"Her purpose here is to discuss and illustrate the four types of brain waves—beta, alpha, theta, and delta—with emphasis on what they do, how they work together, and whether we can use their power."— Booklist .
Ever wonder what's happening in the mind scientifically when advanced Buddhist monks meditate vs. a Catholic priest or beginning meditator? For a fascinating exploration into brainwaves and biofeedback and how to access and train in achieving an awakened mind, read this book. Most lackeys like myself can hardly get past Beta and some Alpha. The englightened ones demonstrate lots of Theta and especially Delta waves in clinical tests... Be forewarned however: too much Theta and Delat waves can lead to feelings of expansiveness, clarity, stillness, openess, sensations of light entering and emanating from you from all areas of the body, mild episodes of blissful ecstasy. This book is not to be read by anyone with fear of too much happiness or love in their life.
The High-Performance Mind presents a fascinating and enlightening breakthrough on how to achieve the ultimate state of human efficiency, well-being, and balance through "brainwave training". Drawing from some of the latest scientific research and dozens of case histories, author Anna Wise shows us how the four kinds of brainwaves - beta, alpha, theta, and delta - communicate with one another to pass information between conscious and unconscious mind. Mastering these brainwaves through meditation and therapeutic techniques can help us heal ourselves from serious illness, enter creative states at will, become more effective leaders and problem-solvers at home and at work, and improve our interpersonal relationships. The combination of brainwaves the author defines as the "awakened mind" pattern allows us to utilize all aspects and levels of consciousness to benefit our health. By achieving this pattern at will, we can move forward into self-healing - of both physical illnesses and emotional scars. The author also explains how brainwaves play a part in nonverbal communication and seemingly inexplicable psychic knowledge. By understanding and learning to control these brainwaves, we can open the doors to a whole new means of human interaction. Even those with the busiest of schedules will find Anna Wise's techniques practical, easy, and innovative, and will be amazed at the results - a newly "awakened" mind, the first step to an ultimately high-performance life.
This book is part of a trilogy of sorts, beginning with Anna Wise's teacher, Maxwell Cade and his "Awakened Mind" book written in the late 70s, and ending with Judith Pennington, who studied under Anna Wise, and her "Your Psychic Soul", written in 2012. In my opinion, Pennington's book is better because it's more up-to-date and comprehensive, which is why I've given this one 4 stars. That said, it's an excellent book about how you can learn how to recognise and control your brainwave states to achieve your goals.
Like Pennington's book, High Performance Mind has an accompanying audio download/CD to help with meditations that help you reach an awakened mind and I found these very helpful.
A fantastic and authoritative journey into the world of brainwaves as they apply to meditation and spiritual growth. The author, a student and collaborator of C. Maxwell Cade, a pioneer in the investigation of brainwaves as they relate to levels of consciousness, gives a complete, detailed program for how to recognize one's own brain state while in it, and how to work at developing the state she calls "awakened mind," a level of peak mental functioning that can be applied to any situation. I've been meditating since 1987, and this book has made me see everything with new eyes. My practice is reenergized, and I'm profoundly grateful for it.
Good to understand the brain waves. The author's wish to use brain waves with everyone is just not fitting with the meditativeness. It will eventually happen if that is going to help. :)
from the library disc 3 track 1 the music is ok but too much in the background. The words are overly enunciated and the manner reminds me of my 4th grade teacher. It is not pleasant but the instructions might work, I don't know.
track 2 starts with water sounds with birds calls, with music coming in. It becomes piano with chimes in the foreground with the original background.
I loved that book because it does not reduce the mind to a brainwave pattern. The author never advocates the nihilist view that our state of mind is the mere result of some frequency in the brain activity. There is a correlation, but never a causation stated in any direction.
