Evan the Duke of Pratton has been called the Mad Duke by members of the Ton. They suspect that he viciously murdered his father, mother and brother. The Ton has no real bases for believing this. but of course, they love a scandal. Evan and his sister Jenny are badly treated by the Ton. Jenny decides to have ball. Hopefully so the Aristocracy can see that Evan is not a murderer.
Abigail is the daughter of the deceased Marquess of Clarke and has been left in the care of her mean and cruel cousin Jeremy the new Marquess of Clarke. He wants to marry Abigail off as soon as possible. They attend the Pratton's Ball.
Abigail goes off on her own and trips on her gown Evan tries to catch her but falls on top of her and they are caught by her cousin Jermey. Jermey makes sure everyone at the ball believes that the Duke has compromised her. Of course they marry!! BLAH BLAH BLAH!!
There is no chemistry between Evan and Abigail they seem more like good friends. There is no romance at all. This story is squeaky clean! No sexual tension just nothing!! The banter between the characters is repetitions and basically boring. The reader will know immediately who murdered Evans and Jennys parents. The authors attempt to divert the attention who the murderer might be didn't work for me. It was obvious as to who it really was.
An enjoyable read! I had a good time with this book. The plot was fun to follow, I enjoyed watching our two main characters get to know one another and later start loving one another. Near the end, it did feel as though they were put to the back to focus on the mystery, but it was still fun. The actual baddy was predictable and I did guess who it was and why they did it in the first 20% (maybe less) but I was still emotionally impacted by it so I suppose that makes it a win.
A historical romance where an accident results in marriage which slowly turns into a romance and banishing old ghosts. The heroine, 21-year-old Lady Abigail, starts the story knowing nothing of her new husband other than the rumors he murdered his family. The hero, Evan Wilson the 'Mad' Duke of Pratton, has largely stayed out of society since 5 year ago his parents were murdered and the rumors that he was involved flourished.
This one was just not for me. I didn't find the characters believable (details below). I found the story very slow especially in the middle. The unmasking of the real killer was 1) basically an accident - this is not a who done it, and 2) anticlimactic because the reader could see it coming from a mile away. Also this story left me confused about when & where it was set due conflicting details. I make no claims to be an expert on the time period, but several thing struck me as anachronistic. Finally this story seems to call it 'love' when the characters seem to simply 'care about each other'.
*****Spoiler Alert***** This Book Includes Violence. Heroine slapped hard, references to fact hero's parents & older brother murdered but no descriptions of how Sex None. Hero does ask if heroine wants to start a family & she says yes, otherwise just kissing
Things That Bothered Me Characters The characters were all so very often tooo000 understanding. They all more or less spent a great deal of time trying to put themselves in each other's shoes & imagine how the other might feel. In my experience people rarely bother to do this. Then, miracle of miracles, they get it right when they imagine how the other might feel. People are all different and can often respond to the same thing in startlingly different ways. This whole thing was not believable, and the fact that the 2nd character spent so much time thinking about how the 1st was thinking meant that we didn't get to know the 2nd character at all.
Where? I am by no means a stickler for historical accuracy, but even so certain things in this book threw me. For one were they in town (London) or in the country? They talk about the hero hiding from society of the ton like they are in London, but why wouldn't the hero have escaped to the country if he didn't want to face ton society? The author gave the houses names like they were country homes, not city townhouses. Yet, the season is mentioned as if they are in town. So which is it supposed to be?
When? The Duke's house is old. So, the idea that it has a 'master bedroom' instead of separate bedrooms with a connecting door like every other historical romance doesn't make any sense.
Slap Scene I couldn't stomach the whole 'I'm glad he slapped me because now I'll know you'll protect me" thing. I get what the author was going for but having a victim be thankful for the abuse was not the way to get there. Ugh.
Abuse? The author raises the idea that the heroine may have been struck before when she lived with her cousin Jeremy in the fact that she is so cautious of making men angry. However, all the author does is hint here and there. It's never brought out into the light or dealt with.
I enjoyed this book for its intrigue and suspense. The storyline was a common one, a young woman losing her father and the estate being inherited by a disagreeable cousin who wants to be rid of her and hurriedly marries her to a notorious « mad » Duke. The story was needlessly long, as though the writer needed to increase the length of the book. A lot of action and dialogue was repetitive and unnecessary. And tedious.
