A dreaded holiday wedding, Christmas duets, and dating the off-limits crush.
Chelsea Sutherland is a wreck this Christmas. Not only is she reeling from the world’s cruelest breakup, now her ex-boyfriend is marrying her meanest cousin. At Chelsea’s childhood home. And there’s no way Chelsea can skip it. No matter how deep she buries herself into the number-crunching at work, this wedding will not go away.
Wyatt North has been handed a career-making opportunity. If he gets it right, he’ll be able to steer his banking firm toward its roots of helping the local community again. If not, he’s a blot on the family name—which he already jeopardizes by spending all his time with the Sutherland family, singing with Chelsea and her brother in Christmas Tree-O.
When Wyatt learns of Chelsea’s dreaded wedding problem, the solution is clear—take Wyatt as her significant other. Since the trio has become a duet, long-suppressed feelings between them are heating up. But a romance could endanger the friendship and their singing group’s dynamic—not to mention risk both families’ disapproval.
I love a story that ends with a kiss, whether it's a book or a movie. That's the big payoff! So that's the kind of books I like to write, and I call my style "cotton candy for the soul"-- light, sweet, gone. We all need a little escape from reality for a while, and escapist fiction can be the perfect remedy.
I'm a moderately bad housekeeper, I have a black thumb, and it takes a small miracle to get my hair to curl. My handsome husband and I live in the Arizona desert where we're raising our five children, who never let us stop laughing.
Griffith never fails to deliver a charmingly sweet romantic comedy that's heavy on the swoon and considerably funny. Add to that, a delightful story of a brother's best friend turned fake fiance during the Christmas season, and it's tastier than a decadent holiday treat.
Chelsea and Wyatt are part of a singing group, along with Chelsea's brother, and a tricky family wedding situation lands them smack in the middle of an unlikely, yet believable, fake relationship. As that's one of my favorite tropes, I was in heaven! I adored how playboy Wyatt and math-whiz Chelsea interacted. Their scrabbles games, flirting, and spot-on duets were worthy of a Hallmark movie.
The setting of this new series is adorable. With a tight-knit family and all things Christmas, the small town allure made me want to pack up my bags and move.
Content: mild romance (cheating, kissing)

In Sugar Plum Falls, you'll find all those feel-good, warm and fuzzy feelings that are perfect for this time of year.
Two best friends finally pull their heads out of the snow and admit they're much more to each other. And all the characters will join in keeping you entertained with family dynamics, angst and heartbreak, but overruled by forgiveness and love.
And the Christmas Tree-O (love that name!) will sing fa-la-la-la-la -- la-la-la-la from start to finish!
4.5* I can always count on having many good laughs and sweet romance when I read a book by Jennifer Griffith. This was such a fun story.
I loved all the different aspects included in it. Brother's best friend forbidden love, family, fake engagements, family rivals, music (lots of fun music), Christmas time, misconceptions, and much, much more.
Chelsea and Wyatt have been friends for a long time and with Chelsea's brother they are a singing trio called Christmas Tree-O. How cute is that group name? I thought it was adorable and clever. They have been singing Christmas songs together for many years now. But this year, there's a slight hiccup. Chelsea's brother can't be there at several of the rehearsals and performances. And that in turn leaves Chelsea and Wyatt alone. They've always kept away from each other because of her brother's demands, but this year those sparks they've shied away from are bursting and growing. Add to that a mistaken engagement and bam! These two are in for the Christmas adventure of their life! ;-)
The music references were great! I loved them. Especially the one liners from Christmas songs that Chelsea would think or say out loud and how they fit in perfectly with the moment. I giggled over many of them. Can you figure out what songs they come from?
These two have to figure out some family issues and personal issues as they are going through this Christmas season. Some bring up painful memories but it was good to watch them work through their past hurts and insecurities with each other.
Content: Clean. Some very mild innuendos from a secondary character but nothing graphic. Sweet kisses.
