The Legacy of Villains

Rate this book
Obsession, betrayal, deception, and magic combine in this darkly enchanting enemies to lovers retelling of Peter Pan.

Jolie Hook knew better than to make a deal with the shadowy and charismatic Peter Pan. He was ruthless, bloodthirsty, uncontrollable. He started the Merfolk War and forced the fairies out of Neverland. He murdered her mother in cold blood ten years ago.

But when Pan lures her father to a peace-treaty meeting only to kidnap him instead, she has no choice but to strike a bargain: make it to his castle within three days, and he will let her father go.

All that stands in her way is the Neverwoods, the beguiling forest teeming with Peter's beautifully dark magic as well as ancient, slumbering beasts. As her enemy sends illusions and nightmarish games meant to torment her into defeat, Jolie begins to unravel the mysteries of Peter Pan, including the secrets behind his dangerous shadow magic and his obsession with trapping her in his realm forever.

Battling an otherworldly girl from Peter’s past, the vicious truths of the Hook legacy, and her own treacherous attraction to the enemy, Jo races against the clock to save her father and secure themselves as the winners of Neverland’s fiercest unending war.

Peter Pan and Captain Hook meet to negotiate a proposed peace treaty. But it’s all just a ruse, a trap designed for the wicked Peter Pan to kidnap Captain Hook.

Now it’s up to Captain Hook’s daughter Jolie to rescue him. But to get to Peter Pan’s castle, Jolie has to face the many dangers awaiting her in the Neverwoods. And the eternal youth is taunting her, messing with her head, using his shadow magic to trick her and lead her down the wrong path, every step of the way.

The setting is one of the best parts of this book. Because we already know what the setting is supposed to be like. We know what Neverland looks like because of the original story and the many popular adaptations. So when you turn the concept on its head and turn Peter Pan into a villain, it changes everything. And the author does a good job of showing us the effects of that on that magical setting.

I also like the back story of Jolie Hook. And this is where the title plays a really big part. She considers Peter Pan the enemy because he kidnapped her father, killed her mother and slaughtered the mer folk. But she never stopped to think about how the war started in the first place. And from the very beginning, Peter Pan tries to explain to her that they’re pretty much all villains in Neverland. Or as it says on the cover: “there are no heroes left in Neverland.”

I’m not a big fan of the romance genre, so take this with a big grain of salt. But I think the story could have benefitted from losing the romantic subplot as a whole. It would have made the story that much darker and more gripping. And it would have made the antagonist feel more like an antagonist. Like an actual villain if you will, as the title of this book would suggest.

I will admit, the romance part is foreshadowed well. There isn’t too much romance in here, as it’s definitely not the core of the story. And the romance doesn’t go too far for a young adult book. Though the romance showed up a bit too abruptly and early in the story for my taste. It might have been better had the story taken a little bit longer to work up to the romance. For example, in the beginning of the story Peter Pan is laughing at Jolie Hook while trying to kill her. Then something unexpected happens and he immediately saves her, despite the fact that he just tried to kill her. When she wakes up, they have dinner together. She doesn’t like it but she doesn’t stop it from happening either. So it’s clear from the get go that there’s something else going on, besides animosity. Once again though, this could just be my personal preference.

If you’re looking for a dark and creative young adult Peter Pan retelling with some hints of romance, this might be right up your alley.

I was really unsure at the start of this book that it was going to work as there have been a good few retellings on this story.Soon forgot that thought! This is a very well thought out read with entertaining characters, well paced & the world building is first class. I would have like a little bit more of Wendys' character to shine through. Would recommend anyone to read this. I received an advance review copy for free from booksirens.com, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Peter Pan has never been my favorite but I liked the twist put on his character in Once Upon A Time. I loved that show! So when I read the premise for The Legacy Of Villains by Juliet Lockwood I was excited to read it. In this Peter Pan retelling Captain Hook has a daughter and she must rescue him when he goes missing after attempting a peace treaty with the mysterious, elusive, villainous Pan. For years Neverland has been in a war. The fairies are gone and so is Jolie's mother, murdered by Pan.

Reading this you instantly feel like you are inside a fairy tale. Magic and wonder is always on display. Everything is described so wonderfully and I am amazed at the author's imagination. Anyone who likes to fully visualize scenes is going to have a great time. So many scenes are going to stick with me. I could read more just about that part when Jolie plays a game with a certain character. So entertaining!

