Whether you are looking for travel guides or books about science topics, DK has the very best books, hands down. They present difficult subject in such a way that even young people can grasp the basics and are not only entertained but engrossed by it. DK also understands that time honored adage that "A picture is worth a thousand words" and they make certain that their text is liberally accompanied by the most beautiful pictures that you can imagine. All in all, any DK book that I have ever purchased, and I have purchased over 45, has been a true pleasure and never a disappointment.

If you love dogs and want to find out why they are so interesting then you should check out the book Dogs. This book is full with information from how dogs evolved to how they watch tv now days. There are many new interesting facts that I learned from this book. What really amazed me about this book was all the different races their are in the k-9 family. My favorite dog from this book is the German Sheaperd because they are smart playful and love to rum and have fun. So if you want to find out which is your favorite dog then read this book!

The earliest example of domestication was found when the skeleton of a woman was dug up and she was said to have had her “hand resting on her dog.” (pg 35) Eyewitness: Dog is an informational book featuring information on all things dog. Ever wondered what makes a dog a dog? Or what characteristics make a dog ideal for hunting? Eyewitness: Dog answerers those questions and even includes a guide to help you identify any dog you come across.

I give Eyewitness: Dog 2 stars. There were only two pages throughout the whole book that I could read without yawning. Reading this book is equivalent to listening to a small child tell a story. All you hear is “and then this happened and this happened oh and this happened” and you have to find the original main point on your own. Each page is full of pictures, which is crucial within informational books and there are a few that are labeled. The pictures that aren't labeled either tell a quick historical fact, give an example, or are irrelevant. On the page that features domestication there is a small section that talks about ancient greeks using flowers to treat people bitten by dogs with rabies. The only information I have retained is simply all canid dogs descended from wolves. Perhaps my harsh critique is biased because I am not the biggest fan of dogs.

As a future teacher I don’t think I will use this book for students to find information. The text is overly complicated. I wish that it was as simple as naming a breed of dog and listing fun facts about them.

I was really pleased with this book as it proved very informative and engaging. The book offers a history of the species from ancient times to present, both in a scientific and social context which will prove interesting reading for any animal lover! It is largely written in easy to understand language and includes a full Glossary of topic-specific language contained in the book which is very helpful.

As a "read" there is no consistent narrative and is instead presented as a short passage of text on each double-page spread, supported by smaller chunks of text which offer interesting facts. These facts are presented in an interesting way, and the book contains many pictures (both photos, illustrations, and diagrams) which are clearly and informatively labelled. This book was a great introduction to or way to find out more about the topic. The delivery of the text in smaller sections makes it easy to read but also inspires further research (through more in-depth books or online) into those parts which interest a reader most (I was most interested in the information about dogs in art throughout history).

I can see this being a great resource for children interested in dogs and definitely wouldn't bore an adult reading with them. For an adult looking for more specific information (such as dog care, or the history of certain breeds) a more in-depth book would be more appropriate. However, this is a great introduction for the target age group of this book!

This series is for children moving to the next step up (age and comprehension) from the "100 facts" series and would appeal to children who like grazing for trivia and books they can come back to in bursts again and again.
There is more detail in the information and it's packed in tighter. It would be difficult to read cover to cover in one sitting as the information isn't presented in a narrative style - like the "100 facts", the information is in the pictures and captions, so more of a "browse for fun" title where you may find information useful in a report; looking for very specific information to use in a report may be more difficult.

I love this series. It always includes great photos and interesting facts. I learned a lot about dogs’ ancestors (wolves), other canine species, and species that get confused for dogs. I also learned a little about the most distinct European animal breeds and what traits they were bred for. While overall an enjoyable read, I found the book a little more repetitive than other books in the series. I also felt it focused mostly on western dogs’ hunting background and neglected to tell about dogs’ wider and more diverse roles in history.

Genre: This nonfiction book would be classified as an informational nonfiction because it provides students with a variety of facts about many different breeds of dogs.

Target Audience: The target audience of this nonfiction book is likely students in intermediate grades (3-6). I believe this would be for older students because the vocabulary used might be difficult for younger students as well as the size and amount of text on each page.

I paired this book with the novel "Because of Winn Dixie" by Kate DiCamillo. These two texts can be considered "twin texts" because the story line of "Because of Winn Dixie" focused on a friendship between a young girl and her new-found dog. If teaching the novel "Because of Winn Dixie" I would provide students with books such as "Eyewitness Dog" so that they had the opportunity to learn more about the type of dog in the novel as well as dogs they might have at home. This would give the students the chance to connect the novel with their own life, sparking interest in the subject area for them.

OK I know these are supposed to be kid books but they are awesome! Great pictures and just enough text to make you want to learn more. Great choices for a beginning history reader or to start an older reader out in a new area. Every time I pick one of these up and read it I learn new things. Highly Recommended