I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
Christmas At Holly Berry Cottage by Jennifer Griffith is the first book in a clean/Plain Jane/vanilla romance series called Sugarplum Falls. This is the first book I have read by Ms. Griffith, but it won't be the last. Apparently, while it is called a series, each book is about different characters who live in the same community and know each other.
As the title states, the romance story takes place during the Christmas season. Its main tropes are friends to lovers and fake dating. Central to the tropes is the theme of crossroads/new beginnings/second chance at love/forgiveness.
The romance is very innocent. The couple, who are now in their late twenties and early thirties, have been friends since they were children. Deep down romantic thoughts and dreams have been at play, but have never been acted upon.
I enjoyed the story for many reasons. Two generations of the two families must decide if the present is more important than the past. Characters must decide whether to let go of toxic feelings/emotions/thoughts and embrace new possibilities and opportunities. Forgiveness is key to happiness and fulfillment of dreams. Low self esteem and self worth are central to the conflict between characters.
A competitive cousin marrying her ex brings Chelsea Sutherland close to panicking. She's definitely looking to hire a date for that wedding! But miracles do happen, and long time singing partner (and crush) Wyatt North steps in to help her out. Only in spite of his mom's displeasure, he realizes he is living his fantasy. But hold your breath, because nothing is ever easy even when love is in the air. In a city called Sugarplum Falls, at a home called Holly Berry House, Christmas and family are BIG deals! This sweet and wonderful Christmas story is full of interesting characters, details about events and locations, Christmas music, and friendship that is much much more. It is a beautiful book to read to get you excited about the holiday season, and exactly what I needed this difficult year. A Christmas treasure.
Chelsea Sutherland is in a bit of a bind. Her awful cousin, Esther, is engage to Fargo Frye, the jerk who used her and broke her heart. Because Sutherlands support one another, her mother is hosting the wedding, and Chelsea can't escape the drama this Christmas. Enter Wyatt North, Chelsea's brother's best friend, and the third member of their singing group, Christmas Tree-0. He offers to be Chelsea's date to the wedding and family gatherings, but one date quickly spirals into a fake engagement. Chelsea's brother will kill them both, their music may suffer, but what harm is a kiss or two along the way? This book was adorable! Full of Christmas traditions, family gatherings, family drama, sweet kisses, and final showdowns. This book will have you laughing out loud, and decking your halls.
Content: clean (some kissing, no language, mild violence)
Christmas Tree-O? Or Duet? This is absolutely the best kind of story at Christmas time! A long time best friends turned to love and marriage. Although the angst filled couple who were in love way before they each admitted it to themselves let alone each other occupied most of the story, it was fun reading about the side characters antics and the family dynamics. I also loved reading about the Christmas Tree-O trio and especially the duet singing. It sounded so romantic. Not to mention those sizzling kisses! Even though you can’t see the beaming smile on my face, it is there in living color. And will return whenever I think back on this book.
Pros: It’s clean and glorifies family and forgiveness. Cons: Those story is so sickly sweet that it hurts your teeth. But not in a good way. It defies logic and so out of touch with life that I had a hard time even pretending to enjoy the story line. Rushed is a good description of the time line. It reads like a high school literature assignment that someone put off until the night before it was due.
Christmas at Holly Berry Cottage (Sugarplum Falls Romances Book 1) by Jennifer Griffith is a sweet romance with small-town setting. There are grudges, heartbreaks, over from afar, new life, forgiveness, and love found close-up. I enjoyed this story from beginning to end. I like how people can change for the better and relationships mended. Of course, like life sometimes jerks stay jerks too.
Chelsea Sutherland has a hard time forgiving herself though it comes across as if her heart has been broken. No one likes to be played as a fool but Chelsea has trouble accepting it and moving on with her life. Thank goodness for friend Wyatt North. He is not without his own problems. Together they can work it all out during the Christmas Season. The worst Christmas ever can turn out to be the absolute best Christmas. If we ever need that hope this is the year. An entertaining story that inspires us to remember that thought.
In times where we must practice social distancing with big families gathering are too be avoided, I so enjoyed going along with the fictional Sutherlands with all their commotion. What a family! Life has always been complicated but it was a relief to leave the real world for a while with Christmas at Holly Berry Cottage. I love the conclusion!