There are some surprising characters to love. They are all really different. Peter Pan himself is... I don't want to say too much about him except that you are going to love him. Let's keep him mysterious until you discover for yourself!

I hope there is another book in this series. Thank you to @booksirens for the ARC! The Legacy Of Villains will be released March 21.

I couldn’t bee more wowed. This book has it all. I had high expectations before starting it and it managed to be even better. The world created by this book is perfection. The setting is Neverland. A place known and dear to many. Only this time around is much darker. The culture, the natives, the characters we knew and the ones we get to meet now. This time Neverland is hunted by a war leaded by Peter Pan and Captain Hook. A fight that transcends the limits of time. And it feeds in betrayal and lost.
With this setting in mind. Each characters endures a hard life. All of them have lost people dear to them. No one is safe. And no one is innocent.
The characters are incredibly well written. All of are well developed, deep and easy to love. The changing narration among them only helps to be even more invested in them. The world building is just as the story, magical and with touches of darkness. The introductions of the characters are super cute and talk about another time. The plot is fun, easy to fall for and keeps you on the edge of your seat in every turn.
A read for any fan of Fantasy, world building, Peter Pan, hunted heroes, morally grey characters and adventure!

Oh I'm the first to review, look at me go! ☺️

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

7/5 stars. I'm sorry but 5 didn't feel right. This book had just the right amount of magic, romance, action, and I ate it UP. I really did love the whole idea of Peter Pan and Hook's daughter. It worked so well, and I loved the world-building here too. The magic was lovely to follow, SO much fun. I can't wait to buy the physical book when it comes out.

this story had me invested from start to finish, and I literally could not put it down. fairytale retellings are one of my favorite types of stories and this one definitely did not disappoint. I have read many Beauty and the Beast retellings, and several Peter Pan ones (tho not as many) but this one felt so different and it was definitely unique. The way this author used the world and characters of Peter Pan but added the plot and various elements of B&B was incredible to read. and I know this is a YA fantasy but the romantic tension had me on the edge of my seat almost as much as the story itself.

The characters? AMAZING. I absolutely loved them. Jo has pushed herself onto my list of favorite FMCs with her strength and character and Pan? If you've seen the show Once Upon a Time he gives me Rumpelstiltskin x Hook vibes. and while we are on the topic of characters from OUAT, Jo gave me major Emma vibes too, which (again) I absolutely LOVED.
Overall, (if you can't tell) this was incredible, amazing, wonderful, (insert more synonyms of incredible here). and I NEED MORE. I can't wait to see what this author writes next. You should definitely check this out if you're in the mood for enemies to lovers, morally gray MMC, magic, challenges, riddles, adventure, pirates, secrets and the question of "who is *really* the villain?" 👀

I was hooked on this book right from the first line! (Pun intended 😂). From the beginning, we're swept into the magical world of Neverland, but it's not the classic one you'd think of. I really enjoyed the world building in this story. Even though it's a retelling of a classic that I know well, each piece of history that was shared was exciting and new. The Legacy of Villains pays homage to details from the original, but also creates something brand new and refreshing to read. I especially enjoyed the twists on the characters themselves!

Jolie was a strong and inspiring female lead, and I rooted for her from the beginning. Seeing her explore Neverland and learn more about the past was fun to read about. I just had to know what would happen next! I also enjoyed seeing her grow as a character as the story progressed. The enemies to lovers trope was done really well! There were distinct periods of time where the characters were enemies, and then we saw them slowly transition to more. However, I would have liked the in between period to be a bit longer. It would have been fun to see the characters become closer as friends before their relationship progressed further. This book also explores the idea of family expectations and pressure which added more depth to the story.

I love Juliet's writing style! The prose flowed nicely and seamlessly through chapters and perspectives. The chapters themselves are also short (something I love!) and this made the book easily bingeable. I've saved so many great lines and quotes that I loved! Another aspect that was interesting was at the beginning of each chapter there were little snippets of a fictional book called The Mostly Accurate Traveler's Guide to the Ancient World of Neverland. In them we got to learn facts about Neverland and its inhabitants, everything from how the government runs, to what to buy at the gift shop! These were a great touch and give insight on what's to come in the chapter, and they made the world feel more expansive and real!

