This book has a lot of good principles in it, but overall I found it too negative and lacking practical application. It is organized into chapters, each one talking about a specific "parent trap" to avoid. The overall tone of the book was very negative and discouraging. I did gain some insight about good parenting and how easy it is to try to control our children. The author points out how damaging anger and controlling behaviors are to children. However, he also talks about using rewards and punishments, which can be very controlling, in my opinion, so it felt like he was talking out of both sides of his mouth. I finished the book feeling confused and not sure how to implement the author's ideas because the focus was more on what not to do than what to do. He has another book that I may skim through and see if it's more useful.
James J. Jones has a series of audio tapes that are designed to help adults become better parents. This book is a companion.
He explores different traps that parents fall into, and how to get out of those traps. Even if you have not listened to the tapes this book has some fabulous council for parents who truly want to love, accept, and help their children succeed. The point isn't to change our children, but to improve our parenting to help our children and maybe guide them into making their own changes.
Great advice for parents!!! All parents should read this and discuss it with their spouse. I loved the principles in this book! I really felt that they were correct and a sound way to raise your kids. It's all about agency.... and then consequences!
