King David

Rate this book
'David comes alive in this novel as a fascinating, divided self, but you also feel on finishing it that you have understood a little more about the extraordinary world of the Middle East from which so much of our own Judaeo-Christian religion and civilisation spring. Modern parallels are never forced - Massie to too subtle a writer for that - but this world of sex, intrigue, war and religious mania suggests constantly to the reader not memories of the Bible but events in the newspapers in that very Hebron where David ruled as king' AN Wilson, Evening Standard

As usual in Massie, historical characters come to life in this book easily and beautifully. David is neither the pitiless warrior , nor the God-inspired poet or the sinful lover of Betsheba; he is all this and more. Massie gets David to be as believable as a biblical character can be, taking away the supernatural from his story and at the same time not leaving God out ofthe equation.
Disappointed and betrayed by all of his children (including a surprisingly portrayed Solomon)David looks back on his past. A sad and beautiful novel.

Did not finish.

An interpretation of the Bible story, like the OT but with more psychology and less God. A lot of sex and killing!

Excellent book bringing the Biblical story to life with beautiful writing and characterisation. The stories were only dimly remembered from Sunday School about 60 years ago so it was enjoyable to read an accurate and psychological study of such a great man,who I assume was real living person or at least he's a composite figure of remembered action.Well worth reading.Interesting to see Massie's name on the cover bigger than the book title - clearly a writer of note.
