A young girl is born the heir to an alien religious dynasty. Possessing the power to destroy worlds with her mind, Liana is under an assassination order from the government of her father's home world. A foiled coup attempt results in a power vacuum that leaves the alien world without its treasure weapon. The aliens have no choice but to take Liana as their reluctant new Avatar. Only an angry slave and a small group of resistance fighters can free her -- and the universe -- from the dangers of her power.

Imma just gonna put this out there, okay?

Where I come from, CODA means end.

I think I will probably be dead before there is any sort of conclusion this.

Which is, y'know, fine. I mean, I'm thirty now. I've figured out what a gay looks like. I've read other space opera.

But still.

Coda should mean end, dammit.

I've been a fan of this series for so long and am so glad to be able to pick it up again now and find out what happens after all these years. It has definitely been worth the wait. A Distant Soil is unlike any other comic, it's space fantasy/science fiction that's more character driven than plot. They spend a lot more time talking than they do in most comics, there's not a fist fight every issue, instead there is torture, and child abuse, and it ends with a threat to kill everyone on Earth. It's as gritty as it is gorgeous. A combination you really don't see other places. But despite dealing with such awful things, it's not relentlessly grim, because these are still real people and there's a lot of humor as well.

The penultimate volume starts with the heroes in a huge amount of trouble, mostly captured by the hierarchy and without hope, and things only get worse from there. D'mer goes through the most changes in this one, and I really enjoyed his new role. Liana starts to find her own will. Poor Seren seems almost totally lost. When you don't think you can hate the bad guys any more you do.

I'm really looking forward to following this series through to it's conclusion. It's definitely been worth the wait.

8 years ago, if you would have even mentioned "A Distant Soil" to me, I would have had a heart attack. I was so obsessed with the series that I would think about it 24 hours a day. The story seems to be on hiatus. This kills me. I have been waiting a long time to find out what happens to Liana and the rest of the cast. I am still in love with the story, but I can at least catch my breath no when it is mentioned.

The huge cast makes it hard to follow at times, but the series remains gripping and very imaginative. I love it.
