This was such a long story that I'm not sure where to start. Let's recap. People disappear from the planet, leaving behind magicians and angels. A beast is trying to escape from Houdini's water chamber, and certain sacrifices must be made for the beast to form and take over the world. This book has angels and demons. Some are bad that you assumed are good, and vice versa. This book definitely kept me on my toes trying to guess, but then I stopped guessing and kept reading. Most of the book takes place in Vegas, which is always fun. The characters very much come alive on the pages. There are many characters, and at first it was almost overwhelming getting so much info on their backgrounds..but that's a good thing because character development is what makes a good book great. The theme is fictional religion, which really isn't my thing... However, I still enjoyed the story. It's very well written. I almost wish I had known more about Houdini and Jim Morrison before reading this book. It was neat how they were intertwined into the story. This is a long book. A ton of stuff happens, but it's worth the investment of time. It did very much remind me of Stephen King's Stand, but basically because good vs evil in Vegas. So maybe the similarity was all in my head. Each chapter starts with a quote ( I'm sure they are all famous quotes, but I only knew about half of them). Also, a magic theme is very interesting. Learning different skill sets of magic from each character was probably the most fascinating part of the book. This is not my typical read.... I'm still glad I read it.
There aren't enough good things that I can say about this book. The characters are great, the story is rich, the pace is perfectly set. I really loved this book and look forward to reading the sequel!
I'll be honest and say this book caught me off-guard. There were many surprising twists in the book and for the first time while writing a review, I sat wondering where to start first.
An Hour for Magic is a game of Good Vs Evil. Only I'm not sure who is good and who is evil.
The story starts with the great magician Houdini trapping an evil in his water chamber. What follows is a series of events that's set in motion with the evil trapped. On a mysterious day, people on earth vanishes without a trace with only the magicians and 4 criminals who have committed an unspeakable crime are left.
A strange pull steers them towards Las Vegas. The evil trapped inside the water chamber, seduces peoples with false promises as it anticipates it's freedom while the forces of God fights hard to keep him trapped.
There are a lot of characters in this book and the author had done a great job with them all. It was bit confusing at first to keep track of all the characters, but after the initial few chapters, it was easy to follow. Each character has a story and they all fit perfectly to the plot. Each character was directly or indirectly involved.
Also, at times, I found I liked the evil character better than the good ones. As I said, I couldn't figure out, who is good and who is bad. So, I settled down with the evil-the beast. He doesn't stray from his character and stays honest to his part, doing all vile things he is expected to do. But, there are moments that made me laugh. Especially when his water chamber is subjected to destruction in an attempt to destroy him and how the beast describes the restoration process as a day in spa. His dis-ease when the water chamber is turned to an aquarium is funny.
It's not easy to handle so many characters, but the author does so with an ease while giving them each an important role to play. No one is without significance. The reader will remember each character in the book. My favourite was the beast, Jackson, Charlie Parker and Davino.
Loved the writing style and descriptions. This story is a page turner, surprising it's readers every few minutes. Readers who like a good suspense with an apocalyptic background, will love this. I should warn though, if you are extremely religious, this is not for you. Most of the characters have an abusive past, so it's not for weaker hearts.

This book grabbed ahold of me right from the beginning and didn't let go! The pace was great and kept me feeling tense throughout...a page turner for sure!