The publisher/author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I loved this one by Jennifer Griffith. It’s got everything romance, great characters, a really fun plot, Christmas music. And I loved the setting.
Chelsea is a fun character. She’s a math and computer whiz that everyone uses, whenever they need to. But she’s been left feeling jaded by the way she was used by a certain young man. Unfortunately, he shows up, and he’s marrying her ex-best friend cousin. That’s when Wyatt steps in.
Wyatt, Chelsea and Chelsea’s brother Heath sing in a group called Christmas Tree-O. I loved this aspect of the book. Christmas Tree-O is booked to perform at many events in their town. And also, the wedding I mentioned before.
Wyatt and Chelsea have amazing chemistry. And Heath is kind of MIA because he’s about to become a dad. What’s a group to do, but go from a trio to a duo. I loved how these two worked together on and off the stage. But things are not perfect, there’s problems with their families and just life. They must learn to work things out before it’s too late.
This is such a fun book! I can’t wait to read the second one.
I was sent a copy of Christmas at Holly Berry Cottage as a gift from the author. All opinions are my own.
The Christmas Tree-O trio are getting ready to sing during all their small town’s holiday happenings. But this year there are problems. Heat, Chelsea’s brother is married and his wife’s first baby is due any time, so he keeps missing practices. And due to other problems, Chelsea and their best friend, Wyatt, are pretending to be a couple. There are family dynamics, old romances, and jobs to deal with. This book is not steamy, but rather full of normal circumstances of everyday life in a small tow. The holidays can be, and are in this story, difficult. But also there is happiness and good things going on. The book is worth the read and we don’t get too bogged down with couple love.
Jennifer Griffith wrote a sweet and totally Christmasy story in “Christmas at Holly Berry Cottage”. Located in Sugarplum Falls, I could definitely see myself in this town and living in Holly Berry Cottage. Chelsea Sutherland and Wyatt North had been together for years due to being a part of a singing trio with her brother, Heath, called “Christmas Tree-O…cute and inventive name. But the relationship begins to change when Heath is unable to be a part of the trio on several occasions. Toss in an old boyfriend that had hurt Chelsea and a wedding that no one wanted to attend, and the story really gets interesting! I liked the story and recommend it to those who like sweet, clean Christmas-feeling stories.
I feel like this book had the potential to be a really great book. For me, though, it just didn't work. There were too many farfetched parts mixed with plotholes. That's the best way I can explain it without ruining the story. Along with that, the dialogue needed some work. It felt fake or forced at times.
I did really like the idea of this book. It's got so many literary stereotypes. You've got the friends to lovers storyline, the fake dating to real dating story, dating your best friend's younger sister, small town romance, and reformed flirt stories. I was actually excited to see these at play.
This was a clean novel. There's no swearing or violence. There are a few mild innuendos, but they are PG at worst.
I love fake relationship stories and this one was fun. Old friends singing together, an overprotective brother, a nasty ex, a scarred heart, a mean-girl cousin, ice queen mom, unspoken crushes, huge family of busy bodies = lots going on in this story. Enjoyable, quick read. Loved both flawed main characters. Lots of room for growth in themselves and their relationship. And I enjoyed the secondary characters as well.
Enjoyable read and perfect length for an evening by the fire.
Sex: leering, sexual assault Language: no Violence: sexual assault *I received a complimentary ARC of this book and voluntarily choose to review it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story, it is full of all the essential elements for a great drama.. What a wonderful array of characters who display the spectrum of human emotions, from the insecure Chelsea, devastated by boyfriend, the leering Fargo Frye to Heath, the overprotective brother, and Wyatt, the successful banker's son who is not good at math, but does have a way with women. The powerhouse, Dulrissa, Wyatt's mother who wants him to marry well... and Esther, Chelsea's mean cousin. I love the way Jennifer Griffith weaves the plot and brings out the underlying potential in her characters. A fabulous Christmas read.
