Trust/Truth

Rate this book
Fidelity and honesty on trial!
Party boy James Michael Chase can't stand his boyfriend Terry's secretive nature. And Terry suspects James Michael is messing around on him. The couple's relationship dissolves quickly, resulting in a custody battle over their dog, and their humorous fight for love and understanding of each other. The bold and funny graphic novel, a stylistic departure for Fish along with colorist William O. Tyler, delivers the long-awaited second half to this homo-satirization, partially serialized at Popimage.com as The Tragic Something or Other. Cavalcade of Boys; series creator Tim Fish (Strugglers, Love is the Reason) presents this new installment in full color. Trust/Truth was written as a stand-alone romantic comedy featuring familiar Cavalcade characters and will appeal to fans of the original series, gay and straight alike.

An okay book (2.5 stars)
I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, but do not regret appending money on it.
The writing is unimaginative yet fluent, the art work is nice for an indie book, but not that special. An okay LGBT book to pass 30 minutes with

I've said before that I'm a Tim Fish fan. I've enjoyed watching the world of Cavalcade of Boys expand and deepen over the years, and Fish's latest entry is no exception.

This volume follows the development of the relationship of James Michael Chase and Terry that was introduced in Love is the Reason. One of my few complaints about that volume was that I felt like I didn't really get to know James Michael; this volume takes care of that. I may not like James Michael anymore than I did in the previous book, but I feel like I know him better and understand him a little bit more. And I definitely feel like I know Terry better.

The story is a very humorous look at the ups-and-downs of a relationship, based in part (but only in part) on a 1920s stage play about a straight party couple whose relationship comes apart at the seams. Tim calls this book a "homo-satirization" of that play. The humor is fairly broad, the type you'd expect to see on a sit-com or perhaps an old Noel Coward "comedy of manners." Lots of sex jokes, lots of recurring gags, physical humor, etc. It all hangs together well in the narrative, and proves that you can do a Gay Relationship story that doesn't take itself too seriously (and doesn't at all involve coming out or AIDS as the main story point). There are points where the usually somewhat-cartoony Fish art veers into complete cartoony-ness (if that's even a word) but even at those points the art is still recognizable as Tim's work and no-one else's.

Trust/Truth is a fast read and a fun read, and you don't need to have prior knowledge of Cavalcade of Boys to understand what's going on. The book is advertised as a stand-alone graphic novel in the Cavalcade world, and it lives up to that advertising. If you haven't read any of Tim's work before now, Trust/Truth is as good a place to start as any!

Definitely recommended.

I was very confused by the story in this graphic novel. I don’t know what the point was… did he cheat? Did the other really know about it? They got back together b/c they missed each other and not really resolving that don’t ask don’t tell doesn’t work for a relationship? Was there trust?

Why did the German dude come back and he was so needy and John Michael just went with it.

I can understand that in reality people are confused and do stupid things…but it just didn’t make sense.

Although, I enjoyed the drawings, and some parts were funny and the dog was adorable.

It was def. “Meh.”

This book picks up on the storyline started in the last section of Love is the Reason. Well drawn and well written, Trust/Truth is an amusing, campy, and absolutely adorable short story of trust and love. Fun read.
