Lindsay Tanner explains his theory of politiics, related to the central idea that relationships should form the basis of decisions made by governments. Writes chapters on different topics, from boys in education to the custody system, a new national flag or anthem. At time the links between his different topics seem tenuous, and I think his main points could have been covered in an essay rather than a book. Much also seemed to be either specific personal experiences or from general research, I felt that there were very few striking or original points made. Still, it's nice to have people of thought and vision in our government!
It is always such a relief to me to come upon a politician who has managed to retain a connection to humanity and real life. I shall be seeking out more of Lindsay Tanners' writings and also following him more on the current political stage.
Written in 2003, pre GFC, there very early part of the book I found not quite as relevant, but the book touches on so many aspects of our over busy modern lives and the struggle to maintain and redefine our relationships.
I would suggest that anyone reading this book turn immediately to the conclusion, read that and then go back to the start.
