked up it’s fine we’re fine)…

So I think there’s a way to do this but saying yes I want to fuck the brother part of you as well as the step part ain’t it 😭 like truly they barely knew each other and had met like three times so they DIDN’T NEED TO WANT THE SIBLING RELATIONSHIP TOO I scream into the abyss.

I didn’t go into this wanting to hate it and the only way I can justify two stars over one is that the Folgers commercial also screamed incest, but really. The sex wasn’t wild enough and the incest was just a real womb tomb.

One star books are ones that make me angry. This didn’t make me angry. But I am deeply deeply in need of a lay in my bed, in the dark, where all I do is stare at the ceiling and shed a tear. The best part of waking up is NEVER this book is giving coma.

I also just don’t mesh with Sierra’s writing. I’ve read a few things now to be confident of this fact. This sentence is an example of the exact opposite of my preferred writing style:

Nick Mumford was havoc and flow, he was alluvial lust and surges of power, he was force, hidden behind a warm smile and a noble vocation.

Like I’m sorry but this was worse than the shades of incest.

And then THEN he gave her the nickname “little rain cloud” and that was worst of all. Suddenly my libido grew two sizes two small.

Look, this is exactly what you’d expect when you found out Sierra Simone wrote an erotic novella inspired by a Folgers commercial, okay? And I loved it. It was alarmingly short, but considering it was ✨literally✨ a step-sibling/taboo romance that focused more on the steam than the plot, I can’t be too mad.

I weirdly want more.

How does one quantify this reading experience.

Two coworkers and I discovered this romance novella based on the infamous Folgers commercial in the middle of a more-stressful-than-usual Saturday workday, and I have to say it really turned the entire day around. It was like we’d drunk from the Joker-poisoned water supply in Batman (1989). There was raucous shrieking. There was an educational viewing of the commercial for one colleague who had not seen it before, throughout which we were whisper-screaming the lines like it was Rocky Horror. When I downloaded the novella and started reading it out loud, the opening paragraph completely took us out at the knees. I will copy it here in full:

“My Present This Year was written for the Twelve Naughty Days anthology, an anthology raising funds for The Trevor Project, a suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTIA+ youth.

You can read more about The Trevor Project or make a donation by visiting TheTrevorProject.org.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline ‘1-800-273-TALK (8255)’ or text TALK to 741741 at the Crisis Text Line.”

You may be thinking, how can it possibly go up from here? How can you top this opener? Fortunately, this novella dares to ask the question why top that opener when you can top your stepbrother? Onward we go!

This two-chapter tale features alternating points of view from stepbrother and stepsister Nick and Nora (which made me yell NICK AND NORA’S INFINITE PLAYLIST??????? and Tierney, at presumably normal volume, ask Like from the Thin Man?), reuniting after Nick’s three-year tenure with the Peace Corps. Most of the novella is spent reassuring the reader that this really isn’t As Weird as it Seems - Nick and Nora were both in college when their parents got married, so they’ve never lived together before, Nick’s mom and Nora’s dad bought a new house after getting married, so no shenanigans are happening in anyone’s childhood home, and Nick and Nora really only spoke one or two times before he left for the Peace Corps. Nick gets home and makes a cup of coffee, a plot device to get the parents out of the state is executed, and then Nora drops some hints that Nick is Basically A New Person To Her and they’re Practically Two Strangers Meeting For The First Time. And then they fuck nasty on the couch. The end!

Some choice tidbits:
- Nick uses the word ‘whom’ instead of ‘who’ during his horny internal monologue, which is very posh of him especially when it comes right before a sentence like “But first, coffee and jizz.”
- “I’ve never let anyone know—not even people I’ve dated—that I want anything other than gentle vanilla sex.”
- “When she sits with her thighs spread, I can see the shadow of panty-covered pussy peeking out from around the crotch of her shorts.”

Another priceless element of this reading experience was added in because this novella was a free download for anyone who signed up for Sierra Simone’s newsletter via email. So every four pages or so, there’d be a receipt right at the end of a paragraph that said “Book made for meganlastname@myemail.com,” which was rather like watching a porno and having the actors turn to the camera every few seconds to say “This is for you, Megan [Lastname].” Perfection.