The ending was satisfying but also left me so excited for the sequel! I can't wait to learn more about this world and see the characters continue to grow. I definitely recommend this book to everyone who loves Peter Pan and the enemies to lovers trope!

The Legacy of Villains is a captivating and magical tale, filled with daring sword fights, engaging characters, and exciting romance. It talks about the importance of forging your own destiny and above all, the power of love. Get ready to be charmed by this shadowy version of Peter Pan, and fall in love with this expansive world.

This is closer to a 3.5 than a 3, but Legacy of Villains is a nice debut and fun YA Peter Pan retelling! I really enjoyed the concept of this one, and the first half of the book was really great! I also liked Jolie and Peter's dynamic throughout most of the book, really, and it was enjoyable to learn more about Peter and also the history/conflicts of Neverland through Jo's eyes. Juliet did a really nice job with the pacing of how things unfolded plot-wise. The outline and series of events leading up to the ending did meet expectations! Unfortunately, it just felt rushed emotionally when it came to the relationship toward the end of the book, particularly the final 25%. I know there was a lot that needed to happen to kind of resolve things and yes, there were a lot of revelations, but it still felt like there was a sudden ramp-up.

Their interactions were believable to me and there was somewhat of a chemistry, but not really enough for me to (major spoilers for final 20%):

Also, this is a nitpicky thing, but sometimes what distracted me was when Peter's dialogue wouldn't have descriptions around his lines, but Jo would. It didn't happen too often and it's not like there always has to be descriptions around dialogue, but I really did like when Juliet would describe his body language, his expressions and tones, so it stood out when it wasn't there. Honestly, Juliet did a really great job with Peter's character overall too! I did like when we get his POV, and it was fun how she incorporated other major characters in his life in here. Like Tink is a freaking badass and one of my fave side characters. 🤣 I also really liked the chapter openers with the guide to Neverland. It added a lot of great flavor to the writing!

While I do think the sequel could be interesting and have potential too, I'm not sure I want to read on about Jolie and Peter as Juliet kind of tied things up neatly here. As I mentioned, I wasn't really emotionally tied to Jolie and Peter as a couple as much as I was hoping to, but maybe their dynamics in the sequel could make me more invested.

Never make a deal with Peter Pan. Jolie Hook knows this, but when he kidnaps her father she doesn't have a choice. If Jolie can find her way to Peter Pan's castle within three days he has promised to release his prisoner. Now she only has to get through the Neverwoods, the forest which is full of Pan's dark magic and ancient beasts. The one thing keeping her sane is the thought of rescuing her father - and stick her sword in Peter Pan.

A magical retelling of Peter Pan, where we get to follow Captain Hook's daughter! Ten years ago her mother was killed by Peter Pan and he's been Jolie's sworn enemy ever since. This Peter Pan is both charming and playful, but he's also got a dark and vicious side. Tinkerbell still is a fae, but she's Peter's assassin. Captain Hook loves his daughter and Jolie adores her father, but she's also afraid she will become like him. She eagerly awaits her time as Captain of Jolly Rogers, but after spending some time with Peter Pan she learns frightening things about her father.

"Peter Pan had been her villain her entire life. Her father had been her hero. Why were the lines so blurred now?"

Every chapter begins with an excerpt from "The mostly accurate traveler's guide to the ancient world of Neverland", and it's both fun and interesting. The story is told mostly from Jolie's point of view, but sometimes it shifts to Peter. The characters are fleshed out and they grow with time. The book contains several of my favorite ingredients: magic, pirates and enemies-to-lovers!

I received a copy of eARC for my honest opinion.

We all know Peter Pan's story but what do we know about Captain Hook? Did you know that he has a daughter, and her name is Jolie. We all know why Peter Pan and Captain Hook do not like each other, but what if the story we learned was all wrong?

I love retellings of all the fairytales we learned about when we were younger, but I love them even more when an author can take a fairytale and change everything and make it something so wonderful.

I really enjoyed this book, and I knew that I would after just reading the first few chapters. I really felt that I was there with the characters, through all the drama, action, romance and so much more. I thought the author did a great job with the world-building and the well developed characters. Lockwood has a way with words and imagination that really brought this world together. I never got bored in the book, the fast pace of the chapters and the plot kept me wanting to know more and more. I really enjoyed the quotes from The Mostly Accurate Traveler’s Guide to the Ancient World of Neverland book on every new chapter. It just gives you a sneak peek of what to come in that chapter.

