“We’ll figure this out. People don’t get stabbed every day. Even in Whispering Pines.”

It’s time for the annual Whispering Pines Tour of Gardens, and people are arriving by the busload. Discussions of raised beds, different types of fertilizers, and proper amounts of sunlight can be heard all around the village.

Then, just as things are getting underway, someone vandalizes the gardens.

Between running her successful shop, Hearth & Cauldron, and dealing with her new teenage roommate who has turned her orderly homelife into the female Wiccan version of The Odd Couple, Reeva Long’s days are full. She doesn’t have time to track down suspects. It’s the middle of the busy tourist season, though, and solving this crime isn’t high on the sheriff’s priority list either.

So Reeva and her sidekick best friend, Ruby, dig in. When events escalate, however, and one of the witches on the tour is attacked, the amateur sleuths fear there’s something more sinister going on in the village.

Mystery and fantasy author Shawn McGuire loves creating characters and places her fans want to return to again and again. She started writing after seeing the first Star Wars movie (that's episode IV) as a kid. She couldn't wait for the next installment to come out so wrote her own. Sadly, those notebooks are long lost, but her desire to tell a tale is as strong now as it was then. She lives in Wisconsin near the beautiful Mississippi River and when not writing or reading, she might be baking, crafting, going for a long walk, or nibbling really dark chocolate. Yet another great book by Shawn McGuire. I am part of her ARC group so received this book free in exchange for an honest review.

Hearth and Hedge is the second book of Reeva Long’s story. She is still reeling from her sister, Flavia’s crimes and reconnecting with being back in the village that was her childhood home.

Her friendship with Ruby is going from strength to strength as is her friendship with Keiko.

Reeva is still trying to figure out why Whispering Pines called her back to the village whilst coping with being High Priestess of her coven.

I was a bit worried at first that the story centered too much on Reeva and Ruby’s PI sideline, but my fears were unfounded. The best part of this story was the return of The Viking (no spoilers). I spent most of the read wondering if he would return.

Reeva is beginning to regain the trust of the village, through her natural kindness and hearth witch talents, which is lovely to see. Hopefully, the sins of the sister will no longer reflect on Reeva.

I am looking forward to book 3 as there are still many unanswered questions. A great tactic to keep you hooked, but seriously, Shawn McGuire writes such amazing stories that this is not needed.

Reeva is an amazing woman, and I can’t wait to continue reading about her next adventure and crime solving!

Thank you, Shawn. Totally enjoyed reading this book!

I received the ARC of Hearth & Hedge; I enjoyed catching up on what was happening in Whispering Pines and seeing what Reeva and Ruby are getting involved in. Learning about Brier and her family and how all is going with the twins. Plus, about the garden contests and learning who was in the running, Zinnia, Gwendolyn, Brigette, and Dale were 4 of them to win. You will have to read the story to see who wins. Keiko and Reeva are still learning to live together, I think it is harder for Reeva because she is a neat freak and Keiko is still young and doesn’t worry about cleaning up her mess. It is a challenge for both. Reeva and Ruby are looking into who is targeting green witches and who are vandalizing their gardens and why. Is Reeva still in love with Gabe, or could it be a teenage crush? Tourist season is in full swing, is always a busy time in Whispering Pines, and it keeps Martin and Jagger hopping. Jayne is back being the Town Manager and River is trying to learn how to live with the Barlow ladies. There is a lot of twists and turns to the story and the ending will be a surprise to you, plus Jozef is back with news, will it be good or cause more problems. Shawn McGuire is a wonderful storyteller, can’t wait to read book 3 in the A Hearth & Cauldron Mystery series.

