Ryohgo Narita (成田 良悟, Narita Ryōgo) is a Japanese light novelist. He won the Gold Prize in the 9th Dengeki Novel Prize for Baccano!, which was made into a TV anime in 2007.[1] His series Durarara!! was also made into a TV anime, which began airing January 2010

There are two traits found in most of Narita's works:
* Narita writes extremely fast, one volume a month if he wishes - with tons of spelling errors and missing words as a tradeoff. The editors like to leave them sometimes just for fun, though.
* His work titles often have an exclamation mark at the end (i.e. Baccano!, Vamp!, Durarara!!, etc.).

Kanji names:

A clockmaker owed a lot of money to several mafia organizations. Instead of selling his shop to cover the debt, he wanted to sell his two sons instead. Tick Jefferson was the oldest son. Since he liked to play with scissors as a child, the Gandor family decided to train him and make him their torture specialist. Tock Jefferson was the youngest son. Tock was very smart and when he realized his father wanted to sell him to the mafia, he ran. And he ran straight into the arms of notorious terrorist Huey Laforet.

Eight years later, a small gang of delinquent youths led by the cowardly Jacuzzi Splot is doing business on the Gandor family’s territory. The Gandor family decides to send their torture specialist Tick Jefferson to them, to tell them to back off as nicely as possible. Just to be safe, the katana-swinging Maria is sent along with him as his bodyguard.

Eve Genoard has spent years trying to find her brother Dallas. She’s paid a lot of money to break him free from his prison at the bottom of the Hudson river. But she ends up getting there a little bit too late. Dallas has been taken by Larva, Huey Laforet’s terrorist cult. And they want Dallas to do a little job for them.

Chané Laforet, the daughter of the notorious terrorist Huey Laforet, is living with Jacuzzi Splot’s gang. When the gang suddenly comes under attack by several criminal organizations, she doesn’t have a clue what’s going on. But she can’t help but stand with her new friends and fight.

I really like the setting because it’s so important to the plot. It’s the end of the prohibition era, and the criminal organizations who mostly made a living through speakeasies are now panicking. They’re trying to find alternative sources of income. That’s why they start to target the small criminals, like the delinquent youths who were making a small amount of money on their turf. To claim that money for themselves.

What makes Baccano so special is simply that the plot always makes many interesting characters cross paths with each other. And this story is not the exception. It’s mostly setting things up for the next novel, as this book really is more about introducing all the characters and just showcasing how cool Ronny is. But I have to admit, there’s some really great moments to be found here, as it’s quite an action-packed story. And the comic relief duo of Isaac and Miria is just the icing on the cake.

Okay, now I need to read the next volume. Immediately.

Because that's what bothers me the most here: it leaves you hanging on so many points.

Aside from that, it's still the same brilliant nonsense as ever, especially whenever Isaac and Miria are involved. We also meet some new characters, some interesting, some quite less so. Dallas is still an ass, but I appreciate how he cares about his sister. Makes me hate him just a little less.

Anyways, see you on the next volume very soon!

Not enough Vinooooooooo! That's the only reason I give 3 stars instead of 4, but overall it's better than the previous volume. There are Isaac and Miria and their antics (which I always love), more about Ronnie and Tick. I'm looking forward for Vino's action in the next volume!

Dwa ostatnie tomy to zwyczajne opowieści okraszone mnóstwem gadanin i jakiśtam walk.

The time difference between that one and volume 4 is kind of big and I think there happened a lot of between January 1932 and Summer/Autumn 1933... like now Claire refers to Chané as his fianceé but I really want to know how exactly they got closer to each other and why is Chané still living with Jacuzzis group instead of marrying Claire and moving together with him? How on earth prefers Chané Jacuzzis group over sharing her bed with that adorable and dramatic assassin?
I was happy that I got more of Maria and Tick, they are such a cute couple. These Larvae group is kind of confusing... they are working for Huey LaForet (why is he even able to exchange information with the outside world?) but Chané doesn't know them... why did Huey never tell Chané that he also has other "people" working for him? At least Ennis isn't the only homunculus anymore, haha, I just hope Adele didn't commit a terrible mistake with attacking Chané ... because her assassin-lover seemed Pissed at the end and I capitalized that on purpose because damn gurl!

I don't really like Maria or Tick as main protagonists. They are 2 weirdos that imho aren't strong enough to stand as MCs. The author decided to give them center stage nevertheless.
I did like the returning cast and, like the weather, the plot gets darker as we go through the volume. There are some hints to some serious conflicts in the next volume.

I don't like to review part 1s. I end up reviewing them based on how hyped for the next volume they leave me...

There's usually a weak link in the cast of characters that makes certain parts of the volume a slog to get through. But everyone was strong this time around! Even if it's setup to the next volume, it was a solid cast to follow through. I didn't think Tick of all people would make for such an interesting focus.

So Vino found Chane sometime between books, but if that's the case why aren't they married? Why are they apart at all? And why not write the scene when they find each other? I'm just a bit let down.

It’s been a long time since I watched this anime, but the novels are great. I think they make the convoluted plot a bit easier to understand.

One-half of a whole, this is a lot of setup for things to come. Plenty of immortals running around!

An entanglement of several threads into one, glad the story is returning to the ruckus, the Baccano formula. Characters, both old and new, are amazing as usual.

i think out of all the baccano! volumes this one is most obviously only half of the story, but that's okay because i inhale this shit. great to see what jacuzzi and his gang are up to, and i fucking love isaac and miria.

This one had me on the edge, it is the second book that was not depicted in the anime, where you learn the fate of Dallas Genoard, new lovable characters and developement fot Tick, who we only saw in one scene but was intriguing as hell, then there is this Mexican-katana weilding-assassin who is just so cute and naive, but is not immortal like the leading mafia and camorrista, but has this drive and HOW THE FUCK A NORTHERN MEXICAN WITH A MARIACHI SUIT GETS HER KATANAS JUST AFTER THE MEXICAN REVOLUTION!! that's what I want to know, I hope in the next book there is more about her.

It may not be the first one, but if you saw the anime, or are you at least intrigued and dont want to read the other 6 books, you could begin here. Though you really only need a day per book, so...whoever reads this, know this is a good light novel.

I admit, I miss the old cast. Even though they're still there, it's obvious they are no longer the main characters in this book. No matter how I look at it, the best parts of Baccano! are the parts with Firo, Claire, the Gandor Brothers or all of them together. Now, not only are the main characters some Larvae people, but I can't even call him Claire anymore. I'm hoping that after this arc, there will be more moments with the aforementioned characters. If not, I don't see myself reading anymore Baccano! volumes.

It's good. The novel has an absolute fantastic climax, but unfortunately suffers from a lack of payoff. If this series wants to continue going on, it's going to have to kill some characters off. Having Ronnie come in is a means of ensuring no one dies in an unfair battle defeats the purpose of everything that comes before it and is sloppy plotting. It also deflates the tension out of every situation that comes before it. Major characters HAVE to die if this series is to remain interesting. Otherwise. A return to form.