I loved all the characters in this book, from the 2 headed birds to our main characters. I thought having Jolie, Captain Hook's daughter in the book and getting her side of the story was perfect. I loved how we got a strong, determined young woman, I also loved how much she cared for others and the ones she thinks of as family. I loved how you got to see how she develops throughout the whole book, it wasn’t rushed and it was dragged out where you got bored too. Peter Pan is someone I would be lusting over!! I loved his dark energy, but at the same time is teasing banter, and his playfulness. I would tell you more, but I want you to pick up this book to find out more about this wonderful world and characters. I can’t wait to read from this author.

If you love retellings, romance, magic, enemies to lovers, banter, and everything you would want in a fantasy you need to pick up this book and read it.

I want to thank Booksirens and Juliet Lockwood for the opportunity to review this book.

I downloaded the ARC as soon as I got to know that it's Juliet’s debut novel. I didn't know what to expect and dived into it without reading the synopsis and I must say I made a good decision.

In this re-telling of Peter Pan story, you go on a journey to Neverland which is filled with magic. I don't think I have watched Peter Pan so I can't compare but the author did a good job with writing. I was drawn to this world and was hooked till the end. I felt the last chapter was a bit rushed and could've been better but it can be over looked.

I highly recommend if you're looking for a fun, enemies to lovers, fantasy read.

This book caught my eye because of the title, cover design, and nostalgia for Peter Pans story that I hadn't thought about in years and years. I got an advance reader copy (ARC) in exchange for an honest review.

It's a story of a boy and a girl, their legacies, their self-perceptions, and so much more. With a great balance between a somewhat predictable set of events and page-turning twists and surprises, "The Legacy of Villains" left me wanting more.

The main character, Jolie, is fierce and determined. Peter Pan is charming yet full of darkness. All the other side characters fuel this wonderful retelling (or expansion on the original story?) and make every chapter enjoyable.

It also made me want to go to Neverland, and wish that star portals were a thing.

Ready for the next book (and hope there is at least one if not more in the author's head/plans!).

I'm not usually a Peter Pan fan, but this was a great YA retelling! One of the little teaser blurbs was so good, I picked this up solely based on that. It's like a beauty and the Beast meets Peter pan. I think YA readers should definitely check this one out. It's full of whimsy, and action, and enemies to lovers. The writing is fantastic as well.

As I have mentioned in previous reviews, I get nervous when I read fairytale retellings, as I often have negative experiences with them. However, this story was one of the better retellings I have read! It had some unique role switches, where good characters in the original story were morally grey instead. I especially loved the twist on Tinkerbell's character! Overall, there was excellent character development throughout the book, and I just had fun reading this story! If you are a fan of retellings with a dark twist, or just like fairytale retellings in general, check this book out once it's published!

Thank you to the lovely author, Juliet, for providing me with an ARC!

I never thought I could think of Peter Pan as a steamy character, but never say never in Juliet Lockwood’s version of Neverland! This enemy to lovers, action-packed novel, kept me engaged from page one. The author created unique, robust, and fully developed characters, while still paying a respectful and creative homage to the origin story. It’s a captivating debut novel and I hope to read more of Ms. Lockwood’s adventures of Jolie Hook and Peter Pan in the future!

The Legacy of Villains: There are no Heroes left in Neverland by Juliet Lockwood. This is not a sweet fairytale "Peter Pan", but a dark new story with familiar characters. Captain Hook's daughter, Jolie, is one of the main characters and I found her to be interesting. I thought that there was so many twist and turns and surprises. I thought that the author did an outstanding job of making a very familiar story fresh and new. I think this fantasy was exceptional. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.

I am a big fan of Peter Pan, and I really enjoyed this retelling. I felt the characterization of Peter Pan was on point, but it was a fresh take from the perspective of Captain Hook's daughter. The story itself was packed with action and filled with lush descriptions of Neverland. I would have liked maybe a bit more involvement from the original characters (Tinkerbell, Wendy, etc.) but did enjoy their additions to the story. Overall, it was a great fairy tale fantasy and it kept me thoroughly engaged. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Thank you to Book of Matches Media for gifting me an arc in exchange for an honest review.