Another amazing village book. I really love how we are seeing more of the personalities of Reeva and Ruby. These books, and the previous Whispering Pines Series, have the greatest characters. You truly feel like you know these people and laugh and roll your eyes at their quirky, funny personalities. I like the "sleuthing" that happens in these books and how we get to know more about Reeva and who she is, just like how we felt that connection with Jayne.
I'm so excited to see where Reeva's love life takes us. Even though this is not the main part of the series, it is wonderful to have that heart warming add on and root for the love to grow.
If you have not read the Whispering Pines Series that these books developed from, GO READ THEM NOW. They will not disappoint and will leave you wanting more.
These village books are my absolute favorite! I could read nothing but these books!! The only bad thing is that I have to wait for the next one. I honestly mark my calendar and get so excited when a new one comes out. I'm worse than a kid on Christmas morning.
Thank you Shawn McGuire for letting me immerse myself in village life again. I can't wait for the next one...and any other village ideas that may be tickling that creative brain!!

*I received a free DRC of this book with thanks to the author. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*

We’re back in Whispering Pines for this second book in the new spin-off Hearth & Cauldron mystery series, with Reeva and Ruby unofficially investigating a spate of vandalism against green witches that has taken a nasty turn.

Not only do I recommend reading Hearth & Cauldron first, but all of the original Whispering Pines series of books too. Although this can technically be read as a standalone mystery plot, you would just miss out on so much of what I love about this series – the kooky small community, with it’s beautiful and unique setup and quirky characters that have developed as the stories progress.

Plus, the wider story that we saw glimpses of in the previous book now starts to become more evident, as Reeva begins to suspect that the acts of petty vandalism may be linked to something darker and more insidious that threatens to disturb the peace of Whispering Pines and goes right back to the jealousy surrounding the original families from some later arrivals.

Honestly, Shawn McGuire has created characters that feel like family to me at this point, and the shops and eateries feel so familiar that I have to remind myself this isn’t a real place I have visited (I wish it was… less the murder and mayhem, obviously!).

It is so nice to see Jayne, Morgan and Briar, River, Martin and everyone else from a different perspective – it makes the stories feel familiar but also completely fresh. And Reeva brings much more of a spiritual vibe to events than Jayne’s practical policing experience. Plus we get bonus kitchen/hearth witch tips scattered throughout the story at appropriate points.

There are also some lovely side-plots, like the potential romances for Reeva and her maternal-ish relationship with teenage roommate and terrible slob, Keiko; the Barlow’s adjustment to their new arrivals; the village being Under New Management, with all that entails; and the training of a new and rather over-eager recruit to the sheriff’s department. Each and every single thread kept me reading and wanting more.

I would definitely recommend this series to any cosy mystery fans who want a long-running series with heart and plenty of woo-woo spirit. Once you visit Whispering Pines, you won’t be able to stay away!

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Heartb & Hedge and it made for the perfect Christmas read.

We’re back with Reeva in Whispering Pines and we find out a little more about why she left and why she wants to stay. Of course there’s a mystery to solve and Ruby and Reeva are on the case. Reeva and Keiko are learning how to live together, just as Briar is doing her best to cope with all the upheaval at the cottage. Aside from that, we find out that not everyone is happy with the way Whispering Pines is being managed! This brings back the welcome return of past characters, including one that may have made me squeal a little bit!

It was an enjoyable read, with sufficient twists and turns to keep you guessing. I admit that I found it difficult to warm to Reeva in the Whispering Pines series but in her own series I’m starting to see a different side of her. I can well understand the angst of living with a teenager having two of my own so could empathise with Reeva and her difficulties with Keiko. One thing I love about this series are the female friendships. They are so well written and feel true to life. I’d love to have a friend like Ruby and I really enjoyed seeing Reeva and Briar reconnecting and rebuilding their friendship.

I really enjoyed this book and I’m so glad I discovered this series!

I received an ARC copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review.

In this second of the series, someone seems to be targeting the gardens of green witches. Just because people have the same beliefs, and same hobbies, does NOT mean that competition keeps "the dark side" from coming out. Personally, this novel was slower reading for me, as personal aspects of my own life seemed to be touched on. In other words, this novel spoke to me loudly and clearly, so I put it down often to do reflecting.

Anyway Reeva and Ruby decide to help out by investigating who the vandals might be, and what their true intentions are. It's the least they can do, since Sheriff Martin, Reeva's nephew, has to deal with tourist issues. Hmm, Reeva has a date with Gabe...not saying how that went. Where the heck has Reeva's viking, Jozep, disappeared to? Did Reeva make a mistake taking in Keiko? She is acting like a spoiled princess, so no wonder Morgan is keeping her at arm's length in Wicca training.

