While well written, this drags and drags. The story is bland, the characters have no bite, the obstacles and unfolding events are predictable. Also, we spend too much time with other characters and their POVs, which can't hold my interest.

It's nearly 500 pages, and I never managed to get into it, so I am giving up.

Ah I cannot give it a 4 since I did love Kane's romantic suspenses more but I have to say, this is definitely a different kind of historical romance. The romance in this one definitely takes a back seat of sorts. It isn't about the dance, the two acknowledge their feelings early on but it's more about figuring out what is going on so that they can finally get an HEA.

Also I love how while the two cousins contrast each other, they both have their strengths and aren't afraid to stand up when necessary.

Andrea Kane is a new author on my list. I've had a few of her books sitting amongst my collection for quite a few years, but this is the first that I've picked up. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. I don't know if I initially realized that there was more to this story than a romance novel, but it quickly became apparent that there was far more to this book than I'd believed.

We are first introduced to young Stacie (Anastasia) and Breanna as they make their first decision to trade places in an effort to save Breanna from getting into trouble with her father. Being that their fathers are twins and their mothers, sisters, the cousins' auburn hair and jade-green eyes are so similar that there is no one who can tell them apart -- not even their own parents. This sparks a pact between them which will much later become an integral part of their survival. That evening, they are pulled aside by their grandfather and given some very special, very secret gifts: For Stacie, a gold coin; silver for Breanna. He tells them that they must keep them safe and never under any circumstances present them to anyone. Though they are young, the girls take his words to heart. Little do they know what an impact those coins will make upon their lives.

Years pass and Stacie returns to England after having moved to Pennsylvania with her parents soon after that night when she and Breanna had first switched identities. Both of her parents have died and she returns to the beloved home shortly after her grandfather's own death. Her uncle, Breanna's father, is now Viscount Medford. It is clear that he has taken to running his family's company and lording power over his daughter. With their grandfather gone, Breanna's world had shrunk to the size of Medford Manor. Both girls are overjoyed at being reunited, but there is a sinister undercurrent at Medford Manor which unnerves Stacie and causes her concern for her beloved cousin.

Her fears grow when she witnesses just how sheltered and locked away Breanna has been all these years. Part of the reason appears to be that Medford has his eye on Damen Lockwood, Marquess of Sheldrake, as a future son-in-law. Not only is Damen incredibly brilliant and wealthy, his family is renowned for its credibility and standing in the financial world. No doubt this has played into Uncle George's desire to bring Damen into his family. His greed and lust for power was never a secret; in fact, it was one of the things which drove a wedge between the Colby men for many decades. Though between them lies an even darker secret which Stacie's father carried to his grave, Breanna knows not of, and George has allowed to fester in the dark hole in which his heart should have existed.

It is clear that the new Viscount Medford is furious at being kept away from Stacie and Breanna's inheritances, and that Stacie is now owner of her father's share of the family shipping company. He hadn't anticipated having a woman as a business associate, let alone one as outspoken and meddlesome as his niece. He can only hope that Damen, the man wisely named as custodian of Stacie's inheritance, will keep her from making any foolish financial decisions and squandering away the money before Medford can find a way to get his hands on it.

Little do Medford and Damen know that Stacie is far more than she first appears. Having inherited her sense of business and learned financial savviness from her father, Stacie is thrilled to finally be able to have a part in the family business. What she hadn't counted on, however, was having to answer to a man such as Damen when it came to spending those funds -- at least until her twenty-first birthday. At first, she finds Damen to be cold and far too observant. He thwarts her attempts to invest in what she believes to be a brilliant financial opportunity and she does everything she can in order to realize her dreams. Her determination is what eventually draws Damen to her.

Damen is far too busy to play custodian to this Americanized young woman, Lady Anastasia Colby. He has many more pressing matters to attend to, a bank to run, and investments to manage...still, he finds himself spending more and more time with her under the guise of discussing her inheritance. He doesn't expect her to brazenly approach other potential investors at her coming out party after he turns her down. He's drawn to her fiery personality, her rapier wit, and her enthralling beauty. It would seem that she is the only woman in the world who could entice him to mix business with pleasure.