For my final review, I’ll break it down like this:
Rapturous joy brought to myself and my coworkers: Five stars, no notes
Execution in terms of writing quality: Two stars, quite a bit of room for improvement in my opinion
How well my expectations were met: Two stars, the VC Andrews namedrop in the promo summary really had me expecting some gothic weirdo nonsense and this was a lot more Life With Derek than Flowers in the Attic. But like, I get it lol
We’ll round that out at 3 stars. Merry Christmas!

I don't know what the Folger's commercial is but this was two step-siblings giving into the lust they have for each other when they find themselves alone at Christmas.

It's all good tough, they are doing nothing illegal here, they are both adults and no blood relation to each other. Love is love right?

The whole good guy fighting against the wrongness of wanting his stepsister, and then finally giving in?
This is the way to do Christmas, I think dreamily. Getting fucked into the floor by a secretly pervy golden boy.

Yeeesh, for a quick read, this was scorching.

(Also, I’d never seen the Folger coffee ad this story was based on, but I looked it up after and 😂😂😂 who approved that?!?)

“My Present This Year” by Sierra Simone

4⭐️/5⭐️
4🌶/5🌶

“...you’re my present this year.”

-I mean, what more can I say other than: this is an erotic short story based on the infamous Folgers coffee Christmas commercial from 2009. The commercial is iconic because of the weirdly flirtatious nature of the siblings, and has inspired countless fanfics, memes, and parodies. I suppose you could categorize this short story as a fanfic of the original commercial, but don’t let that label fool you: this is a fantastic holiday erotic short story.

-I’m kind of shocked by how much I enjoyed this story. To clear things up, this is not a brother/sister incest relationship. The FMC and MMC are step siblings, their parents got married to each other when the step siblings were already adults, and they never lived in the same house together. In fact, they only met a handful of times. But that first encounter sealed their fate, the attraction between Nick and Nora was like a ticking time bomb.

-The story basically follows the same plot of the commercial, the brother arrives from his time in the Peace Corps. He comes home thinking he will enjoy a cup of coffee (hah) and some intimate time alone. Nick is horrified to see his step sister, Nora, the object of his forbidden crush, is also staying home for the Christmas season. Their parents are spending the holiday elsewhere, leaving their adult children alone for the week. Whelp. You can guess where the story goes from there.

-This book is free to download (as of the posting of this review): https://dl.bookfunnel.com/qagzzconbl

3.5 stars. This was a short and delightfully, raunchy holiday novella from Sierra Simone! Inspired by the infamous 2009 Folgers commercial and its V.C. Andrews-ian subtext, this little forbidden-ish treat delivers!

Nick and Nora are step-siblings, his mom married her dad just 4 years ago, but he’s 7 years older so they never actually lived together. Now Nick is back home from a 3-year Peace Corps stint and thinks he’s about to have the house to himself for the holidays. The family is supposed to be off for a Caribbean cruise when Nora surprises him by opening the front door. Lots of coffee and giving in!

Sierra Simone is the only person in the world who could write such a sexy, smutty, Christmas love story based on that ridiculous and incestuous Folgers commercial (you know the one)

cw: step-sibling romance

Inspired by the “Folgercest” commercial, this one has no actual incest, they are only related by marriage. And it was really good! It was pretty short but it packed a punch. It was hot and despite the subject matter, it was low angst and just simply a good time. Definitely recommend it if step-sibling romances don’t bother you!

This is was a weird story. It’s not long enough to get a feel for the characters and the sex was very bland.
The relationship is strange from the get go because they barely know each other even though they’re step siblings but at the same time are each other’s soulmate? I found it hard to buy. Plus they wanted to have a sibling relationship and a romantic one. So is this an incest story? A forbidden relationship story?
This was just a strange one.

Way to get my Goodreads challenge back on track! Read a short sexy story by the goddess herself, Sierra Simone.

Nora and Nick are so sexy they made my kindle over heat. Damn hot.

I wish there could be a follow up Christmas story where he’s filling her up to get a baby.