As usual, I love the author's writing style, concepts, and teases that make you think. Now I'm chomping at the bit for the 3rd novel, I need to know what happens between Reeva and....nope, not saying.

Hearth & Hedge is the second installment of Shawn McGuire’s new series. Again, she has taken us to the magical village of Whispering Pines, where we get a look at a new mystery. Reeva is our main character in this series, and we see her doing some detective work along with her good friend Ruby.

Reeva is a gifted cook, and shares her gift with visitors to the village. When several green witches find their gardens damaged right before the annual garden tour, Reeva and Ruby team up to help find the culprit. These books are well written, and take you to a village full of magic, and mystery. If you’ve not read the Whispering Pines books, go read those, then get busy with the new Hearth series!

Oh Reeva! Her own successful store, being high priestess, vandalism in the village, evil sister, teen roomie, love. There’s so much that Reeva is going through, can she keep her sanity and survive it all? And what is Sheriff Jayne up to? Surprising twists and turns in this story, you won’t want to miss it.

There are so many things going on here! Reeva is hard at work in her shop, rekindling old friendships, cementing her place as coven high priestess, mentoring Keiko, solving crime, and finding her way to love. I love the writing, and especially the relationships in this book. It's like going home. More please!

²Great to be back in Whispering Pines. If you haven't yet read the previous Whispering Pines books, you should. They are all enjoyable and introduce you to many of the characters in this book.
However, this is a standalone book and you will still enjoy it if it is your first trip to Whispering Pines.
Reeva and Ruby are back and are investigating some garden vandalism in the village.
We get some insights into the lives of some of the villagers and Reeva learns to let go of more of the past and look forward to the future with the return of someone she thought she had lost.
I really enjoyed this and look forward to the next book.

Hearth & Hedge is a
story that is told from Reeva's point of view. Reeva owns and runs the store, Hearth and Cauldron. She has a best friend, Ruby who owns and runs the store, Twisted Skein.
They have formed an amateur detective companionship, especially when Sheriff Reed is busy with a stabbing. Some one or ones, might be two, according to a fortune tellers reading, has or have been creating mischief in the green witches' gardens that are on the annual Whispering Pines Tour of Gardens, and tourists are arriving by the busloads. Reeva has a full plate on her hands between taking care of her well scheduled work related jobs and dealing with her new teenage roommate, Keiko Shen, an aspiring teenage witch that's living in her guest room.

This is the second book in the Hearth & Cauldron series. I really enjoyed visualizing the different types of gardens that the green witches had on display. I felt like getting into the spirit of creating a garden myself.

I have forgotten about how some deaths have happened, such as; Rae's and Jasmine's.
It would be helpful if some deaths were re-explained.

We are reminded that River Carr owns and is trying to manage Whispering Pines. While Briar's life has been disrupted in her small cottage containing herself, Morgan, twins Juniper and Talon, and River Carr. Remember this is a "cosy" so things happen for a reason and there really aren't any mysteries. Especially, when Reeva stumbles on video recordings that explains all.

HEARTH & HEDGE is the second installment in the Hearth & Cauldron Mysteries by Shawn McGuire. This well written and page-turning series is a spin-off of the Whispering Pines series that featured Sherrif Jayne O’Shea.

This spin-off focuses on Reeva and she is still feeling unbalanced and apprehensive about her ability to fulfill her position as High Priestess.

It's Annual Garden Tour time and the busy tourist season is underway. That's when someone starts damaging the gardens. Is it a tourist or a villager and why?

Sheriff Martin Reed has his hands full with tourist shenanigans and a stabbing, so he reluctantly accepts the help of his aunt, witch Reeva and her friend Ruby to investigate the garden crimes.

Reeva really didn't need any investigative duties added to her already full schedule of work related jobs, including dealing with the flood of tourists shopping, and with Keiko, her teenage witch roommate that's living with her and now the garden issue that seems to be escalating.

