Stella is the oldest of three sisters and she’s got a long history of being the one to protect and provide for her family. When a dangerous threat sent the Fairfax sisters on a wagon train journey west, Stella knew her best bet was to disguise herself as a man to keep herself and her sisters safe.
Collin Mason has secrets of his own. And his family isn’t short on drama either, not with his troublemaking twin and an older brother about to get hitched. But he’s the only one who sees the real Stella—and that she needs help.
Collin sees the vulnerability Stella tries so hard to hide. When he becomes the only one she can trust and she discovers that danger has followed her family, Stella must rely on him despite her reluctance…
Lacy Williams wishes her writing career was more like what you see on Hallmark movies: dreamy brainstorming from a French chateau or a few minutes at the computer in a million-dollar New York City penthouse. In reality, she’s up before the sun, putting words on the page before her kids wake up for the day. Those early-morning and late-night writing sessions add up, and Lacy has published fifty books in almost a decade, first with a big five publisher and then as an indie author. When she needs to refill the well, you can find Lacy birdwatching, gardening, biking with the kiddos, or walking the dog. She forced her next words through gritted teeth. “Would you take me to find my horse?” “Sure. As soon as you put away that knife.” He didn’t want to take it from her? “I’ve used it before,” she warned him. It’d been years—she’d been all of seventeen when she’d had to defend herself—but she could still feel the way the teen boy’s flesh had given way beneath the sharp edge of her knife, smell the metallic scent of blood. She’d gotten away with her life, but barely. Collin didn’t blink. “Just don’t use it on me.” He didn’t sound frightened at all. She wanted to frighten him a little. He was so big compared to her. But the memory that had washed over her left her shaken. She slipped the knife into her pocket with trembling hands. Collin had never threatened her. But he hadn’t known she was a woman, either. She needed to tread carefully. She needed to find the stallion. Once she did, she could put distance between herself and the terrible, nosy man. The quicker that happened, the happier she’d be. He swung up in the saddle. “You coming?” He stretched out his hand. She stomped over to him and took it, allowing him to pull her into the saddle behind him. “What’s your name?” he asked again. She stayed silent. Waited for him to get the horse moving. Impatience flared when she realized he was waiting for her answer. “Stephen,” she said tartly. “My name is Stephen.” That’s how it had to be until they reached Oregon.
Fans of western fiction and Oregon Trail fiction have a new series to enjoy! I am thoroughly loving the Wagon Train Matches series by Lacy Williams. Trail of Secrets is book two in the series and you could probably hop in and enjoy this story even if you haven’t read book one, A Trail So Lonesome, but these characters will mean so much more to you if you start at the beginning and go along for the “trail” ride from there.
I really liked Stella and Collin. Admittedly, Stella could be stubborn and spent a good portion of the book by hiding who she was and dressing as a man named Stephen. However, Collin ended up discovering her secret, which bonded the two together in a way. Collin’s character was wonderful and that was clear even in book one. However, in book two, the reader really gets to see the type of man Collin is. He cares for his family, is a hard worker, and has taken the punishment for his twin brother many times throughout the years. This is a man capable of guarding Stella’s secret and dedicated to keeping her and her sisters safe.
Not only does this novel have a great romance, but it has the day to day troubles of the trail, plus some unexpected dangers that arise, of both the natural and man made variety. There were some hair raising moments to go along with the budding romance between Collin and Stella. I’m excited to read the next story in the series.
(4.5 stars)
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but ended up reading the novel on Kindle Unlimited. All opinions are my own.
Trail of Secrets is book two in Lacy Williams Wagon Train Matches Series. While the book can be read as a stand alone, the reader will likely enjoy it more if they read the entire series since characters are linked within the books. I found Trail of Secrets to be a delightful glimpse of life along the Oregon Trail. The author does a wonderful job accurately depicting the time period. I look forward to the next book in this series.
~ While I was given a free copy, I was under no obligation to provide a favorable review. (2023)
A Trail of Secrets is the second book in the Wagon Train Matches series. You don’t have to read the first one to understand what’s going on, but if you get a chance to start at the beginning, it gives a broader sense of the time and characters. The stories are connected, but don’t shy away if you haven’t read book one. It’s an enjoyable read on its own!
Stella has secrets and big choices to make. I empathized with her and wanted her to make the right decisions. Collin has secrets as well and adds to the suspense. It was easy to connect with them both and I rooted for them to find peace.
I enjoyed how the characters discovered who they really were and who they were to become. The story displays character growth, historical appeal, and the importance of faith and trusting God.