As Damen and Stacie become closer, Medford starts to see the threads of his careful plot begin to unravel. No one realizes the depth of his debt and the strength of his determination to not lose everything. He will stop at nothing to win everything back. Even if it means sacrificing what little family he has left. Greed has blinded him and driven him to the edge of sanity. It becomes apparent that Medford is involved in something very dangerous, very dark, and very illegal. His desperation could very well put Stacie and Breanna's lives in jeopardy if he isn't stopped in time...

I found the undercurrent of romance between Damen and Stacie to be quite enjoyable. It wasn't as overt as a "true" romance novel, but there was just enough to put this solidly in the romance genre. I liked the progression of it, which flowed rather well with the complex plot. However, I will say that I felt like I needed more from Damen's point of view. A vast majority of this book was from Stacie's perspective (or Medford's, but I'll get into that later) and I wanted to know more about how Damen fell so hard and so fast for Stacie. He was such a logical, methodical character that there had to be something rather extraordinary going on in his mind to make this happen. We got very few chapters from Damen's point of view, and I would have very much liked to have seen at least several more. I'm much more used to a more equitable division of perspective. What was different from the more traditional romance genre was that the characters declared love rather quickly and rather easily. Once it hit them, they didn't resist or hide it; they accepted it and moved on with plans to make a future as best as they could. This felt a little bit off to me, but it could have been simply because I'm so used to characters having to work through more issues in their relationship. Of course, Damen and Stacie had many other obstacles they needed to overcome...

I mentioned that a portion of this book is told from Medford's perspective. I found this to be an excellent tactic. It was a great way to create tension and also expose the readers to his descent into desperation and madness. It was dark and disturbing at times, but it definitely created a great villain for the mystery/suspense portion of this story. Medford was a selfish, greedy, hateful man -- and we never would have known the depths of his depravity were we readers not privy to his inner thoughts.

I read this book rather quickly despite its length, which I find to be a good testament to its readability. I liked the strong characters and captivating plot. Stacie was intelligent and outspoken while Breanna was an excellent foil to her more brazen cousin. I did enjoy seeing Breanna come into her own as the story moved along and I looked forward to seeing more of her in her own book. I found Damen to be witty and charming, impressively intelligent and wise beyond his years. He was an excellent male lead; I just wanted a bit more insight into the workings of his very interesting mind.

I definitely recommend this book to those seeking to branch out a bit from straight "romance." This can add a bit of variety into your reading without too much culture shock. The sense of danger fairly dripped from every page and kept me wanting to read more...so much so that I've actually already finished the second book in this pair!

This was the first historical romance that I've read by Andrea Kane, and I found it to be enjoyable. I liked the cousins, Anastasia and Breanna, and found Damen Lockewood to be an intriguing character. Breanna's father, George, was despicable. The storyline was interesting, and I look forward to seeing where Kane takes the story in The Silver Coin.

Anastasia Colby and her parents immigrated to America when her grandfather died and her uncle, who hated his brother and sister-in-law, inherited his title. When Anastasia's parents pass away just before she turns twenty-one, she returns to the household of her bitter uncle and her beloved cousin, Breanna. As the daughters of twin brothers who married sisters, the girls appear to be identical twins instead of cousins. When the will of Anastasia's father is read, her Uncle George realizes his nefarious plans to gain her fortune have been thwarted, and he begins to plot ways to take her inheritance. Fortunately, Anastasia's finances are controlled by Damen Lockewood, a trusted family friend, as well as the head of House of Lockewood, the most trusted bank in England. As Damen and Anastasia spend time together, they quickly develop tender feelings toward one another. This does not fit in at all with Uncle George's plots, and they must discover his sordid dealings and stop his criminal plans before they will be out of danger and able to move on with their lives.

Anastasia, Breanna, and Damen were all great characters. I am looking forward to reading The Silver Coin to find out the identity of the unknown villian who escaped justice in The Gold Coin. I received this book as an ARC through Netgalley.