This story had me in the first chapter and kept me going to the end. The most disappointing part of the story was that it ended too soon. For a book that does that for you, how could it get less than five-stars?

You are sure to enjoy the Hearth Witch Tips sprinkled throught the book.

I did receive an Advance Readers Copy from the author. The above is my freely given review.

I always enjoy visiting Whispering Pines. Shawn McGuire brings the little village alive. I lose myself in the village, wishing that I could be a part of it. Her descriptions of scenes and people make them feel so real. I find myself wanting to be friends with Morgan, go visit Pine Time and try Tripp's food, take lessons from Reeva, and join in on all the adventures that are had.

Jayne first drew me into the Whispering Pines mystery series. I loved reading about how she solved mysteries and about how she learned so much more about her family and the town.

Hearth & Cauldron is just as captivating as we see mysteries unfold through new eyes and new methods. Reeva and Ruby are such a fun duo who have each others back as more to the mysteries unravel. Reeva and Keiko is another relationship that I enjoy watching grow as Reeva tries to help Keiko find her ways in the town and with finding who she is. All of the relationships in the books are thrilling to read about and I love that we can still keep up with all the other villagers from the original series.

Whispering Pines is a village that I always enjoy revisiting and I can't wait to read the new book when it comes out!

A “charming” cozy mystery

I truly enjoyed the Whispering Pines Series with Jayne becoming Chief of Police, adapting to the village lifestyle and investigating crimes but, as they say, life moves on and changes and events take place to generate new developments.
With book 1, Hearth and Cauldron, the focus is more on Reeva and her connections to the Wiccan village and her sleuthing partner, Ruby. Hearth and Hedge continues to expand on Reeva’s personal feelings and an opportunity for some closure while opening up new pathways.

As always, Shawn McGuire’s writing is clean and well done with colorful characters and situations that should inspire some thought from the reader.
However, for me, the day-to-day details of Wiccan life and running a business seemed front and center compared to a lack of urgency in solving a crime and following any form of professional procedure – more of a “do-it-yourself” or a light-hearted “cozy” style mystery. Enjoyable but not for serious mystery readers looking for extra intrigue and angst.

My high expectations for the return of Jozef were not satisfied until the end thus leading me to think that the next book will include some anticipated romance…I received an arc and this is my honest and voluntary review,

Such a good second book in this new spin off series in Whispering Pines. As the description says, the village is hosting a garden tour and contest and loads of people are lining up. A couple of days before the tours are to start, one villager's large and spectacular statue in her garden, is destroyed. The first day of tours commence but that night there is more vandalism to several more gardens. Sheriff Martin is investigating but Reeva and Ruby join together again to see what they can find out. The story also gives us a glimpse into the life of the villagers, their businesses, their families, and friends. How is young Keiko doing living with Reeva and helping in the shop? How is Martin adjusting to his mother being banned from the village and "locked up". River - the village owner- wants to use empty cottages in the village for rentals and businesses. He also wants to add a restaurant to the village. Is someone upset with the new plans? Is it someone from the construction crew staying at the campgrounds vandalizing the gardens? Interesting story that kept my interest and the ending made me GASP!
I received a free copy and voluntarily provided this review.

Returning to Whispering Pines never fails to warm my heart. As we follow a new direction of story telling in this quaint village where those who don't fit in elsewhere fit in here, through Reeva, a hearth witch, this is the second installment of her story. The narrative touches on parts from the last book, which only adds value. The storyline focuses on the green witches, their gardens, and the mystery around the vandalism that's happening. The story also touches on how the village is changing and not all the villagers like it, which I think will be explored more in future books in the series.
It was great to see Reeva starting to really explore and understand her value and purpose, building new relationships and rekindling old ones and also seeing the return of Jayne and Meeka who were missing in the last book. Ruby is as fabulous as ever, and it was good to be introduced to some new villagers.
I love this village, and no matter how many mysteries Shaun writes, the magic in this village always captures me to the point I wish it were actually a place! Can't wait for the next instalment!

