Martin attended Mary Jane Donohoe School and Marist High School. He began writing very young, selling monster stories to other neighborhood children for pennies, dramatic readings included. Later he became a comic book fan and collector in high school, and began to write fiction for comic fanzines (amateur fan magazines). Martin's first professional sale was made in 1970 at age 21: The Hero, sold to Galaxy, published in February, 1971 issue. Other sales followed.
In 1970 Martin received a B.S. in Journalism from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, graduating summa cum laude. He went on to complete a M.S. in Journalism in 1971, also from Northwestern.
As a conscientious objector, Martin did alternative service 1972-1974 with VISTA, attached to Cook County Legal Assistance Foundation. He also directed chess tournaments for the Continental Chess Association from 1973-1976, and was a Journalism instructor at Clarke College, Dubuque, Iowa, from 1976-1978. He wrote part-time throughout the 1970s while working as a VISTA Volunteer, chess director, and teacher.
In 1975 he married Gale Burnick. They divorced in 1979, with no children. Martin became a full-time writer in 1979. He was writer-in-residence at Clarke College from 1978-79.
Moving on to Hollywood, Martin signed on as a story editor for Twilight Zone at CBS Television in 1986. In 1987 Martin became an Executive Story Consultant for Beauty and the Beast at CBS. In 1988 he became a Producer for Beauty and the Beast, then in 1989 moved up to Co-Supervising Producer. He was Executive Producer for Doorways, a pilot which he wrote for Columbia Pictures Television, which was filmed during 1992-93.
Martin's present home is Santa Fe, New Mexico. He is a member of Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America (he was South-Central Regional Director 1977-1979, and Vice President 1996-1998), and of Writers' Guild of America, West.

Obwohl ich derzeit meine Bachelor-Thesis schreibe, habe ich das Buch dich recht flott beendet (es lebe die Prokrastination!). Habe aus selbigem Grund aber ganz vergessen zumindest mal eine kurze Rezi zum besten zu geben. Aber was soll ich auch groß schreiben ohne mich bei den Game of Thrones Büchern ewig zu wiederholen? Ich liebe diese Geschichte, die Charaktere und die Erzählweise einfach. Das Buch hat sich wieder wahnsinnig schnell und leicht weglesen lassen. Mir gefiel es auch, dass gefühlt sehr vieles in diesem Band von der Serie abweicht, so wurde es ganz und gar nicht langweilig, auch wenn man dachte man weiß schon was passiert. Ich kann diese Geschichte - egal ob als Serie oder Buch - sowieso immer wieder genießen!

Apesar de não ser um dos meus livros preferidos da saga, é impossível não atribuir 5 estrelas.
Muita saúde para o George R. R. Martin para acabar os volumes que faltam a seguir ao 10º.

W tej części przeważały jednak mniej lubiane przeze mnie POV, chociaż wciąż jest to całkiem angażująca lektura.

Ok, ok, já me reconciliei com o Sr. Martin.
No entanto, achei este livro (refiro-me ao quarto livro da saga e não só a este oitavo volume desta edição portuguesa) muito desequilibrado.
Passei o tempo todo a perguntar-me o que seria feito de alguns dos personagens - especialmente do Tyrion - para no final ler uma nota do autor a explicar que, quando se apercebeu que o livro estava a ficar demasiado grande, optou por dividi-lo em dois livros, mas em vez de o dividir simplesmente ao meio, decidiu fazê-lo de modo a que cada livro ficasse com um conjunto de personagens. Ele justifica-se com o facto de ter sentido que "os leitores ficariam melhor servidos por um livro que contasse toda a história para metade das personagens em vez de metade da história para todas as personagens".
Lamento informá-lo, Sr. Martin, de que pelo menos esta leitora não sentiu que tenha ficado mais bem servida desta forma. Esta opção levou a que houvesse muitos capítulos de algumas personagens (Jaime e Cersei, por exemplo), o que se torna quase aborrecido para quem já estava habituado à diversidade de perspectivas nos livros anteriores (e, embora goste bastante dos capítulos de Jaime, não gosto particularmente dos de Cersei).
Por outro lado, surgem vários capítulos de personagens identificados como "O Profeta", "O Pirata", "O Cavaleiro Maculado", "A Princesa na Torre", em vez dos nomes dos respectivos personagens, como acontecia nos livros anteriores. Não percebi qual foi a intenção do autor, pois na maior parte dos casos até se tratava de personagens que já conhecíamos...
Mais importante que isto, contudo, é que o argumento do Sr. Martin para esta divisão não é válido porque, obviamente, este livro não conta "toda a história para metade dos personagens". A história está longe de acabar para a maior parte deles. Por isso acho que tinha feito muito mais sentido continuar a forma de narrativa habitual, seguindo a ordem cronológica dos acontecimentos. Até porque, de vez em quando, temos uns vislumbres do que aconteceu noutros locais, com outros personagens - como Davos Seaworth - e ficamos um bocado "à nora"...
De qualquer modo, continuo a gostar bastante da história e da escrita e vou começar já de seguida a ler A Dança dos Dragões (deve ter sido complicado para quem leu isto na altura em que foi publicado, pois teria de esperar 6 anos para poder fazê-lo - 2 anos para os portugueses).

