Doris Buchanan Smith (June 1, 1934 – August 8, 2002) was an American author of award-winning children's novels, including A Taste of Blackberries (1973).
LAST WAS LLOYD is dedicated to me. Although I think it is one of mom’s best books, I didn't read it until after her death, in 2002. In a newspaper article I found from 1980, mom said one of her children “did not read children’s books.” I don't know who she was referring to. Mom understood that I had difficulty reading, and suggested books she thought I might like. She recommending, REMOVE PROTECTIVE COATING A LITTLE AT A TIME John Donovan, SWIFTLY TILTING PLANET, Madeleine L’Engle. I loved both of those.
If you have difficulty reading take care of it as soon as you can because it only gets harder as you grow older. When I am reading a good book I am more conversant, and have a better mood.
This was a favorite book of me and my brother growing up, and I just finished reading it to Alison. It's one of those young adult books that holds up even as a not-so-young adult. Gives insight into the life of the poor fat loser kid that everyone picked on.
