A wonderful nature journal of the wildlife in the Undercliff nature reserve situated in South Devon along a section of the south west coastal path. Elaine Franks is one of my favourite illustrators. Her pictures accompanied by nature facts creates a lovely picture of life in the Undercliff.
This is a beautiful sketchbook of the flora and fauna on the Undercliff nature reserve, which runs from Lyme Regis to Axmouth. The illustrations are vibrant and amazingly detailed, the book is well laid-out, with a map to show which areas on the walk that each double spread of pages refers to. It's a lovely coffee table book, for leisurely dipping in once in a while. It inspired us to do part of the Undercliff walk, and I look forward to doing the full hike soon.
Definitely a book that can be read multiple times. I found myself reading this once for the information and knowledge (text), and again for just enjoying the art, and again for actually evaluating the art (how did she accomplish this effect?), and again to actually pay attention to the composition of the pieces.