Wow. Brief context, I read The Silver Coin first because I didn't realised that it was a two part series and after reading this, the intensity is much lesser in this than the second book.

The plot surrounding the inheritance was quite typical and not very different as one can imagine. It did take me a while to read through because it was rather draggy and the different POV in chapters were great to give us an overall view of the story.

But when it reached the climax, that was a huge "what? That's all??" kinda vibe.

Totally do believe that this really was like a setting stage for the next book because I remembered it being quite intense.

I do resonate with Breanna more than Anastasia maybe because there was a strong emphatic link being formed. But I could be biased since I've already read and liked the second book in this series.

Overall, it is a good read but I think I'd skip this and go straight to the second. Reading the first helps but not necessary.

Not As Riveting As One Would Think!

There are many good plot points in this story, but only one (minor) twist was somewhat surprising. This book felt like a romance by numbers, book! You could see everything coming! Nothing was a surprise! Even the minor plot twist, one could guess at before it was revealed.

I also found the tale very long and…, well, dull. It sagged in the middle and the ending was a bit flat.

I listened to the audiobook version of this title, read by Flora MacDonald, she did an acceptable job. I’m glad that this was a free listen - I would have been disappointed if I had paid for it. I’ll only listen to book 2, if it too is free.

I’m very pleased to have had the opportunity of listening to this ebook by
Andrea Kane, narrated by Flora MacDonald. A fabulous romance with an unexpected mystery. The characters were both well developed and defined, as was the amount of depth in the plot. I believe this is the first time experiencing a narration by Flora MacDonald. It was very well done proving her storytelling skills are massive. Andrea Kane is a new author to me, but I loved the book so much I have already gotten the next one, The Silver Coin. It’s a great marriage of mystery and romance! Highly recommend to others. 😊

Gold Coin

This is a series of 2 books, The Gold Coin and The Silver Coin have been my favorites for years. I had paperbacks but over time, I could no longer read the small print! So I've been waiting for them to come out in ebooks! This is a 2-part story of look-alike cousins who grew up together and find their HEA, together. The first book, The Gold Coin, is a story of Anastasia and Damen, who found each other by fateful circumstances. Storyline - and romance - move along quickly.

Gold Coin by Andrea Kane
4 STARS

Gold Coin by Andrea Kane is now a ebook. It is a historcal romance novel that was first published years ago. The book starts in 1803.
Two six year old cousins are playing together when one fell into a puddle of mud. Breanna knew her father would be mad that she got the dress grandfather had bought them dirty. Anastaia wished she was the one dirty because her father would not get mad at all. So since everyone at times had problems telling them apart. Anastaia suggested they trade and be each other.
Thier fathers are twins and they married sisters who looked really close to each other. Thier manners are different and they wear thier hair different but they could pull it off. It worked except with their grandfather he could tell that they were being each other.
Grandfather had a conversation with them letting them know that he knew and would give them time to switch dresses. He also gave them each a coin and told them to hold onto them one had gold and the other silver. They were to never show them to anyone for no matter who wanted it.
Thier fathers never got along but now it was worse than ever. So Anastasia and her parents were going to America to open a branch of the family business. Breanna's father would stay and run the England branch.
1817 Anastasia is back home in England. She just lost her father and had already had lost her mother. Her Uncle had offered her a home with her cousin.
Anastasia and Breanna had stayed close through letters and were happy to be reunited.
When they went to the reading of the will thier were some surprises for everyone.
Stacie was left with a finacial gaurdian the Marquess of Sheldrake for three months till she turned 21. Her Uncle got left with only 10,000 to spend on presenting her to Society. He was expecting to have all control of his niece's money and the half of the company he expected to recieve. Instead Stacie's father left everything to his daughter.
Then the lawyer asked both girls if they brought the coins like he asked them too.
They did not bring them but did admit to having them still. He said if they would turn the coins into him that thier grandfather will left them fifty thousand pounds in trust for each of them.
George hates anastasia only invited her to stay with them to get his hands on her money. He owes a lot of money and is doing a lot of schemeing to get money. He has different plans how to get out of his mess.
Breanna and Anastasia make plans of their own to give them a happier life.
The characters are interesting especially all the changes Breanna can now show. Anastasia will not just be a empty headed girl she has plans for her money and ideas how to help others.
Thier are few love scenes that I skimmed over at the back of the book.
I can not wait till I read the Silver Coin soon. I was given this ebook to read in exchange of honest review from Netgalley.

