The eighth volume stands out from the rest of the series not only because it’s the longest one, but also because it’s a really engaging ensemble drama. Mii-kun and Maa-chan take a bit of a backseat here, while the focus shifts to other characters, many of whom appear in the author’s other works, giving the volume a sort of crossover feel. The pair that stood out the most to me was Detective Hanasaki Taro and his partner Touki.

Mii-kun and Maa-chan spend all five days of their seaside vacation mostly off-screen, and the story itself covers only half of the first day of their trip.

This volume continues the theme of everyday life introduced in Volume 7.5 (i):for Mii-kun, a peaceful life is something extraordinary. He consciously stays out of the incident happening around him and takes small actions to avoid getting involved, fully aware that any interference could ruin his happy time with Maa-chan.

And then comes the Epilogue.