First Line: Stella Fairfax wouldn’t call herself an expert at hiding in plain sight, but she’d done it for long enough that it had become second nature. Series: Wagon Train Matches book 2 Genre: Christian Historical Fiction Author: Lacy Williams Page Count: 268
#CoverLoverBookReview received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions are 100% mine.
Enemies to lovers, women pretending to be men to save their own lives, romance and more. I ADORE this series from Lacy Williams. She’s such a fantastic writer. She easily makes you fall in love with the characters, even the secondary ones. And the romance! Goodness yes, I want more of it! **Sigh** Is the next book in the series out yet!?
Stella and Collin were perfectly crafted characters. Their secrets, their pasts, the way they worked together, the chemistry……. I mean I’m not sure I can do it justice. I don’t know why I haven’t been reading Williams longer because man can she write! This book does have an ending that leaves you hanging a little, but I am totally okay with that because I fully intend to read the next book.
Historical romance fans will find themselves fully immersed in this story. Highly recommend!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Every now and then I try a Christian romance just for some mindless reading. This was okay. Honestly not much happened and the characters are static. The story doesn’t even come to a conclusion; it stops in mid thought. Ultimately I just find them wildly unrealistic and boring.
I really liked both books in this series and I am eagerly awaiting the next book. This book like the first one ends in a cliff hanger. This is a love story that starts out with the hero and the heroine being enemies. This is also a tale of what siblings do to protect others. I recommend this book and the first book to all readers that love stories that have a lot of obstacles to overcome. I received a complimentary copy from The author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.
It really helps if you read the first book in the series but if not, you might be able to piece together what is happening with the characters and who belongs to whom! I would highly recommend you read the first book though! This book will make much more sense, plus the first book is fantastic, as is this book! I love books about wagon trains. It's such a slice of American life that is truly a piece of our history. The author has done her research and knows how to write this type of book. There is a lot of factual stuff along with wonderful characters and mysteries and suspense! Collin has had his eye on "Stephen" for a while. Something just isn't right with "him" and his family. He aims to find out what it is and when he does, it knocks him for a loop! Everything changes for him! "Stephen" will do anything to protect his family, including being something he's not. I didn't really agree with how the wagon master made such a big deal of the fact that "Stephen" did what he did but I guess that's how things were handled back then. A wonderful story all around!
This is the second book in the new series by Lacy Williams – Wagon Train Matches. It will help a lot if you’ve read the first book, A Trail so Lonesome, before this one, since it introduces most of the characters in Trail of Secrets. I really enjoyed getting to know more of those characters, and following the story of Collin and Stella. Stella has a lot of secrets! The characters and relationships are very true to life. The plot twists kept up my interest, as well as the day to day aspects of traveling with a wagon train. I’m ready for book 3!
Good story of life on the pioneer trials. I hadn’t thought about what a wagon train would do in a tornado. Scary stuff! Characters were diverse and well rounded. This is part of a series so it’s understandable that there were a few details I didn’t fully grasp. I haven’t read the other books. Nothing that ruins the story, just a few nuances and most of those you can figure out fairly well.
Trail of Secrets, the second book in the Wagon Train Matches series, picks up where the first book A Trail So Lonesome left off—the discovery that “Stephen” Fairfax is actually “Stella” Fairfax—and the continuing story just gets better from there! Since most of the cast of this book is carried over from the first book, I recommend reading the books in order for a better connection and more enjoyable reading experience. As she continues this adventurous saga, Ms. Williams once again excels in giving us a realistic glimpse of the dangers and discomforts of wagon train life and the courage and tenacity of the settlers as the hope of a better life drives them forward. An action-packed plot, compelling, characters, a vividly described setting, and sweet romance kept me reading and enjoying the story from beginning to end. I think fans of historical western romance will love this series, and I look forward to the next book A Trail Untamed. I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Christian Historical Romance is a favorite genre of mine. Trail of Secrets by Lacy Williams is Book 2 in the Wagon Train Matches series. I had the honor of reading book 1 in this series and I was excited to read this book!
Stella Fairfax is the oldest of 3 sisters and has always been the one to provide for and protect the family. Stella decides to pack up the family and head West, as the family faces a dangerous situation where they currently are. She decides to disguise herself as "Stephen" for the Wagon Train Journey West. Collin Mason is also on this Wagon Train and he befriends Stella. He also discovers the true Stella, even under disguise. Collin's family has a lot of drama of their own, but he is the one who truly sees and cares for Stella and understands that she needs help. Collin begins helping Stella as they are still in danger. Stella wanted to resist his help, but she agrees to let him help her and her sisters. Will Collin, Stella and her sisters make it West and to Safety? Will Stella and Collin have more than a friendship?
