I got this "kit" for my kids and it was a BIG HIT! Hats off to Josie Bissett. The set came with The Tickle Monster book and Tickle Monster Gloves, which matched the character from the book. As we read the story my husband put on the gloves and "changed" into the Tickle Monster and we followed the direction of the book. I used this to teach my little ones the importance of laughing each day... lets just say mission accomplished.
If I could give this more than 5 stars I would! This book fills your home with genuine laughter - nothing better than a child's giggle. This will do it!
This book along with the tickle monster gloves is always a hit when I gift it for baby showers! My boys loved it and enjoyed us reading it to them with the gloves when they were little!
Okay, I know this book is pretty old by now, but I just read it today when the girl I was caregiving for requested I read it. It looks cute, pictures are awesome but I had a lot of issues with it. Largely about the language used in reference to a big monster touching (tickling) a small child. The language is similar to language that might be used by a child sex offender. I hated the part that said something along the lines of I have to tickle you so don’t wiggle or squirm… and something about having to tickle them several times a day… I don’t remember the exact wording on everything but I found it problematic in that I don’t think we should normalize that kind of language or being touched when you don’t want to be touched. There was also a page in the book "Here let me prove it--holy moly kind kitties, The next place to tickle is your (page turn) under-arm pitties” at that point I was really like where are they going with this?? Anyway, no I don’t think I’ll be reading it again personally and I suggest parents read it before reading to children. Make sure it sends a message you want your kids to learn. Be aware that child sex offenders use verbiage like tickle and tell kids to keep their secrets.
This book caught my eye because the cover is cute! This book is a rhyming book kind of like Dr. Seuss's books. It didn't have much of a theme or lesson you could learn from it but it was a good book to read for down time or for younger students to read on their own. It was a fun book and easy read for younger elementary kids. Though it wasn't my favorite child book I've read it wasn't horrible, but I would pick Dr. Seuss before this book.
This book has great illustrations, but the rhyming is sometimes a little too forced (e.g. "Here let me prove it - holy moly kind kitties - The next place to tickle is you... underarm-pitties!").
This could be a great book to read with your child, assuming they love being tickled, but if you want to read it to a group, you'll need to consider the issue of consent. Hmm. I'm not sure it's good enough to tackle that topic at story time.
A young childs laugh is the best result of this delightful book, nothing better than reading along with them and watching hearing reactions at each tickle. Especially the ending. Josie Bissett
This one had too much of an ick factor for me. Big, stranger monster who "must" tickle a child-like character in all kinds of personal places, being told, "don't you move, you better stay putsie," and "no jumping, or flinching, or wiggling." All this and the neck nibbling and, well, yuck. It's all just too predatory for me. BIG ICK!
For: tickle lovers; readers looking for a silly participatory book.
Possible red flags: lots of tickling where the recipient is teased and told to hold still--the recipient is smiling throughout the book, but some readers will have issues with it.
Rated this 1 star as I bought the book and immediately put it in the garbage can to put in the landfill. It is full of trash language like heck and gosh, which are just slang terms for people trying to get away with saying hell and God. I am ashamed I started reading this book to my child.
Very readable— I can remember my mother reading this to me in the exact intonations, and I think it’s very powerful that this book can bring back those memories from so very long ago. The illustrations are also quite cute, even if the threats posed in this book are horrifying. (tickles)
I want to hat this book so badly, every time I have to read it... Again. But the kid giggles and the gloves make me go back every time my kids make me read this bloody book, again.
Maybe I'm not a fan of tickle books? This one felt just a bit awkward. I love the illustrations, but not so much a fan of the rhyming structure or the story.