I really wanted to love this book. It’s a Peter Pan retelling from the perspective of Captain Hook’s daughter, Jolie. It’s described as an enemies-to-lovers, action-filled YA novel with a morally grey love interest, and while I agree with the action-filled plot and morally grey character, there isn’t really any romance. There is a slow-burn tension between Jolie and Peter, but the romance plot is lacking. And while the story is marketed as a Young Adult novel, I feel like the writing style is very juvenile. It moved too fast and was almost too easy to read. Not that is a bad thing, but I felt nothing was happening despite reading it extremely quickly.
I just don’t think that I am the right audience for this book. After reading many retellings, I think theres a certain style I like to read and unfortrunatly this wasn't for me. I do think that someone who reads middle grade would really enjoy this though. Many people absolutely love this story, but it just wasn’t giving what I was expecting from it.

CWs: death, death of a parent, mentions of war, fighting, violence

Thank you to Book of Matches Media and the author for sending me an eARC to voluntarily read and review.

I really enjoyed this one. I thought it was a fun concept, and the retelling aspect of the story was really interesting. I liked the twists that were added to the original story.
I really liked the main character Jolie. She was realistic relatable, and I really liked her strengths throughout the book. I thought her relationship with Peter was really good. The tension between the two characters was fantastically written. The author did a really good job at creating the relationship between Jo and Peter and I really liked reading about them.
The pacing of the story was pretty good. It was mostly fast-paced, but there were some slower parts. My one thing with it was that I thought Jo’s quest to get through the woods and get her father back was going to take longer actually did. It happened pretty quickly. It was over before the halfway point of the book and that threw me off a little bit. Other than that, I thought the pacing fit well with what was happening in the story, and it gave time for Jo and Peter to develop their relationship and for Jo to start to realize that things weren’t quite what they seemed.

I loved this book!!! I’m very fussy when it comes to my Peter Pan retellings - not gonna lie, he was a bit of a childhood crush so he’s gotta be perfect in any novels I read and let me tell you - this book delivered!! He’s just the right mix of mischievous, messed up, and desperate for love but won’t admit it proud romantic, and I was obsessed!

So the plot focusses around a new character - Jolie - Hook’s daughter. I loved her feistiness and her complex relationship with her father with loving him but growing to realise parents aren’t perfect (a hard lesson to learn and the book did this theme well!). When Hook is kidnapped by Pan, she is challenged to complete a timed quest to get him back.

At the start of each chapter is a quirky header that had me giggling (it reads as a travel guide to never land) and the setting itself gave me alice in wonderland crazy vibes. Beautiful.

The romance was slow burn and I can’t wait to see how this takes off in book two!!

The Legacy of Villains is scheduled for a March 21, 2023 release

Neverland like you’ve NEVER seen it before

Neverland is as picturesque as it is dangerous. Even now after the wars, Peter Pan and his lost boys terrorize the land. Only Captain Hook and the crew of the Jolly Roger dare to oppose them, and they have been sparring back and forth for years. But the one that is most desperate to get her hands on the elusive eternal youth is none other than Hook’s very own daughter, Jolie. Harboring a hatred for Peter Pan ever since the murder of her mother, she will stop at nothing to exact revenge. When her father accepts Peter’s invitation to engage in peace talks she is livid; and when her attempts to have him reconsider fall short there is only one thing she can do. Taking matters into her own hands she sets out on her own, using her savvy as the only daughter of the greatest pirate ever known to navigate the perils of Neverland. But after coming face to face with Pan himself, she does the one thing that she knows she never should do and makes a deal with the trickster. Given only three days she must find her father who is being held in Pan’s castle. If she does, he will be released but if she doesn’t? Only Pan knows what will happen. Not knowing where she is going and with danger at every turn, Jolie finds herself receiving aid from the strangest of characters… names who have been thought that have been long gone from the land. What begins as a revenge rescue mission could very well end up to be the rescue that the entire land needs.

