To commemorate the tragic events involving Atom Eve in recent issues of Invincible, Image is reprinting her acclaimed solo series for the first time ever. See Eve's beginnings as she gains her powers and trains herself to be the hero we all knew and loved. Collects Invincible: Presents Atom Eve #1-2.
I just find this in bad taste, but I'm not sure why. I guess I don't like seeing a character being traumatized to make them appear "deeper" when her character was just fine in the main run. Not to mention the tonal whiplash this is. The tone and pacing are all wrong and I'm not comfortable with some of the things that happened here...would not recommend, it's really bad.
Gross, truly gross. This book is just a barrage of pointless trauma for a young girl who deserves none of it. The worst part of it was when they showed what they'd done to her mother, absolutely dehumanised this random woman who's never been seen before and will never be seen again. It feels like a sort of misogynistic sadism the length this book goes to torture eve and her mother
Atom Eve is some sort of cute femme that it is clearly written by males 20 years ago. There is intention in here to make it more dimensional, but it still falls into the traditional tropes for female supes that are just too skittish and shown.
Samantha Eve Wilkins is the atom-altering superhero known as Atom Eve. This book gives readers a greater depth on her origins and the situations and complications surrounding that as well as repercussions that happen before the regular Invincible series.
The first part of the book is really just a recap of what we've learned previously in Invincible. Its the second part of the story that really gives us new material and new information about what ele happened based on Eve's origin. We do get to learn a lot more about her family - in every sense of the word. Nothing is really as Eve thinks it is, and just when she thinks she understands it, even more twists are thrown at her.
I was actually very interested in the new material about this character and it was nice to see how it all fits together. The early parts of the story were a lot of rehashed material, not to mention a bit disjointed and jumpy through her early life. The characterization seemed off to a big degree, making Eve kind of snotty and brusque, which I didn't enjoy or find that funny. I've really gotten to know the character over years of the regular series, and she was out of character quite a bit.
I can't say I was very fond of the art in this story either. It was very blocky and jagged - not at all flattering for Eve or any of the Invincible universe. I guess I've been spoiled by the great art in the main book that this one just came up short for me.
This is a book for serious Invincible fans only. A die-hard or completist would enjoy the extra bits provided in this book, but a more casual reader won't miss anything here and still enjoy the main series.
I read this as part of a full rereading of Invincible, and I regret it. It's certainly not The Worst Comic Book Ever Written, but it so pales in comparison with the main series that it seems nigh-unreadable when it's actually just uninspiring and bland. While Invincible takes superhero tropes and subverts them or exploits them to creative ends, this is the kind of satire where they just hit every beat of a superhero origin story and thrown in a few jokes. And some of the jokes land. And some of them hover in the air a few feet in front of your glaring eyes before shame causes them to blink out of existence.
"All I want is someone who can blow things up with mind bullets when I ask. Is that so much? Donald?" What should have been a great origin story was so poorly executed. It needed far more than 2 issues, and the art sucked. The actual story was great a sad but it was rushed, and has Eve had a personality transplant, or did the events of this TPB change her?...2 🌟
An interesting look at Eve's origin that unfortunately makes her feel a little 2 dimensional, I think this could have been rectified if the first part took more time to explore her life as she grew similarly to the Atom-Eve special that was adapted from this story but then it doesn't feel fair to compare this to a retelling that was told almost 20 years later.