I absolutely loved this book!!!! I don't who I liked more Chelsea or Wyatt. They are friends that long for more but the other has no idea. The cousin marrying Chelsea's ex irritated me and I was to be honest afraid I wouldn't like this book. Happy to say I loved how the author handled this situation. So they fake a relationship which helps but also seems to cause problems. Side storylines of family issues adds so much to their romance. Loved how forgiving she is and how crazy he is about her. LOVED IT!!!! The best ending ever.
Chelsea and Wyatt have known each other all their lives, they sing in the town trio. Both have liked each other for years but Chelsea's older brother Heath kept them apart until he isn't around with being married, becoming a father and work obligations. Chelsea get a wedding invite to her cousins wedding to her ex boyfriend. Wyatt offers to be her boyfriend but ups the anti when the first time they see the couple that they are engaged. Truly funny, sweet romance with some mis understandings. Great Characters!
Christmas at Holly Berry Cottage by Jennifer Griffith (5 stars)
A Christmas romance that has all the family craziness of a large and loving family mixed with the healing power of finally hashing out hurtful things and forgiving and being forgiven.
Jennifer Griffith has such a unique ‘voice’! It’s quirky and fun, but can take on the serious issues of life, as well.
This was a delightful Christmas read!
*poor, **ok, ***good, ****very good, *****something special
What a fun Christmas romance. I had a hard time falling for Chelsea, but once I did the story flowed more smoothly for me. Wyatt was a fun character to get to know also. The forbidden romance really pulled everything together, and the unknown family animosity was the icing on the cake. This will be a delight to anyone who picks it up. And, there was a moment when I thought, "There's a story behind this other minor character." It will be fun to see if I'm correct.
Chelsea is going to be singing at her cousins and ex-boyfriend engagement party and wedding. No one in her family knows how badly she had been treated by him. Wyatt decides that he should help Chelsea by pretending to be her boyfriend and go to tje parties with her. Well written story with strong and believable characters. Looking forward to the next book in this series. joy943
What a great story for the holidays. Griffith has a fun sense of humor in all her books, and this one was no different. I did have BIG issues with Chelsea's mother's absolute insensitivity. Family or now. You don't set up a daughter to possible hurt for a cousin. Sorry. Sadly, there are people like that in real life, so while it made me nuts, it also felt real. And Wyatt was freaking adorable. Chelsea's brother Heath I wanted to smack silly. What a selfish jerk.
Honestly, the characters spent most of the time feeling passion for each other. The reader understands that they have known each other for a long time but I would rather there was more development so the reader could be apart of their story not apart for their sexual interest in each other. "Clean story" but hinges on almost not being clean. Sad really the author could obviously do better.
Chelsea suffers from depression after a breakup with a terrible man. Then the man shows up as her estranged cousin’s fiancé. To the rescue, a member of the music trio Chelsea and her brother sing in for Christmas events. Lots of family dynamics and misunderstandings complicate the story set in Sugarplum Falls, the quintessential Christmas celebration town. The story is enjoyable. I received the book for signing up for the author’s newsletter.
This was a sweet, cozy holiday romance read. I love everything this book. I couldn’t help but fall in love with Wyatt and Chelsea’s relationship going from friends to husband and wife. It took them awhile to get to this point due to Chelsea’s big brother and Wyatt’s mom forbidding Wyatt and Chelsea getting closer and becoming a couple. I can’t wait to read more of the books that are written by this, Jennifer Griffith.
Christmas at Holly Berry Cottage is a sweet, heartwarming, friends to lovers romance. The large, loud, Sutherland family is endearing. Chelsea and Wyatt are my new favorite couple. They definitely bring out the best in each other. Chelsea is much more than and and Wyatt isn't nearly the callous playboy he is thought to be. I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend this sweet Christmas romance.
An enjoyable best friends to love with an interfering brother, a vindictive ex and their fiance and an unhappy mom. A pretend engagement which seems not so pretend and a lot of things trying to keep them apart this relationship seems doomed. But love rears its beautiful head and that is enough to deal with all the mishaps and maybe a Christmas wedding will happen.