I love that this book is a page-turner but not in the same way as the Whispering Pines series by this author. It starts out getting the mood set nicely and picks up fairly quickly. While keeping you immersed in the story, it is definitely what I'd call a cozy mystery that unfolds carefully.

I highly recommend reading the Whispering Pines series first not only because there are a lot of spoilers from that series in these books since they take place after the end of that series but also because you feel a deeper connection to several secondary characters encountered in this series from reading about them in the other series. However, if you choose to start with this series, you really need to read the first book in this series before reading this one due to spoilers and having a better understanding of events going on in this one.

This is one of my top 2 go-to authors in that I read anything Shawn McGuire puts out because I know it's going to be fun, interesting, and pull me into that world. I cannot wait to read what happens in Reeva's world next!!

Welcome back to Whispering Pines. In this second book of the Hearth and Cauldron series we follow High Priestess and kitchen witch Reeva and her friend Ruby solve another mystery. In the midst of a busy tourist season and the annual Garden Tour, a vandal strikes the gardens. Is it a tourist or a villager? Amateur sleuths Reeva and Ruby want to find out. This series is set in the Wiccan village of Whispering Pines, always beautiful but not always peaceful. In this book we see a little of Jayne, connecting the two Whispering Pines series. We watch as Keiko tries to find her path in the village and her relationship with Reeva develops. It is not necessary to have read the other Whispering Pines books but there are references to past events that you will understand better if you have read them. Thanks to the author for giving me a copy of this book. It is my pleasure to leave my honest review.

Hearth & Cauldron (Hearth & Cauldron Mysteries Book 2).

Reeva and Ruby are back! It was nice going back to Whispering Pines and getting to know Reeva a bit more. This book lets the reader delve into Reevas past a bit more, her thoughts and her personality. Tourist season is beginning and there already has been an issue that is wreaking havoc on the good neighbors. Never fear thought, Reeva and Ruby are going to help Sheriff Martin with running down the answers. There is also development of a new plan for some parts of Whispering Pines, and Reeva might have a new love interest. This was such an easy read it was like slipping into my comfy chair and talking to old friends. The twists keep you guessing on who the perpetrator is, there are “will she moments”, and a sprinkling of” Witchy” Wisdom throughout the book. Oh yeah….and a big cliffhanger!!! I can not wait for the next book!

This is the second book of the Hearth & Cauldron series, which is set in the village of Whispering Pines. It is written from the perspective of Reeva Long, a kitchen witch who owns a kitchen store in the village, and her friend, Ruby, who owns a crafts store. It is warm in the village, and the tourists have returned in abundance. The current topic of interest is the annual garden tour. The gardens in competition, four each year, have been chosen by the villagers themselves, but the tourists are the ones who get to vote for the winner. However, one of the competitors' gardens gets vandalized. Then, the next day, multiple gardeners report damages to their gardens, not just those of the competitors. What is going on? Is it one person, or more than one? Reeva and Ruby decide that they need to investigate. Through many unexpected twists and turns, Reeva and Ruby are able to unmask the guilty.

I highly recommend this book.

A super captivating fantawesome read

I am a sucker for thrillers, and one written by Shawn, can be nothing less than a luxurious, decadent chocolate cake - rich, satisfying and comforting.

Her gift of excellent narration and easy writing immediately drew me into the story, while her fallible, yet flawless characters made the story very relatable, carrying the reader along on a journey which has twists and turns to the very last page.

I immensely enjoyed reading this second book in the series and
loved how Shawn maintained the suspense of who dun-it until the end, without giving much away. I was hooked into the wee hours, turning pages after pages when I should have been sleeping!!

5+ stars, highly recommended for all those who love a good mystery and like to guess the culprit with each word.

Best enjoyed after reading the other whispering pines books, but an excellent stand alone one too. Eagerly waiting for the next one already!!

Rounded up to 4.5⭐️

I received an ARC of Hearth & Hedge in return for an honest review. I won’t give a synopsis as many others have already done so.

