After being let down a bit by the prior novel which had some good ideas but awkward pacing, Planet Robobot delivers probably the most exciting Kirby novel yet. This is the first of the novels directly based on one of the games (and I haven't played the Robobot game yet to compare) so I was kind of worried there'd be stuff that only made sense if I'd played the game or that a game plot wouldn't work well translated into a novel, but this is really solid with a surprisingly compelling adventure and lots of great moments.
The plotline kicks off with a really exciting opener that hooks you instantly, and the developments and revelations feel a bit more dramatic than in previous stories. This is the first of the plots that really seems to threaten the entire planet, and features the most willfully malicious evil scheme yet. Hartman and Suzy are probably my favorite villains of the series so far, Suzy in particular has such a sassiness and sarcasm that makes her really fun. We also get some of the best Kirby transformation scenes, there's a great chunk in the middle where Kirby turns his armor into a racecar that he can't quite control and the chaos of him zipping around is hilarious, and that's almost instantly followed by "Doctor Kirby" who, unlike other transformations, takes on a new persona and Kirby's fresh attitude is comedy gold.
Language-wise this was the easiest of the books for me so far. It's been about a month and a half since the last prose novel I finished and I spent that time basically cramming as much manga as possible and I was surprised how much faster it felt coming back to a normal book. I think prose in general is easier for me than manga since you have fuller sentences with more grammatical structure and I was surprised how fast I tore through the first few chapters. There are a couple of quirks, roboticized characters tend to speak in Katakana so it took a minute of "What the hell is シマス?" before I realized what a silly question that is. I also never quite got a read on what the exact translation of ゲンジュウ民 or if it's even a real Japanese word, since all the results I got from searching it were Kirby related, but I still got from context that it basically meant something like "unwashed savages" or simple folk that the bad guys looked down on. Speaking of context, I found myself grokking previously unseen words from context a lot better than previously which was nice (I still added them to anki of course). This volume was a lot of fun and I think the letdown of volume 6 was hopefully just a fluke, I'm looking forward to getting back into the Kirby books and seeing how fast I am by the time I've finished them all.
