12-year-old Daniel Scott has a powerful secret - he can run fast, superhumanly fast. When his speed wins him a place as the youngest player in history on the New Zealand Warriors rugby league team, it is a dream come true. But as the game of the season looms, Daniel has bigger problems to worry about.
One of my all time favourite NZ junior fiction books. A story where a child lives out their dreams with elements of a super hero story, but grounded in a realistic setting. The character descriptions were spot on and believable - what kid doesn't want to be a sporting hero, but what happens when you dreams com true?
I decided to read this book because my brother gave it to me a few years ago and said it was a good read. Henry and the flea fits the 'written by a NZer' on my Bingo board. My favorite quote from this book was 'i want to be a warrior' which is said by the main character Daniel. I like this quote because he has big hopes and dreams and he does accomplish them eventually. something i learnt from this book was that any dream is possible as long as you work hard and put in enough effort. Daniel was interesting to me because he is a 12 year old boy who wants to play for the warriors and somehow he did it.
Brian Falkner came to my school for readers and writers week and he was a really cool guy. It was only after he came that I realized that he was the Auther of Henry and the flea. A book I read and loved when I was only ten.
Great read for middle school boys who love football. Frankly, the brief descriptions of footie moves is out of my league...but this is a wise, funny, relevant read.
i really enjoyed reading this when it was first released. I am reading it with my 9 year old sone, so am interested to see hi reaction. He was already pretty hooked by the end of chapter 1.