Wagon Train stories are always so GREAT to read and this series just keeps getting better! Stella seems to be a GREAT sister for providing for and protecting her sisters. She has secrets she is hiding and for good reason. Collin is an AMAZING and Caring person. I really LOVE that he insists on protecting Stella and her sisters. He knows family life can be complicated, as he lives in a complicated family life. The book has many twists and turns and it truly keeps the reader intrigued. I finished the book in about 4hrs, I was so captivated by the storyline, that I could not put it down! I am looking forward to reading more books in this series! AWESOME BOOK!
Trail of Secrets is an amazing book by Lacy Williams. The second book in the Wagon Train Matches, it was so well written that I could smell the camp fire smoke, feel the terror that came because of the weather as well as the rain soaked clothes. Such a well written historical western movement story that the characters both good and bad came vividly alive. Taken place right where the first book ended, be ready for a couple of twists and turns.
The desperation of Stella/Stephen and her sisters as well as the trickery involved by someone they trusted was so real. I wanted to help them myself even if Stella was too proud to lean on anyone. I loved that Colling stepped up to do just that but was wise enough in the end to know how to do that.
I so enjoyed the first book in the series but find the Fairfax sisters on their way west dreaming of a better life to be unforgettable. The conclusion was wonderful, but the past may not be behind the group of travelers just yet. I so want to know what comes their way next. Still there are other characters who must have their stories told too so I patiently, well maybe a little impatiently wait for the next book. There are hints at the end of this book who might be next but I actually wish it was Cooper’s story. I haven’t given up on him yet so his brothers shouldn’t either.
The publisher/author gave me a complimentary digital ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I liked how the author is able to make readers feel like they have traveled back in time when wagon trains were in abundance. The roads were dusty, long and lonely. I can’t imagine going for days being bounced around as you try to keep moving forward with anticipation. The weather was dangerous at times and caused many on the wagon train to lose everything.
Stella is quite a determined young woman who has secrets that she hopes will not come out. A great lesson in the book is trying to deceive others thinking that everything will turn out good. I understood why Stella did what she did but when we try to hide things, God has a way of bringing them to the surface. She finds herself in danger along with her sisters which brings Stella to a hard decision.
Collin is a welcome addition to the story and for some reason has his doubts about this person who always wears their hat low and hardly makes eye contact. I liked how he felt compassion for Stella’s situation. Instead of being angry when the truth comes out, he gives a helping hand.
There are minor characters in the story which make for misunderstandings. Collin’s family relationship is shaken at times when he confronts his brother about something. I think the reason I liked Collin so much was because he gave grace to others and was always there to help those in need.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
It’s not a bad story. And over all I really liked it, but my issue was with Collin and Stella as individuals. I found myself more interested in knowing about Coop than his brother Collin. There is such a broken element to Coop that made Collin almost seem too bland. Collin was a good guy, but perhaps too good?
Stella had a lot of potential and I really enjoyed her sisters, but in much the same fashion of Collin and Coop- I enjoyed Stella’s sisters much more than her. Stella was like Collin- “too good”. There was so much potential to make her more but for me, I just lost interest in her.
This could be because I don’t think she grew as a character at all. Just like Collin never grew as a character. He was good and steadfast from the jump. The Good twin. It felt like the author was going out of her way to say- see Collin is just too good for his brother. Leo and Collin- just too good- Coop is such a useless guy. This made me want to read more about Coop. And Stella was just the bestest sister from the age of 16. It was just too much at times.
The actual plot though was interesting and had moments of great tension.
So yeah. The story was good. The couple was fine. But can we please have Coop’s story now? Maybe he could end up with Maddie- a healer. Oh I would like that story very much.
I am excited by Felicity and August’s tale… which is next!
“I didn’t think you’d come.” “I’ll always be here when you need me.”
What do you get when you combine a wagon train, with its day to day trials, unexpected danger both natural and manmade and a sweet romance? This wonderful story!
Collin is fantastic! He cares deeply for his siblings, is determined to help ‘Stephen’ and ‘his’ family, works hard and is a keeper of secrets (both his and Stella’s). His family has its own drama and danger to contend with. Stella is stubborn, determined, a quick learner and protective. Her relationship with her sisters is special. Their struggle to remain safe and together was touching. I really enjoyed when Stella finally decided to trust Collin with her secrets. Theirs was a sweet romance.
The perils the wagon train faces are eye opening. The major natural peril they faced in this book! 😳 I’ve never heard of a train facing it before but when you think about it, I’m sure that at least one would have.
A few more quotes: “That was a whole lot of we’s back there.” “If you need to find your family, you should go.” “You’re not rid of me yet, It’s all right to lean on me a little—”
“I want to stand by your side. Take care of you.” “I want to do the same for you.” “But right now, I want to kiss you again.”