First, what a pleasure it was to return to Whispering Pines! The descriptions of the village and villagers are so vivid I can picture them clearly in my mind and it always feels a little like coming home to catch up with everyone. The friendships among the women in this series are so heartwarming & Reeva’s budding romance with the Viking is something I’m looking forward to following! 💕 As always, Ms. McGuire’s writing is captivating.

The 1/2 star deficit is because I felt I needed a little refresher from the first book in the series - i.e. what happened to Yasmine & the exact dynamics between Karl, Reeva and Flavia.

I loved this book!

Full disclose: I’m part of the ARC group and got an advance copy in exchange for a review. But I couldn’t wait to read it.

The Whispering Pines series by the same author introduces the reader to a delightful village. This series continues in that village so if you’ve read then all, the characters are familiar but not tired. If you haven’t read then all, this book does a good job of explaining the back story for new readers (without feeling repetitive for familiar readers)

This book includes a little mystery, a little love story, relatable experiences for anyone raising a teenager or running a business, and echoes of recipes I want to try. A delight read, and I look forward to more.

I enjoyed reading this book so much, I read it twice! As Reeva Long tries to grapple with becoming the new High Priestess of the Coven of Whispering Pines and figure out her personal life, changes in the Village has Villagers tense and a bit short on trust. Someone is doing damage to the livelihoods of the villagers, but who? Resident or tourist? Reeva and her bestie, Ruby McLaughlin decide to help Sheriff Martin Long to try to figure out who the culprit is. As Reeva helps a resident to recover from an accident, she starts to put the pieces together. Reeva also makes great strides to put her love life in order. I'm so looking forward to the next book in this series. TBH, reading about Reeva's life has helped me to figure out an issue in my own life!

Loved revisiting Whispering Pines, my favorite virtual village. This second book in the Reeva series does not disappoint. We find Reeva with an unlikely roommate, and perhaps a rekindled romance. Or two. And troubles in the village, but the Sheriff is a little too busy to devote as much attention to them as he'd like as it's high tourist season. So Reeva and Ruth lend a hand. Plenty of visits from our favorite quirky characters for those of you that have followed the Whispering Pines series, but you will grow to love them as well if you have not. Once again when I got to the end of the book, I was sorry that it ended and can't wait to see what happens next. Very engaging and easy to read.

It's great to be back in the Whispering Pines! "Heart and Hedge" is another wonderful book by Shawn McGuire! This is a second book in Reeva's story. In this book, we get to know more of Reeva's story. Her life in between Whispering Pines and her life as a mother. On top of it, Reeva and Ruby are back in to investigate yet another crime, or is it a continuation of the previous crime? If you want to find out, you have to get Heart and Hedge today! Great reading, and may the Goddess be with you!

I’m really enjoying this new series by Shawn McGuire! I love that it’s focusing on Reeva. She’s a loving kitchen witch who, along with her best friend, Ruby, have a knack for solving crimes.

A simple crime in her own backyard turns into a spree during the annual garden walk. The outcome caught me by surprise.

We also find out some surprising information regarding her nasty sister, Flavia!

I also appreciate the added Hearth Witch Tips sprinkled throughout the book. I can always use tips on cooking.

After eagerly anticipating my return to Whispering Pines I am thrilled to again be transported to this quirky yet desirable village. The familiar friends have expanded with new people and the story lines deepen connection to a place where I would love to live! Loved the return of Jayne and the ongoing inquiries of Long & McLaughlin. After reading all the books, I look forward to seeing how my favourite characters evolve and this book does not disappoint. I am already anticipating the third book in the 'Reeva' series!!

Was Verne only a member of a group of discontented witches in Whispering Pines? Is the destruction of gardens only the start of things to come?
I am loving Reeva and Ruby's sleuth sideline and it was great having Jayne make an appearance as well. I love how the characters personalities evolve with each book, giving the reader new insights into the individuals.
I am really looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

What a great book! So happy to be back in Whispering Pines. I enjoy how the book is from Reeva's perspective but the characters that create the community are still shown in all their quirkiness. Reeva and Ruby make a great team “sleuthing”. It was nice to see the development of other characters in the village. The perfect book to grab a cup of something warm and spend the afternoon with your friends in Whispering Pines.
