This was fun! This is a short story, I can forgive insta-love in short stories because they are fast passed. This book is great if you like m/m romance and just finished reading something big and just want a relaxing-nobrain story. I will give this book a plus because it actually have plot.

We are introduced to Derek, he is a hell hound, basically an enforcer for the supernatural law. Humans know the supernatural existe and the climate between humans and supernatural beings are getting worse over time. They have a solution, bring back an ancient tradition to marry the highest ranked gentleman's of all species to humans so they can calm down the opposition and learn from their mate.

Having a new mate is a challenge, but it gets worse when the results they expect is not the results they get!

MM Romance
Hellhound Human Arranged Marriage
3 Stars ⭐️

For an 80 page book this sure packed in a lot of action. This is a 3 novella series about creating peace between humans and paranormals and what better way to do that than arranged marriages. There’s rules to how this works but basically it’s to show the world that it’s safe for paranormals and humans to co-exist.

This book is about Derek the alpha hellhound who chooses his mate based on smell alone. His mate is a guy named Hollis who was kind of forced into this thing by his uncle but they become utterly smitten with each other. Derek is possessive, territorial and protective of Hollis and I loved the hotness between them.

This is an ongoing storyline so while Derek and Hollis’s story was completely wrapped up, the next books will continue the plot line. There is no real cliffhanger but just know it’s still ongoing. Looks like the final book will come out mid April. Overall though it was a short read and I had a good time reading it. I liked it enough to want to read the next two because the couples interest me a lot.

Lying in bed with a cold, on the mend but still weak and therefore bored and grumpy and nothing will do because emotions and the need to focus are just too exhausting. What to do in such a situation: read something simple, some action but not too much, sex is no prerequisite and if the inherit logic is a bit lacking I certainly wouldn't notice. That was the situation when I decided to go with A Hellhound Called Derek.

Did I get what I was looking for? Let's see what boxes can be checked. The hellhound is of course an enforcer wearing a leather jacket and biker boots and yes, he's driving a Harley. That he's possessive with a big heart is a given. In that case the love interest has to be adorable, blond would be good and virginal the cherry on top. Maybe a slightly self-conscious librarian would do. Bingo, also that cliché box can be checked. The forced mating topic is getting quickly overwritten by the obligatory insta-love. At other times I would be nagging about the useless villain but we get at least a nice kidnapping, though. The whole thing felt like the author did a warm-up exercise between 2 real stories to be quickly consumed with a shadow of a smile and my bored, grumpy self was okay with that.

Reviewing the series in total

My review will cover all three of the novellas in this series as it's really just one big Prologue to the On Guard one as far as I can tell.

I liked each pairing, their premise of being a matched mate is the same but each short follows a slightly different path to get the two men happily coupled up.

There's a main thread running through each too which means minor plot points left open in books one and two, a kind of conclusion in book three to that particular element, but then a new one opening up at the end.

Each of the romances is pretty sweet though, I think I liked book two's pairing best as there was a fair bit of snark in that one.

Overall it's an enjoyable and pretty quick read.

Sweet, Possessive Hellhound

Quick, awesome read. This is exactly what I was looking for.

Hollis and Derek are perfect for each other, but it doesn’t seem like the other mate pairs got off that easy. Will see what happens in their books.

2.5 stars. An okay story about a hellhound and the human he was forced to become mates with. Very insta and the story itself felt pretty rushed. It would be a 3 star read but I'm docking 0.5 stars because when the "hellhound" shifts he's just a horned, winged humanoid demon so I don't understand why he's called a hellhound.

A HELLHOUND CALLED DEREK starts a new series for Michelle Frost and I'm looking forward to reading more. Derek and Hollis make a great couple and even though their mating is arranged, Derek knows right away that Hollis is meant for him. Their attraction burns hot and fast and they fall quickly but I enjoyed it; Hollis was really sweet and Derek makes the perfect protector.

Not even sure what's going on with this one. It's an arranged marriage that ends up being too convenient. What was even the point?

They get married and discover they're both nice guys and the sex is good and then they team up to thwart his police commissioner uncle but also one MC is a hellhound shifter. Literally that's it. That's the book.

Not a hellhound - shifted form was winged demon. Too short and undeveloped. Abrupt ending. Great story and MCs.

