I knew the doctor so this might be a bit biased. He truly tried to convey his experience in the North. I did find it a bit tedious and read it to help me fall asleep. That said, I admire him for writing a book as a doctor with no writing experience. And he really did try to make difference with his work.

I would be interested to hear what the Inuit think of this book because it seemed to me to be remarkably modern in it's tone with less of the anticipated "white's eye view" than I expected. Don't get me wrong - there are still a few things that will make you cringe - but overall I got the sense Moody genuinely respected the customs and way of life of the people he was doctoring. His descriptions are immersive and he manages to make what is mostly a landscape of snow and ice interesting. There is less medical adventure than I anticipated although there is, of course, still that element.

I read this because I was on a kick to see if you really can't judge a book by it's cover (ie: such bad art - sorry whoever painted this....) and it's true. Both of the first two books in my self-created "series" were great.

Well done documentary up until the author switches to prospecting chapter 38 . He is heartless of the Inuit that served him so well when he could of shared his supplies. His prospecting chapters are boring and his wild life photography of pursuing a polar bear to death would make any wildlife photographer shutter! He might’ve stuck with what he does best doctoring and through doctoring his observations on invert life are most valuable! too bad he kept venturing where no one should’ve gone!

STUPID! This book is incredibly thorough at explaining things. Too thorough in my opinion. It has some interesting pictures, but other then that this book is boring and really long.