This writer made no effort whatsoever to respect the customs, traditions, speech or manners of this time period. The rude and hostile behaviours displayed towards the duke, be he mad or not, were unlikely and unrealistic. The dialogue was thoroughly modern with expressions such as « all right » and other similar inappropriate expressions. The writing was unskilled and unpolished. But the story was clean and wholesome, which I appreciated very much.
I was bored by the repetitious waffle regarding the murders, the Duke emotional turmoil, society’s gossip, his hatred of the same, etc etc etc. It took a while to warm to Abigail who was a deeply flawed character whom the writer didn’t portray well. Taking her meals in her room, avoiding her new husband, then blaming it on not knowing him at all. How on earth did the author think her character WOULD get to know him? This author’s grasp of this period of history and life at the time, is practically non-existent. A Marquis would never answer his front door. The butler or a footman would do it. Nor would he fetch his cousin, (whom he refers to as his sister at one point), he’d send a servant for her. He could not refuse to let Lily the maid leave with Abigail, she was not a slave nor an indentured servant. All Lily had to do was give notice. If Jenny is the same age as Abigail then she is 21, and definitely NOT too young to be in society. Her debut may have been delayed by mourning for her parents & brother, but she was more than old enough. The only way people could stop the Duke from obtaining a Special Licence would be to take evidence against him to the Archbishop’s office. This of course would require knowledge, in the first place, that the Duke was going to apply for one. Only the Archbishop of Canterbury issued Special Licences, it wasn’t easy and it was expensive. Don’t waste your time with this one.
Ms Baton has produced a really great story. Once I started reading I could not put it down. This book has a mystery, horrible people, and lots of love. Forced by her cousin to marry a man she doesn't know and who has a bad reputation. Rumors and gossip follow the Duke. His mother, father and brother are brutal murdered, the duke and sister are only survivors. People believe that the duke was the one who killed his family, he remembers nothing of that whole day. Read along as the Evan and Abigail get to know one another and fall in love after their hasty marriage. Find out who did murder his family and why. Must read story if you enjoy Historical Regency Romance.
I loved Evan and Abigail’s story. When Abigail’s father died her despicable cousin became the Marquees and would do anything to get rid of her. Evan and his sister Jenny have lived the last 5 years in a bubble after the tragic death of their parents and older brother. Society calls Evan the Mad Duke since they believe he killed his family. When Jenny suggest a ball he reluctantly agrees. During the Ball, Evan and Abigail are caught in a compromising position accidentally. As she tripped and he grabbed to cushion her fall. Because of her cousin who makes a very loud commotion and verbally tells everyone at the Ball that Abigail was compromised by the Mad Duke her future is sealed. A wonderful story about trust, love, lies and so much more.
I couldn’t sleep and this was in my to be read list so decided to give it a go. Read it in a couple hours one night. Definitely a little slow. However there is some thing that just made me keep reading. It was interesting and although I had suspicions about who was behind the whole Mad Duke issue I didn’t guess that it would play out like it did. In the end I felt happy with the story. Not some thing I would reread. There were some minor errors like getting names wrong or saying sister instead of cousin. Rating: G, there was murder but it was years before in the story, nothing gory, clean, a couple non descriptive lip touches.
What a wonderful book! The H and h were perfectly matched. They both had been through great losses. This story pulled me in right from the start. The plot was really good and flowed smoothly with the side characters making the storyline more interesting. I wonder if the ton was really as shallow and cruel as they were in this book. Makes for great reading! I really enjoyed this book. A wonderful romantic story for Evan and Abigail.
All I can say is, buy the book you will love it! Well done Tiffany!
Unusual story idea, but the writing was amateurish. When a writer constantly begins dialogue with "Well. . . ," I know not to expect much and, unfortunately, I was correct. The characters were not developed enough to seem anything but the writer's puppets. At times the writing was redundant. The author seemed to have little knowledge of the way of life for such high-ranking nobles (not uncommon in this genre). The author may be a creative romantic, but, unfortunately, is not a skilled writer.
Abigail wanders into a library and is caught by Evan in trying to get away from him she falls and when trying to stop her falling Evan falls with her. Her cousin seize the chance to cause a scandal forcing them to marry. Evan is kind and allows Abigail time to get to know him during this time she helps him solve his parents and brother murdered and fall in love.
Excellent story. Take one cousin who wants to marry off his cousin who is his ward as soon as possible and take a seriously damaged duke who is called mad and oh my but you have the making of a very interesting story. What started out as a marriage of convenience for Abigail and Evan it turned out to be a mystery into Evan family’s death. Very good story loved the different twists and the characters were a great blend of good and evil.