However, I found this book very much off-balance (I mean book 4 of the original series and not just this 8th volume of the portuguese edition).
I spent the entire time asking myself what had happened to some of the characters - especially Tyrion, of course - and finally, in the end of the book, I find an author's note explaining that he realized book 4 was getting too long and so he decided to split it in two; but, instead of just cutting it in half, maintaining the chronological sequence, he opted to divide it in a way that each resulting book would have its own cast of characters. He justifies himself saying that he felt "readers would be better served by a book which told the entire story for half the characters instead of half the story for all the characters" (or something like that, I'm reverting the portuguese translation back to english).
I'm sorry to tell you, Mr. Martin, that this particular reader didn't feel that she's been better served by this choice of yours. It led to many chapters being told from the POV of a few characters (Jaime and Cersei, for instance) which is a bit boring for us readers, already used to the diversity of perspectives in the previous books (and although I quite like Jaime's chapters, I don't care so much for Cersei's).
In addition, there are several chapters from characters identified as "The Prophet", "The Reaver", "The Soiled Knight", "The Princess in the Tower" instead of their real names, as it was the rule in the previous books. I didn't get where the author was going with this, since they were, for the most part, previously introduced characters.
More important than that, Martin's argument regarding his option is not a valid one because, obviously, this book doesn't tell "the entire story for half the characters". The story is far from being over for most of them. So I think it would have made much more sense to maintain the usual scheme of the narrative, following the chronological order of events. Even because, from time to time, we get glimpses of what's happening somewhere else with other characters - like Davos Seaworth - and we're left a bit adrift...
Anyway, I'm still enjoying the story and the writing very much and I'll start with Dance of Dragons right away (I'm just wondering how tough it must have been for those who have read this when it came out, having to wait 6 years).

Westeros é uma terra devastada pela guerra; reina a fome e a miséria, os campos estão pejados de cadáveres a apodrecer, e os que sobreviveram ou estão estropiados ou regrediram a um estado muito próximo do selvagem.
Este volume, tal como o anterior centrou-se em Porto Real e não houve noticias de Daenerys ou da Muralha. O anão continua desaparecido e grande parte dos capítulos foram dedicados à maldade de Cersei. Aqui o autor soube dosear muito bem o suspense; quando já temos vontade de entrar pelo livro dentro e esganar a mulher, dá uma reviravolta na história e deixa-nos com um sorriso de orelha a orelha. Os últimos capítulos brindam-nos com boas surpresas, e deixam boas perspetivas no ar…
…o que me está a deixar com muita vontade de pegar nos 2 calhamaços que perfazem milequalquercoisa páginas e ficar logo a saber …como não acaba a história…

1. Finalmente começa o declínio da Cersei!
2. O que mais poderá acontecer aos Stark? (esta questão acompanha - me desde o primeiro livro e o Martin nunca deixa de me surpreender...)
3. Petyr continua a ser o personagem mais astuto e dissimulado de todos. Não sei qual será o seu final, mas para já, é o melhor jogador nesta dança das cadeiras. Sem nunca se sentar em nenhuma tem o mindinho em todas !
4. Dorne está prestes a revelar - se demonstrando que o passado não ficou esquecido. Felizmente !
5. Apesar de algumas revelações este continua a ser um livro de política, conversas e negociações.
6. Westeros está devastado e apesar de em Porto Real existirem agora histórias com um final por revelar, estou pronta a viajar para a muralha e a navegar para o outro lado do mar. Sinto falta do Tyrion e da Dany. E até um pouco de Jon.