The Legacy of Villians is the debut novel by author Juliette Lockwood and is sure to be a delight for anyone who is familiar with the story of Peter Pan. I picked up a copy of this book based solely on the fact that growing up I was a huge fan of Peter Pan and anything pirate related. Even to this day, the pirate theme tends to follow and speak to me on some level. With these two factors in mind, I jumped head first into this tale and did not look back. Lockwood takes the traditional story and turns it on its ear; transforming Neverland into a place where the heroes are the villains, and nobody is completely innocent. Using the bones of the beloved story she has crafted a world after Wendy, John and Michael have long departed Neverland. The splendor and wonder that was once her legacy is now gone. The merfolk have all gone into hiding, the fairies are all but extinct and the natives aren’t even mentioned. Even though Lockwood’s Neverland does not completely resemble the beloved image that many are accustomed to there are enough similarities that it is no problem to visualize the world as it is now. Throughout the story there are nods to previous characters and quite a few easter eggs that hearken back to the classic tale. To say The Legacy of Villains is a fantasy does not do it justice. This book is fantasy, dystopia, romance, and hope all rolled up into one amazing read. If you are one of those hopeless romantics who were rooting for Peter and Wendy, you are in for a treat with Peter and Jolie. As the story unfolded, I found myself wanting more. To tackle such a well known and universally beloved story as this for a debut novel took guts and Lockwood knocked it out of the park as well as leaving the door open for a return to Neverland and the characters as she has reimagined them. If this happens I will be front and center for the new adventures that Lockwood dreams up with the old (and some new) favorites.
For fans of the classic Peter Pan story who are open to a retelling that will blow your mind, The Legacy of Villains awaits, and you will not be disappointed.

This was such a fun Neverland retelling! I zoomed through it and found a new nickname that I absolutely love.

My darling girl, I think you might be my new favourite toy

Three days, darling girl. My castle is somewhere in the woods, and your father is somewhere in my dungeon. Better hold on to that sword tight – who knows what kind of nightmares lurk behind these trees?

We are introduced to the main character Jolie Hook as she races against time and magic to save her father, Captain Hook, from Peter Pan. The adventure through the Neverwood was great. You didn’t know what was real and what was magic, it was exhilarating.

Her fists caught a handful of crunchy brown leaves, which squealed in annoyance until she dropped them and they skittered back up into their tree.

I absolutely love stories that have sentient buildings/places. The Jolly Roger, The Neverwood, and The Castle all had minds of their own and it just makes the story so much more enjoyable – and usually adds more humour!

Tinkerbell was known as the best assassin across the land…if that winged snake lifts a finger against my father I’ll feed her to an angry spine-fish.”

There were so many funny little comments or moments: the bird with 2 heads! Loved them! Also, I’m not very familiar with the details of Peter Pan, so I definitely missed some things, but I did not see the end for those birds coming!

Just looking out for my toys, he decided. But Peter knew that if he had a heart, it might’ve beat for Jolie Hook at that moment.

I had 2 main problems:

1. The world-building was a little lacking. I think that’s because it is a Neverland retelling so its expected that you know the story and background enough, but I would have liked it to be a little more fleshed out, a little more whimsical and fairy-tale-like. Especially since its been so long since I’ve read anything in this retelling.
2. Jo was kinda…stupid?😅 She fell for every trap that was set up. She even fell for the ones that weren’t set up for her too.

BUT…

I am eagerly awaiting, and hoping for, a book 2!

If you want me to bleed so badly for you,” he said, voice rough, “all you have to do is ask.

Thank you so much to Book of Matches Media and the author for providing me with an ARC for an honest review!

A Peter Pan retelling, with everyone as villains, and a kind of Labyrinth-esque vibe, and a dash of Beauty and the Beats? Say less, I'm absolutely sold.

"That's the thing about stories, they change every time they're told"

Jolie Hook, the daughter of the infamous, ruthless, and feared Captain Hook himself, has spent her life, facing tests of her resolve, tenacity, reflexes skills and leadership to prove herself and her ability to take over captaining the Jolly Roger. Captain Hook has become weary with age and battles, and just wants to retire peacefully, knowing that his beloved ship is in the hands of a capable and strong leader. So when Peter Pan agrees to meet, Hook doesn't hesitate to meet him and finally but this age old feud to bed, much to Jolie's dismay and caution. Knowing how wicked, the trickster Pan is, Jolie follows her father into the NeverWoods, unbeknownst to him, with fear of losing him the way she lost her mother, clouding her judgement. When she comes face to face with Pan himself, after his kidnapping of her father, pain and vengeance fuel her to navigate through the daunting NeverWoods, to save her father, avenger her mother's death, and finally take down the all consuming, riddle spinning, demon, Peter Pan for good.

