A perennial Pro-Bowler, NFL tight end Tony Gonzalez has been an unstoppable force for all of his 12 years in the NFL. But for a long time, he ate like an average red meat, pizza, fast food, whatever was plentiful and convenient. Concerned about his long-term, post-career health, Tony decided to change his diet. With the help of Mitzi Dulan, nutritionist for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals, Tony embarked on a revolutionary new clean-eating and exercise regimen that changed his life, elevated his physical and mental performance, and resulted in dramatic, measurable improvements on and off the field. It was this dietary change that led him to break two NFL records€”most touchdowns and receptions by any tight end in NFL history€”in a single season. Now in The All-Pro Diet, Gonzalez reveals the program, low in animal protein and high in whole organic plant-based and unprocessed foods, that has given him more strength, stamina, and e
I read this book before my senior season of college football. As a person who always valued the contribution that nutrition could make to my athletic performance, I have always been an avid student of nutrition. However, I knew that if I was going to make it through my senior year of football I would have to change my diet and begin eating more "clean". I admire Tony Gonzalez and the contribution that he has made to the game of football, so I thought that I would pick up this book and read it.
I chose to give this book a 4-star rating because it is extremely well written, the recipes are awesome, and everything that Tony and Mitzi Dulan say is absolutely true. However, I did not give this book 5 stars because, to actually practice the principles in this book you must be wealthy, have a lot of time to drive to strange places to get organic food, and only work part time at best (to be able to prepare the food the way he would like for you to prepare it).
Nonetheless, while the principles in this book may be very hard to follow,it is still definitely a worthwhile read because you can take a lot of the information in the book and "tweak" it to fit an eating plan that is conducive to your income and schedule.
All in all, this book is loaded with great info, and is a quick read. If you do choose to read it, I don't think you'll regret that decision!
Super simple look at changing your eating life style. It's not a diet at all. It's a way of living and it is actually doable, unlike most "diet" books.
Stumbled across this book and thought it might be interesting to see if the advice still holds up 15 years later.
To be honest I was expecting a bit of a trashy diet book but was massively surprised.
The advice is simple, quality and promotes an excellent diet and philosophy for overall health and performance.
There are some minor claims about avoiding artificial sweeteners, limiting soy foods and post workout meal timing that don't quite match up with the evidence as of 2024 but are understandable given when the book was written.
This is the best "diet" book out there, at least for the purpose of people (like me) who are just looking to lose a little pudge and generally live cleanly. Basically a diet of unprocessed foods: produce, lean meats, whole grains and "good" fats. No gimmicks. I've used it off-and-on for a couple of years and decided recently to pick it back up in order to get myself into better tennis shape.
The recipes (there aren't that many) are basic but mostly delicious. The upfront cost of the supplements (the protein powders, Accelerade, nut oils, etc.) might be a lot for some people--though Amazon has most of this stuff reasonably priced.
The exercise portion of the book is short and not as useful as the nutrition portion. It's sort of an afterthought, but I have other resources for this information.
I loved this book. About half of it is a narrative about Tony Gonzalas' transition from unhealthy lifestyle to healthy and the effects that it has had. I found that following these easy guidelines that I have had significant impacts on my health. The other half of the book is recipes. So far all the recipes I have tried from here are knock out successes, particularly the black bean soup.
This book is heavily based off "The China Study". So if you want to get to the source of the information you would be better off reading that book. This book simply highlights and re-tells much of the information in that book.
Got this from the library for my teenage son who's been looking for ways to revamp his diet as part of his football training. I started reading it and didn't put it down. The nutrition information is smart, practical advice for all.
Really enjoyed this book-mostly for the smoothie recipes and the yummy banana-oatmeal pancakes! Most of the stuff in this book I already knew; however, I feel it would really benefit someone who has little knowledge about what good nutrition really is!
It was a well written book that was also easy to read, Unlike most nutritional books that seem like text books. I recommend this book to any one with some time and interest in bettering themselves.