Note: This is book 2 in the Wagon Train Matches series. While it can be enjoyed as a stand alone, the characters and wagon train trip build from book to book. I’m excited to start August and Felicity’s story soon!
I enjoyed meeting back up with the Mason family as they are on a wagon train journey out west. The first story was all Leo's, now this one is about Collin one of his younger brothers. Collin has been highly suspicious of 'Stephen' and his family since the beginning of the journey. And quite by accident does he see why. Stephen is actually Stella dressed as a man as she and her sisters and a friend are running away from some ruthless men.
However, as Stella is realizing, the frontier and the wagon train journey might just possibly kill them all anyway. Danger is on every side. She is physically tired all the time and emotionally trying to keep things together to protect her sisters. She needs help, and Collin keeps interfering. She knows she could lean on him, but she has leaned on herself for so long and she doesn't really trust men. Can he be different than her father was?
This was good continuation of this wagon train journey and I like how the author introduces the next set of characters for the third book. I am excited to continue this journey and get August's story.
I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
What I think you should know: Trail of Secrets, a Christian Historical Romance by Lacy Williams is the second book in the Wagon Train Matches Series. It is best read after the first book as it follows directly after the first book in the series and continues to follow the wagon train west. I would not recommend this as a standalone as the story is not complete in this book, while the author does give some storylines a sort of resolution there are even more characters whose storyline does not start or end in this book.
What I think about this book: This book was even more exciting than the first, This book follows Collin whose older brother was featured in A Trail so Lonesome. It also features Stephen, who is actually Stella as well as introducing new characters to us. Stella was such a fun character and made me wonder how many women disguised themselves as men or boys to give their family a chance at a better future out west. Collin is a natural protector who struggles to realize he can’t control the choices of those around them or be responsible for them. I love this series and can’t wait to see what happens next on the trail west!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
What a fun novel! I love stories about the wagon trains west and the individual lives of the people who made the journey. This is a fiction account but I love to think that parts really did happen.
Let’s think of this. Women needed to go west for several reasons but often they weren’t allowed. You had to have a man with you to go west. So what if you were a single female or a female head of the household? What then? How could you get your family west?
In this book, our lead female disguises herself as a man so that she and her sisters can make the trip.
Quick fact. This is part of a series. You can read it as a stand-alone but you’ll get the most enjoyment by reading the series as it’s written and in order.
I loved the characters and how their stories played out. It was fun to watch them grow and change and see where they were meant to be.
If you read the first book this one takes up right where it left off.
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received through Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
Lacy Williams’ second book in the Wagon Train Matches Series continues the drama with this suspenseful main character disguise trope.
Stella and one of her sisters take on the identity of men in order to escape from dangerous men who are after them. Even on the wagon train, the sisters don’t feel safe. While Stella makes a poor “Stephen” and a poor horseman, she comes to rely on the handsome, kind Collin Mason.
I like the way Williams revealed Stella’s identity quickly to Collin’s character, thus setting him up for conflict with his family as he keeps her secret. The suspense builds with the fear of being caught as their romance develops.
Williams steadily increased the tension in the story with natural disasters, conflict with minor characters, and the fear of being discovered. This was a true page-turner and fans of Christian Historical Romance will enjoy it as a stand alone or by reading the series in order. I strongly recommend this book.
Genre: Christian Historical Romance, Inspirational Romance, Wagon Train Location: Oregon Trail Time Period: 1860s/1870s Romance: Very clean. Brief mention of kissing. Faith: Light references to faith or church.
Disclaimer: I requested and received an advanced copy of this book courtesy of the publisher. I was not required to give a favorable review. All opinions are my own.
Book two in Lacy Williams Wagon Train Matches series lived up to my expectations. Though you could read it as a stand alone, it will make more sense if you read book one, A Trail So Lonesome. And I’m already looking forward to book three, A Trail Untamed.
In Trail of Secrets we find some mighty deep secrets being kept by the Fairfax sisters. But can they continue with them? These sisters are strong and determined yet soft at heart. The Mason family has their own challenges and secrets. Williams writes her characters so well that you will be pulled into the story with them.
Well researched, we get a good sense of what it was like on the trail. It wasn’t for the faint of heart, that’s for sure. We can smell the dust, hear the cattle, feel the fatigue. Yet all the while there is hope for the future. If they can outrun the past.
If you enjoy historical fiction, you’ll want to read Trail of Secrets.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
Trail of Secrets by Lacy Williams is a work of Christian historical romance. Stella and her sisters are on the run, and Stella is traveling west disguised as a man. She and her sisters fear the men they are running from and constantly are on the lookout for them.