«O Mar de Ferro» tem tantos pontos positivos como negativos. Enquanto lia, os meus pensamentos vaguearam entre "Esta história é espetacular!" e "Quando é que este capítulo acaba?".
Este oitavo volume da saga fica à frente do anterior – «O Festim dos Corvos» –, mas não se iguala a «A Glória dos Traidores».
Com mistério, suspense, intriga e decisões tomadas, assim como reviravoltas, «O Mar de Ferro», seja por que motivo for, deixa-nos ansiosos para ler «A Dança dos Dragões».

Den einzig wirklich spannenden Handlungsstrang hatte Cersei zu bieten aber ich bin dennoch unfassbar gespannt, was mit all den anderen, die in diesem Buch aufgetreten sind, so geschehen wird. Noch gespannter bin ich allerdings auf Tyrion, Daenerys und Jon - bis zur nächsten Reise nach Westeros wird es also bestimmt nicht mehr allzu lange dauern. :)

3.5 ⭐️ Duży spadek poziomu po poprzednich tomach, było kilka naprawdę świetnych scen, ale kilka na prawie 1000 stron książki to trochę za mało. Mam wrażenie, że autor po zabiciu połowy postaci w poprzednim tomie nie wiedział co ma dalej zrobić i może to tłumaczy to, że kilka postaci np. głównie idzie gdzieś, nie wiadomo do końca gdzie przez całą książkę… Jak dla mnie przegadana, prawie nic się w niej nie działo. Dużo zostało zmienionych rzeczy z tej książki w serialu i się nie dziwię, bo widz by zasnął. Najbardziej podobały mi się fragmenty z perspektywy Cersei, chyba najbardziej dopracowane.
Aha i największy problem to ja mam do polskiej wersji okładkowej, mamy na niej Tyriona i smoka… Ani jednego ani drugiego nie ma w tej książce XD Ja rozumiem że chcieli serialową okładkę, ale mogli wybrać jakiś inny plakat, przecież to jest bez sensu. W „Tańcu ze smokami” z tego co widzę okładka nawiązuje do Aryi, której (przynajmniej według notki od autora na końcu tej książki) nie ma w następnym tomie… Super

Septembar sam započeo drugim delom Gozbe za vrane, ali zbog puno obaveza malo mi se čitanje oteglo čiji fan baš i nisam. Ono što bih kao neku zanimljivost izdvojio jeste da svi citati iz ove knjige koje sam izdvojio su bili na stranicama koje su sadržavale brojeve 1 i 7.
Prve dve knjige iz serijala Pesme leda i vatre su gotovo iste kao i serija. Od treće knjige radnja počinje da se menja. U četvrtoj knjizi se još više razlikuje (iako su te neke glavne stvari iste) ipak mi je ova knjiga bila najmanje zanimljiva. Nije tu bilo velikih preokreta, ni velikih šokova (ako izuzmem Gospu Kamenog Srca). Nekako je knjiga delovala bespotrebno otegnuto.
Kao što sam rekao prošlog puta, ovde imamo priliku i da pratimo priču iz ugla Sersei. Tako imamo savršeno uvid u njene misli, želje i razmišljanja. Iako je u seriji Sersei neprikosnoveno odigrana, u knjizi imamo još veći uvid u njenu spremnost da sve žrtvuje zarad svojih ličnih želja. Da, Sersei je okrutna osoba puna zlobe sa kakvom ne bih voleo da imam posla u životu ali je nekako maestralna u svemu tome. Ne pristaje na kompromise, šta zamisli to i uradi. Pokazala je nekoliko puta slabosti i svaki put je sebe prekorila zbog toga. Definitivno bih voleo da se u poslednje dve knjige takođe pojavljuju poglavlja iz njenog ugla.
Najčešće su poglavlja bila Sersei, Džejmi, Brijena, povremeno ubacujući još po nekog lika. Lik Arje (koji veoma volim) ovde nije bio toliko učestao nažalost. Ali se ona bar pojavljuje u petoj knjizi. O Brijeni saznajemo malo više, dok kod Džejmija dolazi do preokreta rekao bih. On je na početku predstavljen kao vitez - hrabar, jak i neustrašiv, a sad počinjemo da uviđamo da je i on jedan običan čovek pun mana.
Iako sam mnogo puta pročitao komentare da Martin namerno odugovlači pisanje sa ciljem da uzme što više para, moj utisak nije takav. Ovoliko opširne knjige i ovoliko obimna priča ne može na svakom koraku da bude veoma sočna. Ova knjiga je meni više bila zatišje pred buru i iskreno se nadam da će to tako i biti. Da li ih vredi čitati? Odgovor je da!
Prvoobrednik mi se nije dopao, kako u seriji, tako ni ovde. Ne volim ljude koji koriste svoju poziciju da sprovode pravdu u ime Boga ili zakona, kad na kraju ispadne da se postupa po njihovoj ličnoj volji.

