A devotional for Advent and Christmas through the perspective of England’s foremost Christian spiritual mystic. For generations, readers have found in the writings of Evelyn Underhill the guidance to help them deepen their own interior lives in the Christian mystical tradition. In this lovely volume, Anglican author and editor Christopher Webber has carefully selected inspirational passages from Underhill's most significant works, providing readings for every day of Advent and Christmas, and sharing the timeless treasure of Underhill's spiritual vision.
Evelyn Underhill was an English Anglo-Catholic writer and pacifist known for her numerous works on religion and spiritual practice, in particular Christian mysticism.
In the English-speaking world, she was one of the most widely read writers on such matters in the first half of the twentieth century. No other book of its type—until the appearance in 1946 of Aldous Huxley's The Perennial Philosophy—met with success to match that of her best-known work, Mysticism, published in 1911.
Finally a personal Advent book I could stick with! This is my first exposure to Underhill and I found these bite sized pieces very digestible and good for chewing on throughout the day.
This is a wonderful collection that takes the reader from the beginning of Advent to Epiphany, with short readings that build upon one another. Each reading is only a page or two. It's a wonderful introduction to the mysticism explained by Evelyn Underhill.
I used this little book of devotions for my Advent reading last year and this year. The selections are pithy, deep, and thought-provoking. I like the way they're just long enough to start a profound train of thought, but not so long that you can't plow through them during morning prayer time.
Evelyn Underhill writes from a different century and culture, but her observations are surprisingly relevant and open up timeless truths. She has helped me understand Biblical passages in entirely new ways.
