Rate this book
Pythagoras, known to us primarily for the Pythagorean theorem that bears his name, was a Greek mathematician and philosopher. He was interested not only in math but made advances in astronomy, music, physical science, medicine, and many other areas as well. This authoritative volume shows that Pythagoras still has the power to inform and inspire a life lived for the love of knowledge.

Pythagoras was a very intelligent and keen Greek figure that lived in a Greek island named Samos to very noble parents. The thinker lived before the famed philosophers, Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle when the old, dated people were called Pre-Socratics. The period where Pythagoras lived was before what we call Greece's classical period, "Classical period figures like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle dominate our concept of ancient Greek thought. Not as recognizable are the thinkers who laid the groundwork for these more well-known philosophers. These thinkers, many of who lived 200 years before Plato, are the called the Pre-Socratics. One of these Pre-Socratics was Pythagoras" (Karamanides 6). Besides, Pythagoras was a hard core avid learner during his epoch and pursued his knowledge to a great extent. The mathematician implored his merchant father to go on commercial excursions to learn about what is life like. According to these two reasons, Pythagoras was an influential figure to everyone.

To begin, Pythagoras, subjectively, could have been an omniscient human being if he lived in this generation. Further, Pythagoras professed in a large variety of fields. He was a mathematician, philosopher, physicist, cosmologist, and astronomer, "During his lifetime, Pythagoras' pursuit of knowledge ranged across subjects as different as the gods and planets, to numbers, diet, and music. Pythagoras was more than a mathematician; he was also a philosopher, musician, and religious leader." (Karamanides 8). During the top-notcher's course of life, Pythagoras acquired a relatively premature education thanks to his excessive alacrity of learning. When the physicist was 18, he was Thales' student, Thales was a very charismatic and insightful teacher that schooled many philosophical prospects, Pythagoras also sailed to Egypt to advance his knowledge. According to this sea of reasons, Pythagoras has a next-level mind.

Pythagoras was a bright thinker that strove for expanding his knowledge to another level. Pythagoras went to countries that were east of Greece. Babylonia and Egypt were very sophisticated in terms of sciences, "During Pythagoras' lifetime, a new scientific age was dawning in Greece. In Egypt, Babylon, and other nations east of Greece, however, similar advances in mathematics, physics, astronomy, and geometry had been made centuries earlier. Greeks considered Egypt to be the birthplace of mathematics." (Karamanides 22). There is a huge historical misconception that Pythagoras created a new mathematical method. The Pythagorean Theorem was in fact invented by the Babylonian not Pythagoras, that is what made the eastern empires rise high. According to all these reasons and examples, the eastern empires were very developmental.

To end, I would like to recommend this book for two reasons. This book is something that improves your knowledge on how sciences were discovered and created. "These philosophers belonged to what we now call Greece's classical period, which lasted from approximately 500 to 300 B.C." (Karamanides 6). Another reason why I would like to recommend this book is because it informs readers how philosophy sophisticated. Plato, Socrates, Aristotle and Thales were great minds, they developed sciences, especially philosophy. For these two reasons, this book is worth reading.

Most know the name but I suspect they know next to nothing about him. In fact, little is known with any certainity. Records are sparse.

He influenced math, music, religion, cosmology. Perhaps he was the starting point of these studies.

Too bad more wasn't known.

Interesting read.

I really liked this kids' book that not even kids are supposed to like. Pythagoras had really interesting connections to my own religion, centuries apart.