Najčešće su poglavlja bila Sersei, Džejmi, Brijena, povremeno ubacujući još po nekog lika. Lik Arje (koji veoma volim) ovde nije bio toliko učestao nažalost. Ali se ona bar pojavljuje u petoj knjizi. O Brijeni saznajemo malo više, dok kod Džejmija dolazi do preokreta rekao bih. On je na početku predstavljen kao vitez - hrabar, jak i neustrašiv, a sad počinjemo da uviđamo da je i on jedan običan čovek pun mana.
Iako sam mnogo puta pročitao komentare da Martin namerno odugovlači pisanje sa ciljem da uzme što više para, moj utisak nije takav. Ovoliko opširne knjige i ovoliko obimna priča ne može na svakom koraku da bude veoma sočna. Ova knjiga je meni više bila zatišje pred buru i iskreno se nadam da će to tako i biti. Da li ih vredi čitati? Odgovor je da!
Prvoobrednik mi se nije dopao, kako u seriji, tako ni ovde. Ne volim ljude koji koriste svoju poziciju da sprovode pravdu u ime Boga ili zakona, kad na kraju ispadne da se postupa po njihovoj ličnoj volji.

Završih sa čitanjem knjige Gozba za vrane: drugi deo i sada sa sigurnošću mogu reći: da, potpuno se slažem sa @poslednji_musketar da je ovaj deo serijala predviđen da bude jedan spinoff koji će nam približiti neke dinastije i zemlje koje su pominjane u prethodnim delovima, ali nisu dovoljno obrađene.
Ništa se posebno ne dešava, ali zato upoznajemo neke od likova koji su značajni za dalja dešavanja, saznajemo njihove motive za spletke koje prave ali upoznajemo i njihove strahove i slabosti.
Dominiraju poglavlja sa Sersei, Brijenom, Dornjanina i vladarima dinastije Grejdžoj. Upoznajemo nekoliko likova koji su, po mom mišljenju, bespravno izostavljeni u seriji jer bi definitivno gledaocima bili zanimljivi. Spomenuću Arijanu Martel, ćerku Dorana Martela koja je najinteresantniji lik među Dornjanima.
Sersei je dobila svojih pet minuta. Ona je sada vlast, manipuliše novim kraljem i bez zadrške se rešava svojih neprijatelja, nemilosrdno i bez griže savesti. Daleko je okrutnija i lukavija nego Sersei u seriji i verujem da će svakome ko je upozna u serijalu, iako antagonista, biti jedan od dražih likova.
Puno je tu likova, zato spomenuh samo one koji su meni bili posebno zanimljivi.
"Reči su kao vetar. Ne mogu da te povrede. Samo pusti da utihnu."
U ovom delu je problematična dinamika, aktuelna radnja teče vrlo sporo jer su poglavlja prepuna flešbekova u daleku prošlost, što meni nameće pitanje kako će Martin završiti sve priče koje je započeo i odgovoriti na sva dešavanja koja su ostala otvorena.
Definitivno će biti potrebna još koja knjiga kao Vatra i krv i Vitez sedam kraljevstava. Nešto kao Tolkinove Nezavršene priče.
Međutim, uzevši u obzir Martinove godine, skeptičan sam. Više se uzdam u fan stories 😅

Dieser Band hat mich etwas weniger gefesselt als der letzte, obwohl ich nicht genau deuten kann, woran das gelegen hat. Es geschehen eindrückliche Dinge, aber dazwischen zog sich die Handlung für mich etwas zu sehr dahin. Trotzdem perfekte Abendlektüre vor dem Zubettgehen.