Definitely a must read and highly recommend reading this amazing book. I really enjoyed reading about this mystery adventure. The characters are absolutely interesting and entertaining as well as the story line with lots of interesting twists and turns throughout to the end. I absolutely loved everything about this amazing journey to a beautiful happy ending. Excellent writing.
Evan's life was crushed by the tragic death of his mother, father and brother. He was the only survivor of the massacre and many rumors began suggesting he was responsible, calling him the Mad Duke. Then his life began to change when he met Lady Abigail under unusual circumstances.
This is about a marriage of convenience due to Abigail have a cousin who can’t wait to get her married off, and uses an innocent situation to accomplish it. As Abigail and Evan learn to love each other there is a series of events that lead to him finding out the truth behind his parents murders
His parents and brother were killed and he the second son was made duke and accused of killing them He met Abigail and they married for convenience but turned to trust and love and then they found the true person behind the deaths and found some peace A good story and it has interesting characters Enjoyed
This is such a well written story with emotions you can relate to. Evan and Abigail have both had personal issues in their lives. Evam is known as the Mad Duke, since his parents and elder brother were found murdered and many think Evan did it. Evan has left the party he is hosting to get away from the rumors. When he goes into his library. he sees a female guest and tells her to leave as this portion of his home is not open for guests. Abigail apologizes and as she is leaving trips and starts ti fall. Evan innocently attempts to help her. Unfortunately they end upon the floor just as her cousin and guardian, Jeremy discovers them in the library alone on the floor. They are forced into a marriage without even knowing each other. How will two people unfamiliar with each other be able to make a marriage work even if it is only a marriage of convience? Read this story to find out and to learn what really happened to Evan's parents and brother. This story will keep you turning page after page to see what happens next.
Loved the story of the Duke who was thought to have killed his parents and older brother to get the title, but remembered nothing that happened. Trying to live a normal life and not have the deaths of affect his future although he has been ostracized by friends since the deaths. Lady Abigail's father died and her cousin took over the estate and wanted to get her out of the house. He forced them to marry. Even though she was afraid of him to begin with, she did come to care for him and believe in his innocence. Even though the rest of the "ton" still believed him a murderer, Abigail found out a few things about the night of the deaths. When she mentioned these to the Duke he went to find out what really happened. The ending was truly a surprise. Who was the real killer and what was the reason for the deaths?
In this boom the main characters, Evan and Abigail have a marriage of convenience due to finding them in the library of Evan's home. This caused Abigail to be thought of as a fallen woman. After some time together they realise that they love each other. They face the problems that come th see their way to love
I enjoyed reading this book about the Mad Duke and how Jeremy and Uncle Norman tried to make events that they caused to be in their favor. They had a way to bring out the truth in due time. I was really shocked by the deeds done by Uncle Norman but so happy that they were able to find closure on there path.
I really enjoyed this story. Evan and Abigail were so pitiful starting out and my heart ached for them. As time wen on however I started rooting for their happily ever after. I am so glad that I received this book as an ARC copy. It was a real pleasure to read.
This book is excellent! The story does point out how judgmental people can be, based on lies This is a story of finding light and love at the end of the tunnel of darkness and sadness.
I was shocked by the “bad guy” . Well worth reading!
The book was well written; however , the plot was something I had read in 2 other novels by 2 different authors (the uncle being responsible for the murders). The major difference in this one is that the uncle accepted responsibility for his actions.
A beautifully written book of survival among rumors against Evan, accused of murdering his parents and older brother! And Abigail, father dies and cousin inherited, has to get rid of her!
I enjoyed the book. However, I was able to figure out who killed the Duke's family before the end. The writer was clever in disguising the reason why. I felt the pain of being falsely accused and how quick people are judged without the facts.
Despite persecution from the Ton, the characters in this book displayed hidden strengths as they met the challenges of the manipulative people in their lives. A good read.
I read this book over a few days and in all honesty I can't say if I actually liked the story or not.The characters were not grabbing my interest and the story line was very predictable.
about how quickly the to n judged a duke for the alleged murder of his parents and his elder brother. He married a wary bride after being compromised. Love wins and the murders are solved.
I knew right from the start who the bad guy was since there was really no one else to consider, but how they would ultimately find out kept the tension going, good story with a lot more intrigue than many of these stories. Highly recommend.
