Al McNair is a theatre professor who quit teaching without a back up plan. He became a PI on a lark and it turned out he was good. In Hog Butcher Al travels to Chicago to help an old acquaintance with a production of Macbeth. The actor playing the lead role died in an accident and Al was called to step in last minute. When Al gets to Chicago, he looks into the accident that took the lead actor's life. Pairing up with a local detective and a non-traditional computer expert, Al embarks on a search for a killer who is settling a score fifteen years in the making.
Andrew (Drew) Sutherland is an Actor, Educator, Amateur Chef, Author, Theatre Artist, and all around Dogsbody. He is father to Eleanore, Joseph, and Samuel. He lives in Sacramento, California and hopes to someday own an English Bulldog.
I was going to give it 4 stars but then I reconsidered. First of all, I ignored the bad editing because this book kept my interest. I believe this book was too long and could have been finished by Chapter 80. What happened to the main characters could have been shown in one chapter. I did not want to know what food the characters ate when they visited Al's parents. Therefor, it should have been cut. After all my criticism, I would still recommend this book because it is fun to read.
I really liked that this was set in Chicago and especially the Chicago theater scene having worked in that industry for a while. The characters were very well developed and engaging in their stories. I liked that there was enough background and story to keep it engaging and making me want to read. I recommend this to anyone who likes murder mysteries and fast past crime drama.
What a wonderful, funny, intense drama thriller. Being I was apart of the acting scene in high school, I know how some people can be jerks or divas in the theater world even amateur. In a way I feel Eric's vengeance was justified to an extent. In the matter of right and wrong you got to look at the big picture, who was really guilty? Why was the judge more wrong in judgment than his job required? Why was Eric's innocence lost? Why was there no real justice for the slain family, and the heart broken husband? So many questions and there wasn't one reasonable explanation as to why all the people involved were meant to be punished was just. No matter what Al thought of Eric's motives, Al's motives were no more just or judgeful than Eric's. Everybody in the story had there demons and hangups, and all the dead and surviving characters had some shady shit going on in their lives. All the illegal talk and tax issues, yea nobody was 100% legit if you ask me. Well this was an great read and a memorable storyline. I will never forget our senior highschool trip was to see Macbeth, so this was a trip down memory lane for sure!
Sutherland delivers again with the 3rd in the Al McNair series! If you like action/detective books with great characters and witty dialogue then jump on board, because Hog Butcher delivers. I recommend starting with The Girl That Care Forgot. This series is a fun read!!
Seriously more than good book. I did not want it to end or say goodby to al and all the others. It was a free download but if I could I would buy it and any followups. More more more and THANKS.
