An encounter with the paranormal can change a personâ s life forever. Duncan Barford was one of poltergeists, conversations with the dead, spirits of nature and of place, mystical states, lucid dreams and out-of-body experiences.
In this book he explores the significance of experiences like these for our understanding of reality, and of how his engagement with the theories and practices of western magick has developed his views.
Pompous musings and ridiculous theory stuff this book. I was hoping the author would describe his experiences more. That's in here too. But mostly it's theorizing on psychogeography and how maybe water underground causes ghosts. The theorizing is so earnest and simultaneously desperate and dumb that I found myself groaning in pain.
I learned in therapy that explaining and justifying is a pointless activity. Sometimes things happen or you want to do something. Do it. Don't explain it beyond what you need for yourself.
I did not finish this book because it's just too painful and dumb. Alas, it was recommended to me as a good example of someone who is doing magick describing his magick. There is very little of that.
I bought this wanting to learn more about Magick, but it has turned out to be one of my favourite PHILOSOPHY books of all time. It's short, but full of profundity.
Somewhat belying its title, ‘Occult Experiments in the Home’ ventures onto the streets as much as restricting itself to within four walls, and provides a very thoughtful, intelligent and engaging observation on many aspects of super-sensory phenomena. The book will appeal to readers whose interest lies in spirituality and mysticism, as well as those with a specific interest in the paranormal. Drawing on many personal experiences alongside up-to-date research, and taking the perspective of an open-minded but deeply grounded investigator, Barford stimulates food for thought on a wide range of topics. His engaging writing style and well rationalized discussion should appeal to both novices to the subject and those who are more familiar with it. This is a wonderful book that deserves to be read by a wide audience.