Review:
MC1: Alpha Derek/demon
MC2: Hollis/human
I like Derek & Hollis. This is the first book in the Mated to the Human series and I think it is off to a great start. Derek & Hollis are forced into an arranged mating to try and bring the paranormal’s and humans together. I think this book ended more on a HFN than a happily ever after. I look forward to reading Book 2, its about a different arranged couple but I hope to see Derek & Hollis in there.

Fated mates

How lucky could Hellhound and paranormal enforcer, Derek, get when his arranged mating to human, Hollis, turns out to be his fated mate. Too bad, Hollis' uncle only sees the mating as getting a foothold in the paranormal world...

Size difference? Yes please. Protective and possessive mates? Sign me up. Throw in an arranged mating, bite-sized novella with instalove? How could I refuse?

I’ve read Frost’s writing before and it hadn’t been for me at all. However I was really interested in this premise and I’m glad I tried it, because I really enjoyed both the writing and of course the book’s story itself! Hollis and Derek were super cute and I definitely could read more of them.

It’ll be interesting to see how the plot thread of HAP and other couples fare!

Wow! this is going to be an AMAZING series! This is a shorter book than most but it Michelle Frost leaves nothing out! I loved it! This is Derek and Hollis story and it's complex, intriguing, action packed, steamy, romantic, a page turner and oh so good! I'm so excited for this series! I can't wait for the other books in this series! I read an advanced copy of this book and this is my unbiased review!

A great start to a fun new series. I liked Derek and Hollis. Especially liked Michelle’s take on a hellhound. Looking forward to what happens next as there are a few unanswered questions to do with the over arching storyline. Only criticism and I know this is a novella but the end was rather abrupt. Hopefully we will see more of these two in the next part.

Quick, enjoyable read. To help human & paranormal relations, the paranormal leaders and humans have agreed to arranged inter species matching/mating. Hellhound Derek is matched with Hollis, the human police commissioner’s nephew.

I like that we met the MCs before they become a couple and discover that Hollis’s uncle is a bigoted POS. While I would have liked to learn more about the MCs and their new life together, I’m also thrilled to read a book without a lot of unnecessary detail and drama. I’m hoping the next book continues with the storyline since we’re left with a little bit of a cliffy.

A Hellhound Called Derek
By Michelle Frost

I really enjoyed this book. I loved both Derek and Hollis. I liked how Derek was protective of Hollis and that Hollis was on the innocent side. I liked their relationship together.

My only complaint is that it felt like the book was too short, and there wasn't nearly enough to it. I was left feeling like, that's it? This is the first of the series, and from the description of the next book, it -seems- like it's a continuation of the overall storyline, but with a new couple. So, who knows... maybe we'll see more of Derek and Hollis.

This is very much an interesting premise. A world where paranormals and humans live together, and their leaders get mated to humans for political reasons. I could have used more worldbuilding and a bit more filler moments to flesh out the relationship between each other and the other hellhounds, even a bit more of an image of what hellhounds do as the paranormal enforcers. But I overall liked Hollis and Derek. Their bad boy/good boy image was really nice.

it’s worth the afternoon to read

This is a paranormal romance, the first book in a series that should be read in order. This was a short but active story with a couple of steamy characters. I wish I knew what happened next but my assumption is that each book will take the story a little further. It’s worth the afternoon to read

3.5 rounded up to 4 since a possessive alpha is my kryptonite. Especially if he is accompanied by a mate who isn't afraid to stand up for himself.
Nice easy read will some elements of a decent plot. This is a short story so not a lot can be included but I like the concept.

Just a simple and sweet romance. It’s a fast, easy read, with a small conflict at the end that’s easily and immediately resolved. The pair is very sweet and cute and i wish we’d gotten more time with them and with their story in general. It took like an hour to read and seemed to be setting up for a larger conflict in later volumes though it seems like there’s only two more in the series with other couples which is kind of a bummer bc i would’ve liked to see more of this pair’s life together as they adjust and learn more abt each other since it was sorta insta-love or at least immediate attraction and then fell for each other quickly after. I don’t mind insta love despite how unrealistic it is bc sometimes it’s nice to have ppl just fall in love and know they like this person and things work out easy but bc of the fast pace of this book despite how little really happens in it, it does make things a little unsatisfying to read at the end.