I can't tell you how incredible this was. Jolie Hook is tenacious, cunning and fierce, a protagonist to be reckoned with. She stands up for herself and isn't afraid of confrontation, and cares deeply about those she loves. She's determined to prove herself as worthy of captaining her father's ship, in spite of the consistent, and impulsive tests. Jolie has indomitable spirit, and keeps her resolve in every challenge she faces. It was so captivating and entertaining navigating the Never Woods and Pans' consistent tricks alongside Jolie, I honestly forgot I was reading it was so enthralling. Jolie has to confront many internal challenges as well as physical, as the pieces of her life slowly begin to click into place, and everything she's had ingrained and embedded into her very being is disputed, watching her come to terms with this information, and trying to deal with such intense, and conflicting feelings towards her father, and this boy she's always seen as inherently evil was really profound and just made you love her even more.

Peter Pan was so much fun as the villain, he definitely gives off Once Upon A Time Peter Pan vibes, and I'm not mad about it. He was mischievous, charismatic, cocky and terrifying at times, with his dark magic, and his enthusiasm for playing games with anyone unlucky enough to stumble into his woods. He finds amusement in fear, and potential pain of those who become unwilling components of his game, but he is literally so much fun, you can't help but love him. Who doesn't love a cocky villain, with depth, complexity and more to them that meets the eye?

Also let's just take a moment for this quote, because..
"If you want me to bleed so badly for you, all you have to do is ask"

I can't get over this book, and how fully immersive it is, you feel immediately transported to Neverland. It's written so well, it draws you in, and refuses to let you go (with short chapters!). The tension between Peter and Jolie is palpable, and so so intense, that at times it's giddying. My only thing is that I would've maybe liked a bit more adventure with Jolie getting to the castle, and more of Peter's illusions and tricks, because when they appeared I was utterly enthralled, and was so excited for what he had in store for her next. Once we got to the castle it lost a little of my captivation, but there were still some really exciting, and gripping moments to keep me reading. The ending, oh that had me in a chokehold, it was so wholesome and affirming, and the battle had me absolutely on the edge of my seat, so prepare yourself for it, because it's a good one.

Overall, it's a beautifully written escape, full of intrigue, magic, betrayals, love, and adventure. It's utterly enchanting, you'll definitely finish this and want more from these charming and unique characters.

rarely ever like books in third person anymore but this one somehow got a solid 4.5/5 stars! The Legacy of Villains I my favorite Peter Pan retelling so far. I love how the chapters are quick, clear and concise and keep ending on mini cliffhangers. And I loved how a lot of the vibe was like a mix of Alice and Wonderland.

Jo is Captain Hook’s daughter (who will eventually take his place) but in the beginning she’s in disagreement with him to do Peter Pan’s peace treaty because she thinks it’s a trap.

Now that Captain Hook has been captured by Pan, Jo makes a deal. She has 3 days to make it to Pan’s castle to free her father or Pan gets to imprison Jo too.

Here are my thoughts and notes while reading:

Chapter 14 throws us into a new PoV (Peter Pan’s) without warning… sidenote- this happens a few times later too which I didn’t expect or enjoy.

I learned a new word: Ennui- a feeling of listlessness and dissatisfaction arising from a lack of occupation or excitement.

At page 100 I love Jo’s spirit. Is there a purpose of putting her through this strange game? What has Captain Hook done that Jo isn’t aware of. What other kinds of magic does the Neverwoods hold?

I like the clever games inside the woods and the challenges she has to go through but Peter just seems unnecessarily cruel

The clock scene in chapter 29 was awesome.

At the halfway mark I’m wondering if every version of Peter Pan story has to make him cruel.

The cards game scene with Wendy is refreshingly creative and I’m all for it.

Chapter 38 was excellent!

And so was chapter 45!

A few little details of the climatic scene were a little fuzzy to me but I still loved it.

The end hints on a continued series?

Here is the blurb:

Peter Pan meets Beauty and the Beast in this darkly enchanting enemies to lovers retelling.

Jolie Hook knew better than to make a deal with the shadowy and charismatic Peter Pan. Not only had he been her father's mortal enemy since the days of the Merfolk War, but he'd also had a hand in her mother's brutal murder ten years ago.