When they were children, identical cousins, Anastasia and Breanna Colby, store to always be there for each other, to always protect one another.

Now, after ten years in America and after losing her loving parents, Anastasia is once more reunited with her beloved cousin, but the uncle with a foul temper, she'd come to avoid when she was little has turned into a tyrant...And possibly a criminal.
Anastasia, now a wealthy heiress, is still determined to protect her cousin, even if it means incurring the wrath of her uncle. But she has help in the form of her financial advisor (until she turns twenty-one), the fascinating, business-savvy Damen Lockewood, her cousin's Breanna would-be fiancé...At least if her uncle has any say in it.

Yet Fate has her own plans, but in order to get their happily-ever-after, Damen and Anastasia might have to help her along.

This book is worth reading for the suspense alone. There's mysterious cargo being smuggled out of the country, an entrepreneur with a volatile temper that's so deep in debt he's willing to do anything to get his hands on some money, shady characters, even an assassin...

The mystery was quite gripping, the guessing game intense, and there were some pretty tense moments throughout the story. The plot was tight, the pacing wonderful...

The problem was in the romance department. I wasn't really convinced and the whole "ordeal" seemed rather forced.

Still, the characters were nicely developed and the relationship between the two cousins, as well as the friendship between Damen and Breanna nice and genuine.

Fair warning, I’m totally gonna insert my 35% in process update with a few modifications, coupled with a bit of expanded commentary because it’s absolutely relevant to my overall review. Are you ready? Let’s get into!

Gold Coin is the first book in Andrea Kane’s Coin duology with each book telling the story of one of two identical cousins. Yes, their identical. Hardly no one can tell them apart and they switch places when it’s necessary. Their parents are siblings. Fathers are brothers, mothers are sisters. Yes, that happened. Stacie’s father loving, Breanne’s father is a dick. Stacie mom is kind, Breanna’s mom is dead. Those are the facts now for the opinions.

I had an absolute blast rereading this book. Breanna is still my favorite of the two cousins, with Silver Coin (and Royce – swoon) being the highlight of this Duology but I really forgot what a joy Stacie and Damen are. No, really, there dynamic is wonderful. Stacie is smart and strong and full of fire and Damen never try’s to stifle that. He’s on board with her crazy from the jump matching her fire with his and burning that bitch higher. We love a hero who knows what he wants and goes for it. And we love a strong and totally unbitchy heroine who stands her ground and is still super loving and compassionate. People are not boxes, we can be both.

Anyway the second book is high stakes and thriller the whole way through. This one starts with a charming hopeful flare before it's plunge into utter despair and I really enjoyed that!

Emotions are felt. Tears are cried, happy, sad and the like. It’s a whole roller coaster of good times and as everyone knows by now, I’m here for it.

Happy reading!

Romance, mystery and a bit of danger await in the pages of “The Gold Coin” by Andrea Kane. Both a romance and a thriller, this novel was the perfect, quick read for me.

The plot centers around two cousins living in England in the early 1800s, Anastasia and Breanna. The girls look almost identical, despite having very disparate personalities. They are incredibly close, and family and loyalty are qualities they share — a quality Breanna’s father, George, greatly lacks. When the girls are young their grandfather gives them each a coin, one gold and one silver. He tells them not to tell anyone of the coins, or give them away for any reason. Anastasia must soon after move away from Breanna to America, where her father works in the banking business. After her parents untimely deaths, Anastasia returns to England. Both girls, because of their commitment to their grandfather and unwillingness to part with their coins, are granted a large inheritance from their late grandfather. However, this does not please George, who is a scheming businessman who feels any family money should be his. The girls soon find themselves entwined in his greed and need to become as powerful as possible — and gain their inheritances in anyway possible.