“As Crónicas de Gelo e Fogo” (Song of Ice and Fire, no original), de George R.R. Martin, contam até ao presente com quatro volumes no original, sendo que por cá a editora decidiu publicá-los divididos em dois, e este “O Mar de Ferro”, sendo o oitavo volume, corresponde à segunda metade do 4.º volume original. Isto significa que, a partir de agora, os fãs desta incrível saga terão de esperar que o autor complete o 5.º volume (A Dance With Dragons) para que possamos continuar a seguir as aventuras das personagens que já conquistaram o nosso coração. A esperança é que o próximo livro veja finalmente a luz do dia durante 2010, mas não ponho as minhas mãos no fogo uma vez que no final de “Mar de Ferro” existe uma nota do autor a expressar o seu desejo de ter o livro pronto dali a um ano… portanto, em 2006.
“O Mar de Ferro” segue a linha já traçada pelo volume anterior, “O Festim dos Corvos”, e volta a levar o leitor às intrigas nas Ilhas de Ferro, em Dorne e em Porto Real. A imagem de marca do autor, baseada em intrigas políticas intrincadas, grande profusão de personagens, crueldade – com as suas personagens e com o leitor, porque o deixa frequentemente sem saber o que pensar uma vez que já percebemos que com este autor nem tudo o que parece é – , está presente neste livro, tal como nos anteriores.
A grande força desta saga são as personagens, e ao manter de fora personagens que a maioria dos leitores têm como preferidas e que aprenderam a amar – Jon Snow, Tyrion ou Daenerys – o autor correu o risco de diminuir o nível de interesse do leitor, e foi precisamente isso que aconteceu comigo. As novas personagens introduzidas e mesmo as que já conhecemos apresentam desenvolvimentos interessantes, mas as que não aparecem com capítulos próprios pairam sempre como uma sombra, porque o autor refere-os amiúde, atiçando ainda mais a curiosidade do leitor em relação ao que lhes terá acontecido. Não é um mau livro – muito longe disso, porque GRRM mesmo no seu pior é muito bom – mas o autor deixou a fasquia tão alta nos volumes anteriores que é quase impossível estes não saberem a pouco.
E agora segue-se a (longa) espera. A Dance With Dragons irá trazer de volta as personagens que não apareceram no volume anterior e repetir algumas, sendo que cobrirá os acontecimentos paralelos aos que acompanhámos em A Feast for Crows. Resta-me apenas aconselhar a leitura desta saga – como já tenho feito tantas vezes – para quem gosta de histórias e personagens que nos agarram de tal forma que se tornam inesquecíveis.

Wow another book from Game of Thrones finished!
I think this book was important to make some connections, as a bridge... to understand characters and what was happening after the war between Robb and Lannister. How devastated the land was and what people were doing to protect themselves.
I liked Brienne and her devotion to be a knight and keep her vows. How she struggles everyday because she is a woman and not accepted in the world of men. She has to hear them (man) telling her how ugly she is... she has a patience of gold! 😡☹️
Cercei wants to prove that she is her father son. She will do anything to be a Queen and rule the seven kingdoms. She really hates her brother, Tyrion! Well, she is not a great person.
Her plans take a turn to tragedy... what will happen? Hummmm
Sam storyline was a bit boring. We discover little things that are important (obviously) but then is all about the voyage - storms, Gilly crying, Aemon and at the end of the book the arrival.
Then we have Jaime trying to be the knight he was. Going from Kings Landing to Riverrun. This friendship with the justicer was fine but he and Bronn on the tv show was better. This thoughts are 99% Cercei and 1% father... 😫😞
Arya is being Arya... strong and trying to be no one!! Sansa is adapting well to Littlefinger schemes... poor, sweetrobin!!
Why did Arys did that is beyond me 🤔 Arianne was interesting and I felt we saw little of Asha...