So when Pan lures her father to a peace-treaty meeting only to kidnap him instead, Jo has to fight back her violent urges in order to strike a bargain with her foe: if she makes it to his castle within three days, he will let her father go.

All that stands in her way is the Neverwoods, the ancient forest teeming with Peter's beautifully dark magic. As he sends illusions and nightmarish games meant to torment her into defeat, Jolie begins to unravel the mysteries of Peter Pan, including the secrets behind his dangerous shadow magic and his obsession with trapping her in his realm forever.

Battling an otherworldly girl from Peter’s past, the vicious truths of the Hook legacy, and her own treacherous attraction to the enemy, Jo races against the clock to save her father and secure themselves as the winners of Neverland’s fiercest unending war.

........... 3.5/5 ...........
THE STORY - If there is one thing everyone knows on Neverland, it’s to never make a deal with Peter Pan. He might look charming, but he’s definitely evil. Jolie Hook knows that, so when her father goes to meet Pan in the Neverwoods for a peace-treaty and suddenly disappears, she is not surprised at all. She knows who is to blame and the only way to get to her father is the only thing she’s sure she shouldn’t do, make a bargain with the one responsible for her father's disappearance... Pan. The path leading to her father is full of secrets, magic, dangers and worst of all, Peter Pan seems to always be close by...

MY REVIEW - This story was definitely entertaining and I enjoyed reading it a lot! I feel like you can’t go wrong with Neverland, Peter Pan and all of that! I was a big fan of Peter as soon as he appeared and I was so glad whenever we got a chapter from his POV (which was kinda rare though). The main plot of the story was nice and I didn’t feel like there was a dull moment. The little chapter openers always made me smile, I love stuff like that, it’s such a nice recurrent thing to put in and make the read even more unique.

With that being said though, I have to admit that as much as I enjoyed my read, I wasn’t that invested in it. I don’t know if I’ve seen/read too many Peter Pan retellings but nothing left me in awe. I had a really hard time connecting with Jolie, did not dislike her but she left me very indifferent, which always makes it hard to enjoy a book a hundred percent in situations like this, especially since she was the main POV of the story.

And last thing... the hype for this book was crazy with the tour I'm in and I feel like it affected my liking of it. When a book is sooooo hyped, I tend to go in with the most unachievable expectations so I’m really sorry about that. I feel like I’m the unpopular opinion here and really it’s a me problem so, don’t let that stop you from reading this book, like I said, very entertaining, great debut and nice pick honestly!

Thanks to the author & BookOfMatchesMedia for the eARC. All opinions are my own.

This book was uniquely satisfying and I loved every minute of reading it! I'm going to do my best to articulate what I loved about it (without spoilers, of course!), though it's hard to put into words exactly what made this book so wonderful.

The initial premise of the book is a Peter-Pan inspired twisted fairy tale. This was what initially interested me -- I'm always down for a good fairy tale retelling. Lockwood strikes an excellent balance of familiar and new. Just enough elements of the original Peter Pan tale and Neverland are included to give the story a comfortably familiar feel; there are familiar characters such as Captain Hook, Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, and the lost boys, and familiar settings like the Jolly Roger. Within the familiar framework we have a brand new main character in Jolie Hook (Captain Hook's daughter) as well as additional background on the characters that makes each more three dimensional than they are in the original tale. Lockwood makes all of the characters feel more real and relatable by blurring the clear cut lines between good and evil and presenting the characters as more relatably gray individuals who have both good and bad qualities in varying measures. These new elements with the characters absolutely make the story. I was quickly pulled in and so curious to see how all the character relationships panned out in the end because there was such an overarching humanity to the main characters. Lockwood focuses in deeply on just a few of the characters; this allows us to really get to know these few without bogging the story down.

The plot was unique as well -- from the beginning, there's this idea of pursing peace in Neverland and of the presumed impossibility of it. I can't say much without being spoiler-y, but I loved the pacing of the plot and the way that it didn't quite follow all of the usual patterns. It felt just a bit unpredictable, much like Neverland is always meant to feel.

The ending of the book was satisying while also leaving the option for a series. Either way, I'll be searching out subsequent books by Juliet Lockwood. She crafted a refreshingly different type of retelling and I loved it!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thanks Booksirens and Juliet Lockwood!
