I Hate Your Guts

Rate this book
This New York Times bestselling author may hate your guts, but you’ll be laughing too hard to care in this blisteringly funny collection.

What do Steve Martin, The Reverend Al Sharpton, and Dr. Phil have in common? Jim Norton hates their guts. In his deviant pseudo-memoir Happy Endings, Norton delivered his uncensored and controversial brand of humor on everything from his affinity for hookers to his romantic woes. Now, he unflinchingly spews his thoughts on everyone from the bully he despises from high school, to Hillary Clinton and Al Sharpton.

Offensive, brutally honest, and most important, sidesplittingly hilarious, I Hate Your Guts features 35 essays showcasing the candid, outrageous brand of dirty comedy that has earned him legions of devoted fans both on the radio and on the road.

Just not for me. I officially give up. I have tried to read two of Norton's books, but I couldn't get far into either one. I love comedy and comedians and I understand that a lot of great humor is borne of rage and anger. Norton, however, just seems disturbed and nasty. This did not strike me as funny, it was merely hateful and mean spirited, as if a truly vile internet troll was given a book contract. Norton's stand up has always been hit or miss, but something dies when it is put on the page.

Very rarely do I stop reading a book because I didn't like it. This just isn't my humor. I started reading it because when I picked it up and opened it to the middle of the book, there was an essay about the East Brunswick Square Mall. I wouldn't recommend this one.

Very few mediums make me laugh out loud, as this book did. If you have a liberal (not in a political manner) sense of humor you'll get a bunch of laughs out of this book. If you're easily offended, then as Jim would probably say, go stick a carrot up your ass, you oversensitive douche.

While I enjoy Jim Norton's juvenile and irreverent comedy on TV and in the movies, I don't recommend this book. At times, this book can be funny and I found myself agreeing with a few of his reasonable points. After reading the first 90 pages of this book, I found most of it to be overly-harsh and needlessly profane to the point where I could no longer enjoy reading it. I chuckled every once in a while, but it just isn't funny enough to keep me reading til the end. I haven't read his other book (Happy Endings), so maybe that one is a better read.

I thought it was another funny Jim Norton book but it lacked personal experiences and anecdotes.
The ranting went on a bit too long and way too much was referring to the people who commented on Dom Imus nappy headed ho's debacle. Which i frankly couldn't care less about. Talk about easy targets. Where was Jim complaining when a similar thing happened to Anthony Cumia?

It's Jim Norton. He's vulgar. There were parts that had me laughing hysterically... but he's much better in his stand-up routine.

You know that Patton Oswalt bit about the robot that's programmed only to hate. It's like that character came to life and wrote a book.

Comedic vitriol mixed with lots of cussing and masturbation. A few laugh out loud moments, but definitely not for everyone.

In thirty-five essays, Jim Norton entertains readers with his own "emotional vomiting" on all of the people he detests. You definitely need to be current with pop culture, or have the ability to google individuals (I needed to wikipedia a few) in order to understand Norton's references. Some of the individuals that made Norton's "I hate your guts" list are the following: Heather Mills, Reverend Al Sharpton, Starbucks employees, Steve Martin, Hillary Clinton, John Sterling (I had to google him), Al Roker, Dr. Phil, Keith Olbermann, K-Fed, and Jesse Jackson. At the end of each chapter, Norton gives suggestions on how these individuals can redeem themselves in his eyes. This books is NOT for the easily offended! Norton is blunt and so brutally honest in this book....However on more than one occasion, he met the people in this book that he complains about, and didn't have the GUTS to say anything. I love being entertained by a comedian as much as the next person, and Norton is funny. However, in a book about hating other's guts, one would think Norton would have the guts to be as painfully fun as he is in the book to the people he bashes to their faces...I have enjoyed his segments on Jay Leno, and his few movie appearances; however, I am not sure I would read another one of his books.

Being a long-time adamant fan of Jim Norton's unique style of offensive, repulsive comedy, I was very excited about reading his sophomore effort published only a year after his bestselling debut book. In the simplest of terms, it is more of the same ol' same ol', but focusing on different subject matter. While the original, 'Happy Endings: Tales of a Meaty Breasted Zilch', focuses more inward for Norton, the sequel is more of a collection of essays about people, and entities, Jim just can't stand. All of the belligerents, for one reason or another, piss him off to no end. And while Jim still takes a good amount of pleasure tooling on himself for long periods of time, it is little in comparison to how much he can enjoy giving a good thrashing to some public figures that some of us bite our tongues at as well. No 'douche' is spared in Jim's tell-all of actors, politicians, radio personalities, activists, security guards, iPhones, and other figures he despises. Worth your time if you're a fan of no-holds-barred, edgy comedy like myself. Disclaimer: this book is not for everyone. If you are offended by profane language, dark humor, or easily grossed out this one not might suit your liking. But if you love to laugh and can handle some adult/tasteless banter give this one a couple of days read.

A warning. Not for everyone. Probably offensive for most. But you have to get past the junior high school* level humor. It's almost become cliche, but many comedians seem to be in a great deal of pain underneath the outrageous behavior. This is clearly the case here. But I also get the idea that Jim would punch me in the nose (or lower) if I suggested this theory to him. Enough here for a team of 24 hour therapists. I'm also omitting the most important part. A great deal of the book is howlingly funny. Gasping for air, doubled over, mucus spraying funny. He eviscerates all the pompous, full of themselves phonies that seem to dominate the media today..... The most recent Mrs. Paul McCartney. Need I say more. Touching and funny, with a couple of flat spots. Well worth it. Just remember, you've been warned. ...(*They tell me today it's called "middle school", probably the efforts of someone selling new signage).

One of the top 3 funniest books I have ever read. After reading Jim Norton's first book, 'Happy Endings', I didn't think he would be able to top it in his sophomore release. I was proven wrong instantly and thousands of New York City subway riders can attest to how hard I laughed. A few of them probably thought I had been heavily NO2'd at the dentist.

Ah little Jimmy is hilarious as usual. I found myself laughing out loud more than once reading this. It is definitely not for people easily offended, but if you like your humor to be completely inappropriate I recommend reading this book.

Cover to cover, I laughed so hard I nearly cracked a rib. Jim Norton is one of the funniest comics out there, and this book is just punchline after punchline. Brilliantly funny, so long as you're not offended easily.

I'm not familiar with this guy at all, but his absolutely no-holds-barred criticism of certain celebrities and organizations is amusing (if mean-spirited? or just honest?!? Full of filthy language, so not recommended for the faint-of-heart, the prim-and-proper, or impressionable youths.

Very funny book, never a dull moment. However, I feel that if I had no knowledge of pop culture it would have been a little less enjoyable. But even if someone doesn't get the jokes the insults on their own will make you laugh.

A good follow up to Happy Endings. If you're a fan of the Opie and Anthony show then you know most of Mr. Norton's viewpoints. My favorite chapters were the ones that gave insight to a young Jimm Nordon.

As much as I didn't enjoy "Happy Endings", I absolutely loved this book. I laughed my arse off. It was hilarious and I found myself agreeing with much of the commentary, especially the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame chapters.

I adore lil' Jimmy's work on O+A, his Tweets and his acting. But something was lost here. He's not a bad writer but I found the book was all vehemence with very little content. I still want to read Happy Endings.

I loved the way Jim Norton just tore so many people a new asshole in this book. It had some very funny parts that had me laughing like a schoolgirl. I suppose I'm a little partial to his works because I am a fan of just about anything he does.