Drugi deo Gozbe za vrane se razlikuje od prvog po mnogo čemu. Dosta likova nije prisutno, a priču pratimo uglavnom iz ugla Lanistera, Sanse, Brijene i Sema. Uprkos tome što mnogi likovi nisu prisutni u ovom delu priče, to nije pokvarilo utisak. Naprotiv, priča je vrlo zanimljiva, od samog početka. Lik Sersei mi se dopada sve više, nakon svakog pročitanog poglavlja. Brojne se spletke i prevare kuju, mada je rat navodno skoro gotov. Akcije ne manjka, mada je ovaj deo suroviji od prethodnog. Ovde već ima zaista važnih detalja koje nisu ni spomenuli u seriji, pa se pitam kako bi serija tekla da su ih ubacili. Znam da ne treba da poredimo seriju i knjige, ali zaista mi bude krivo kad shvatim šta je sve izostavljeno. Na toliko mesta sam ostao zatečen, jer su vrlo važni detalji menjani ili ne postoje. Gomila zanimljivih likova, za koje znam da bi bili interesantni i u adaptaciji, potpuno su izbačeni iz serije. Avaj, ne treba tugovati. Baš iz tog razloga ja još uvek svima preporučujem da čitaju ovaj serijal, jer će im doživljaj biti totalno drugačije iskustvo. Kako se bližim poslednjem delu do sada objavljenom, pomalo tugujem jer se priču bliži kraj. Sa Martinom je tako, ne želite da se priča završi, bez obzira koliko stranica ima knjiga. Smatram da je Pesma leda i vatre serijal koji bi svi trebalo da pročitaju, jer propuštaju puno toga. Savetujem da se proba makar prvi deo, pa ako vam se priča dopadne, bonus. 😁

Band 8 war auf jeden Fall spannender als Band 7. Trotzdem gefällt es mir nicht so gut, dass viele Charaktere hier noch nicht vorkamen und dafür band 9 und 10 zur selben Zeit spielen. Also insgesamt doch einer der schwächeren Bände.

kiedy juz sie przelknie brak glownych postaci sagi to jest to naprawde solidna czesc, dobrze budujaca "nadejscie zimy", drugi tom znacznie bardziej mi przypadl do gustu, moze przez to, ze w pierwszym dalej tesknym wzrokiem szukalem narracji Tyriona. niestety coraz bardziej zaczynam odczuwac zal z powodu tego, ze zostala juz tylko jedna ksiazka z sagi, a historia dalej niedokonczona

Pierwsza część tomu czwartego nie podobała mi się tak bardzo, że potrzebowałam dwóch lat, aby zebrać tyłek i dokończyć (Martin ponad dziesięć i dalej nie ma zakończenia, więc nie ma presji). Za to ta podobała mi się tak bardzo, że nie mogłam się rozstać na długo, ale też trochę rozciągnęłam ją w czasie, bo nie do końca chciałam tak szybko kończyć i musiałam sobie poprzypominać trochę rzeczy. Świetny tom, ale radość z czytania trochę psuje fakt, że moge nigdy nie poznać zakończenia.

Lepsza niż poprzednia część, ale wciąż nie tak świetna jak pozostałe książki z tej serii. Rozumiem zabieg autora, aby oddzielić bohaterów na dwa różne tomy, jednak strasznie utrudniało mi to czytanie. Nie było w tej pozycji zbytnio postaci, na których perspektywę bym czekała podczas lektury.

Band 8 enthält - ebenso wie Band 7 - einiges an Westeros-Lore, aber die Ereignisdichte in Band 8 nimmt im Verlauf deutlich zu. Insbesondere die jeweils letzten Kapitel der Protagonisten sind alle miteinander unfassbar stark erzählt; sowohl persönlich-charakterliche als auch politische Entwicklungen finden ihre Highlights in jedem letzten Kapitel. Zusätzlich nimmt der allerletzte Satz des Buches den Prolog in Bezug und stellt dessen Ende auf den Kopf (wtf?!).
Auch wenn dieser Teil von einigen als Sonderling der Reihe betrachtet wird, wirkt er auf mich wie die logische Konsequenz, in die 'A Storm of Swords' münden musste. 'A Feast For Crows' (also die Bände 7 und 8) ist viel mehr als ein Lückenfüller im Lied von Eis und Feuer.
Mein persönlicher Lieblingssatz: "Lebensgefährlich ist es vor allem, von einfacher Geburt zu sein, wenn die großen Lords ihr Spiel der Throne spielen."
