About the author

Born in Fuente Vaqueros, Granada, Spain, June 5 1898; died near Granada, August 19 1936, García Lorca is one of Spain's most deeply appreciated and highly revered poets and dramatists. His murder by the Nationalists at the start of the Spanish civil war brought sudden international fame, accompanied by an excess of political rhetoric which led a later generation to question his merits; after the inevitable slump, his reputation has recovered (largely with a shift in interest to the less obvious works). He must now be bracketed with Machado as one of the two greatest poets Spain has produced in the 20th century, and he is certainly Spain's greatest dramatist since the Golden Age.

Muy, muy, muy impresionante.
"Poeta en Nueva York" es todo lo que yo considero buena poesía (aunque realmente sólo he leído un par de libros de poesía). Por lo general los versos de Lorca que encontramos de en este libro se dividen en dos pilares: amor y crítica a sociedad, que nos las describe sucia y con todas las diferencias de la época. Pero no os mentiré, a veces es complicado de seguirle el ritmo al autor.
Un libro que recomendaría a aquellos a quienes guste la poesía o bien decidan empezar a leerla.

Dato: Puedes hacerte con "Poeta en Nueva York" por menos de tres euros gracias a la colección Austral básicos.

Ambas son obras excepcionales de Lorca. Yerma con su esencia rural y de critica a las normas sociales y los roles de género que reprimían a las mujeres y por otro lado, "Poeta en Nueva York" un poemario extraordinario pero muy sobrecogedor con versos crudos que reflejan el lado cruel y no tan agradable de la sociedad americana de principios del siglo XX. En definitiva, unas lecturas obligatorias para cualquier amante de la literatura española.

The world created in Yerma is one beyond that of the imagination of most writers. Lorca takes poetry to soaring, fantastical heights in this epic collection, revealing a gaudy, gory, gruesomely beautiful New York with some of the most experimental and visceral language put into the lines poetry. The poems are very difficult for a non-Spanish reader; I read in both English and Spanish. The combination works quite well, first experiencing the decadence of Lorca's original language and then finding a bit of clarity in the translation. It is divided into ten sections, not all of which take place in New York, and the poems are so diverse as to deny any collective definition. They are free flowing, musical, informal streams of consciousness, echoing some of the swagger and flow of Walt Whitman but with a much more flair for imagery and language.

What makes Lorca's poems unique is the choices of images and metaphors he uses. He populates his twilight city, one that shifts so quickly between harsh reality and the hazily surreal, with endlessly surprising images. He is obsessed with seemingly unfitting things; apples, crocodiles, water, bodily fluids, bovine creatures, pineapples. The effect is a swampy, drowning land/cityscape somewhere between realities, a shifting, shapechanging world. It is especially true in part three, Streets and Dreams, and yet there is always something concrete, something to cling on to, a connection to the real world, be in a church congregation, a murder, a cemetary. Sometimes the stories inbetween the lines seem obscured by a haze of the history, like hidden Shakespearian tragedies. Sometimes the tragedy of blood and spit and vommit seems disturbingly modern and urban.

Some favourites - The epic "King of Harlem" (starting "With a spoon/He gouged the eyes of the crocodiles out/And spanked the monkeys."), the masquerade feel of "Danza de la Muerte", the submerged world of "Navidad en el Hudson" which brings the river to life in all its murky glory (one of a handful of poems populated by sailors and harbours), "Panorama ciego de Nueva York", a airier, lighter picture of the city, "Lovers murdered by a partridge", a prose poem in written as a fiery dialogue, "Luna y panorama de los insectos" a moonlit poem that encapsulates a lot of what makes Lorca's writing unique, and the finale, "The poet arrives in Havana", a poem full of beats and repetitions and rhythms very different from the murky world he's left behind.

Yerma isn't for everyone. It is dense, difficult and some of the poems are long-winded, the imagery going round in circles. It is a tiring experience. But the surprises on every corner make Yerma a truly fascinating journey, through language and through New York and beyond. 8

Algunos poemas de Poeta en Nueva York se me revelaron solo en una estrofa o en unos pocos versos. Es difícil entenderlo a Lorca siempre. Él se esconde a través de metáforas inexpugnables, cuyos significados parecen apuntar en varias direcciones. Bueno, se esconde y no. Las palabras siguen estando allí, para quien pueda entenderlas. Ese acto de mostrarse y no, de decir en difícil, me gusta mucho. Especialmente cuando el poeta tiene suficiente lucidez y su mente es capaz de juntar palabras desde rincones muy alejados por primera vez en cientos de años. Maldita guerra.

Chicos, no intentemos "Poeta en Nueva York" en casa. Es muy difícil. Y por último, nos puede salir mierda si antes no hemos escrito lo suficiente. O no, quién sabe. Rompamos la poesía. ¿Total?

Son contadas las veces que no me gusta un libro de poesía. Este libro no me atrapó en ningún momento y sinceramente no me hizo experimentar nada.

Me decidí por leer este porque por un chico que citó una parte que me gustó, además leí sobre el autor y según fue bastante reconocido, pero siento que perdí el tiempo así que definitivamente no merece alta puntuación.

Sin embargo acepto todo tipo de recomendaciones, sobre todo de poesía.

C'est un abandon pour moi... ça avait pourtant tellement bien commencé ! J'ai beaucoup aimé Yerma, je ne m'attendais à comprendre aussi bien ! Un récit féministe et engagé qui m'a plu... mais arrivée à la deuxième partie, Poeta en Nueva York : pas moyen de comprendre le sens de ce que je lisais. J'ai essayé de m'accrocher parce que ça reste une belle langue mais lire une mélodie ne sert pas à grand chose si cette mélodie ne nous touche pas :)

Poema surrealistas repletos de metáforas sinestésicas. Paisagens dinâmicas e descrições da oxidação metropolitana. Não consegui perceber a ponta de um corno e nem consigo ver beleza nos poemas, entre gatos que comem sapos e milhares de ayayays só me restou confusão sobre o que é que Lorca queria dizer (ou esconder?).

Yerma un 3, non me disgustou pero sen máis, aínda que sempre entra unha traxedia lorquiana, esta vez relacionada co desexo de ser nai.

Poeta en NY un 2 (non é para min): non o entendo, aínda que relendo algún fragmento que marcara collinlle máis gusto. Quizais só preciso ler máis poesía e recrearme máis nas imaxes que suscita.

A edición que teño tamén ten uns debuxos de Lorca xulísimos 10/10.

Siento el dolor del deseo de Yerma cuando leo este drama de Lorca. Me ha gustado, sí, y creo que todas hemos sido Yerma alguna vez; oscilando entre la esperanza y el deseo. No obstante, prefiero "la casa de Bernarda Alba" o "Bodas de sangre".