With a massive horse that overpowers her, Stella constantly has to work to control the spirited horse. Collin Mason and his family also travel west on the same wagon train, and Collin has secrets of his own. When he discovers her secret, Collin works to ensure her family’s safety.
I love how the characters connect from the first book in this story, along with the new characters introduced in this book. As the storyline developed, things I believed I knew about the characters and what I believed would happen, but the author took some twists and turns that I really appreciated.
So if you enjoy stories set in the west on wagon trains, check out this book for yourself. I definitely recommend it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK I have always enjoyed wagon train stories, be it watching a movie or reading a book, which I prefer. I find that Trail of Secrets is a very nice story with lots of secrets in the mix. I really enjoyed the historical parts of the story, which was basically all of the book but some parts are better than others. I loved the detailed scenes all throughout the story. It was interesting to follow the wagon train on their journey. There’s a lot of hard work involved in traveling so far. In a way I would have loved going on one of their journeys, but then I’m not sure I would want the loss and everything they go through.
Trail of Secrets by Lacy Williams is getting Five Stars from me! I want to read the.first book in this series, and I can’t wait to see what Lacy Williams has for us next.
A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
I was blessed to read book two in the Wagon Train Matches as it picked up where book one left off and I didn’t have to let these characters that feel like family go. Although it could be read as a stand-alone I highly recommend reading in order as the characters carry over and you get background stories. I admire the bravery that Stella shows by her disguise and how she protects her sisters. Collin discovers and keeps her secret while keeping his own secrets. It is a lesson on honesty and family ties with faith expertly woven in. I love how it depicts life on a wagon train and what that would entail. You can feel the exhaustion at the end of the day and yet having to keep watch, cook a meal, etc still had to be accomplished. I was enthralled with this story and then a curveball gets thrown in and you have a sense of danger added that you didn’t see coming. All in all an interesting and exciting read. I look forward to reading the next installment. I received a complimentary copy from CelebrateLit. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.
We are back on the wagon trail with Trail of Secrets. This book is written by Lacy Williams. This is book two in the Wagon Trail Secrets Book. I have read book one, but it is not necessary.
Stella is the oldest of three sisters and she’s got a long history of being the one to protect and provide for her family. She disguises herself to be a man so that they can travel West. They are also trying to dodge men that have chased them from New York City. However, Collin Mason finds out by accident that she is a girl. He agrees to keep her secret. Collin has secrets of his own.
So many secrets on the wagon train. So many twists and turns in this story. I loved seeing the budding romance between Stella and Collin. I love how the author captured so many raw and real parts of what people would have went through. She has a way of transporting you back in history. I cannot wait until the next book in the series.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.
I adored the first book from Wagon Train Matches series, A Trail So Lonesome. Lacy Williams does not disappoint in the second installment, Trail of Secrets. Since this this part of a series, I would advise other readers to read the first book before starting this one. I believe they would get a better understanding as to what going on. I loved Stella and Collin’s story. It was sweet but with a touch of suspense that kept me wanting to keep reading.
Trail of Secrets will be getting five stars from me. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean historical romance. I am eagerly awaiting to read book three from the Wagon Train Matches series, A Trail Untamed, to see where else Lacy Williams has in store for her characters.
I received a paperback copy of Trail of Secrets from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
I read this book as a standalone, but it's the second book in the series. I found Stella to be full of secrets and surprises while Collin was, in so many ways, a mirror of her with his own issues and secrets. The author went to great lengths with excellent history that made me feel like I was on the trail, with the wagons, in the dust and rain. Think of a more grown-up version of a sort of Little House on the Prairie type feeling, but in a moving wagon that has oh-so-far to travel and having to do it disguised as a man!
I love the historical content and the strong characters that have so much realism! Strength, relying on God, and working together are strong themes in this story. While I hadn't been sure I'd like this story, I wound up liking it a lot more than I'd thought I would. It earned its five star rating from me.
Thank you to Celebrate Lit for my digital copy of this book. This review mine and a positive review is never required.
Stella and her sisters have traveled a long way on the wagon train. They still have a long way to go but will their secret if it slips out force them out on their own? There is already suspicion among some of the passengers. Collin and his family are also traveling with the train trying to reach Oregon with their herd of cattle. Collin’s twin brother Coop has caused numerous problems for all of them, including the reason for their trip in the first place. Along with way various situations seem to derail their plans. Kidnappers, weather, dissent among fellow travelers and thievery. Hitch a ride, avoid the dust as much as possible and be ready for a wild time on the prairie. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author through Celebrate Lit but was not required the write a review.
