About the author

Reverend Doctor George Campbell Morgan D.D. was a British evangelist, preacher and a leading Bible scholar. A contemporary of Rodney "Gipsy" Smith, Morgan preached his first sermon at age 13. He was the pastor of Westminster Chapel in London from 1904 to 1919, and from 1933 to 1943, pausing briefly between to work at Biola in Los Angeles, which he eventually handed over to Martyn Lloyd Jones.

Morgan was a prolific author, writing over 60 works in his lifetime, not counting the publishing of some of his sermons as booklets and pamphlets. In addition to composing extensive biblical commentaries, and writing on myriad topics related to the Christian life and ministry, his essay entitled "The Purposes of the Incarnation" is included in a famous and historic collection called The Fundamentals—a set of 90 essays edited by the famous R. A. Torrey, who himself was successor to D. L. Moody both as an evangelist and pastor—which is widely considered to be the foundation of the modern Christian Fundamentalist movement.

Morgan has quickly become a favorite. Tucked behind the towering pillars of the major prophets sits the book of Hosea. Morgan draws it out of the shadows brilliantly.

This is a beautifully written commentary on Hosea. There is a lot of depth, yet the book isn’t very long. Morgan’s writing style is enjoyable as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a deeper look at the book of Hosea, but more importantly, God’s heart towards His children.

G. Campbell Morgan is able to paint such a beautiful picture of God because he learns the brushstrokes from the Bible itself. In this book he will stretch your heart and stretch your theology as you see the suffering heart of God, longing to see his redeemed people walking in holiness, walking with him. But as always he exposits the Word with reverence and simplicity.

The first couple of sermons deal with Hosea's suffering as prophet. There are many in the middle dealing with the defection of the people and its causes and course. The last few sermons were in my opinion the best as he talks about the love of God for his people, how he cannot give them up to a life without Him, but sent His missionary Son to pursue His straying lover, His prodigal son--His people.
