Just like riding my bike, the freedom I get from deciding if one night should turn into two, or if a number should be deleted altogether, is thrilling.
I've never been dishonest about what my expectations are.
What's new for me is being the one ghosted.
So imagine my surprise when the girl who decided I wasn't enough shows up on my doorstep burdened with the consequences of her own lies and deceit.
Marie James is a mother of two boys and wife of 17 years. She's spent most of her life lifetime living in central Texas, with only short stays in South Carolina, Alabama, and Florida. Her passions include reading everything under the sun and sewing, although she doesn't get to sew much these days!.
Writing has always been a passion and she's enjoying every step of the journey!
This amazing story had me on the edge of my seat and my heart squeezed in a vice until the very last moment. But oh what a great story it was.
I have been falling in love with the Cerberus MC men since the very first introduction in Kincaid. With each story I love them more and a new member is vying for my favorite spot. Shadow was no different.
Morrison "Shadow" Griggs has been in an on again, off again physical relationship with Misty Bowen for months. They met in book one of this series when a mission the MC was on brought the two together. It was fun, and then Shadow left. The next time they were together was pretty much the same. Only this time Misty won't get out of Shadow's head. When she goes ghost on him, he's baffled by not only her disappearing act but also why he suddenly cares after years spent never getting attached to a woman. When Misty suddenly shows up at his door with a secret, Shadow's world is irrevocably changed.
I couldn't get enough of the emotions in this book. The chemistry between Shadow and Misty was off the charts, even when they were angry with each other, the pull was there. The guilt and anxiety felt by Misty was real, and the feelings of rejection and hopelessness were heartbreaking. Shadow made this amazing transition from manwhore to caring, considerate, dedicated one woman guy and while the transition was slow, the journey was one of the best parts of the book.
This is book 3 of this series, and they are all just mind blowing and hook you from the beginning. Marie James knows how to write a leading man who makes you wish for one of your own just like her characters and she writes leading ladies that show strength even in their moments of weakness. I loved this book and cannot wait for the next Cerberus MC man to experience their HEA.
Shadow was somewhat of an ass and I didn't see his love for Misty really shine. I get that he was mad at her for keeping her pregnancy a secret, but then he wants the baby to have a DNA test done, to me that didn't really scream romance haha
Misty annoyed me, I wish she had abit more of a backbone, she allowed Shadow to use her too many times for my liking and when she finally does move out, that lasts 2 days once Shadow drops I love you shes over it all. Her inner monologue came off as strong but her actions weren't.
Ended up DNFing at 25%. Really disliked both MCs and struggled with the writing and the editing. This is the second Marie James book I DNFd. Wanted to give her another try with my favorite trope, but still just didn’t work for me.
I honestly don't understand how this book is getting 5 stars? Spoilers ahead I guess
It's an okay book but nothing over 3 stars. Worse than the other 2 in the series so far.
This book just reads as misogynistic women hating women BS to me.
- Someone lying about being on birth control and not wanting to handle the consequences of it - Family attempting to force an abortion on a young woman and kicking her out when she refuses - Everyone at the clinic being creepy and making the young woman uncomfortable - Someone being pressured into giving up their baby instead of being in therapy to deal with all these life changes - A woman lying to man and not attempting to contact him for nine months while pregnant - A man treating women like shit even though the book narrative constantly keeps telling us how much they respect and cherish women. - A douchey man child who refuses to treat the mother of his child with respect even though he keeps repeating how much he just wants to be with her. - Man child having sex with her again and then refusing to speak with her and communicate issues after. - Treating casual sex differently between men and women (It's totally fine for men to have as much casual sex as the want, but any women characters that enjoy female sex are whores and manipulative bitches) - Treating other women as less than because they enjoy casual sex and making these characters the villains of the story
There's nothing wrong with casual sex or abortions and this type of thinking just brings on shame and guilt. As long as all parties involved are consenting it shouldn't be shamed and abortions are a medical procedure.
There were much better ways the story of dealing with an accidental pregnancy could have been handled instead of this book full of lying, manipulation, and anger. Hell even just making it that she was struggling to deal with her pregnancy on her own because she didn't think Shadow would be supportive and him coming back into town and finding out about the pregnancy on accident would have been a better start to this story.
2.5 Stars Shadow is the VP for the MC. We knew he was hung up on Misty, a girl he’s hooked up with on two separate missions, and at the end of Kid she shows up with a baby in tow. I didn’t love this one. I had a REALLY hard time with Misty and her decisions. I was annoyed how long Shadow took to get it together, and I didn’t feel any genuine chemistry.
My biggest obstacle was that the author gave us all these shitty facts, then tried to brush them away, but I needed them addressed/fleshed out. If that’s not bad enough, she a total doormatty clinger begging for any scraps she can get.
The problem is that none of this is really explored, so while Shadow is denying his feelings doing the push/pull thing… I got zero feels. IMO, she missed a huge opportunity to have an angsty fest of betrayal, hurt feelings and trying to reconcile for the kid. Instead, we got an ex-manwhore who’s an awesome dad with commitment issues. Until he doesn't then it's a race to the finish line.
Totally random, but does anyone else think everyone’s ass-sucking of Emmalyn is annoying AF?? She reminds me of the gal from Terri Anne Browning’s The Rocker series, and coincidentally enough…her name was Em too. OMG, we get it Kincaid you love her… she shits 🌈’s. I almost lost it when he’s scolding Shadow for his baby mama just showing up when Em is struggling to have a baby, and imagine how that makes her feel…what?? Also, he rips into Snapper, (which I loved) but only because she insulted his precious Em, not for the shit she pulled last book, but for insinuating the bros don’t want Em around.
Potential issues- Timeline wise this follows Kid’s book, but it’s jumpy. She arrives with c-section stapples and a newborn, but he’s grinning and babbling and saying dadada in no time. Has several months past, or is it just inaccurate baby development?
Bottom Line- Ok, but I skimmed some, because I never really cared about them. It felt like they were together because Misty didn’t have any other options, and liked having sex with Shadow. And Shadow thought it was the right thing to do, and liked having sex with Misty. Shadow’s parts were not exciting, but at least felt more authentic as he grappled with the new commitments and struggled with his feelings…but it dragged on and on, and became 😴😴. These are easy reads, but this one was about 100 pages longer, and I felt it.
Shadow aka Morrison is a confirmed bachelor who just wants no strings attached sex. Fast forward to Misty getting pregnant and not telling him. He’s pissed at her, which I get, but from day one he’s an awesome dad, which I liked. However, he was an ass to Misty for far too long. It wasn’t until towards the end of the book that he finally comes around and admits he loves her. Misty annoyed me because she was a total push over where Shadow was concerned. And he took advantage of that. I did feel that he redeemed himself by the end but I wish it hadn’t been so long in coming. I really appreciated how patient and loving he was with her through the whole adoption crisis and that he didn’t turn against her or blame her. I enjoyed Shadow’s relationship with his sister Bri. They were typical siblings who loved each other but got on one another’s nerves.
I’ve gotta be totally honest here: in some ways Misty was really strong. She endured being kicked out and disowned by her family, giving birth, and traveling to find Shadow all on her own. But when it came to Shadow she was so weak. She allowed him to use her repeatedly. I mean, he’d ignore her for weeks then come to her room drunk and she’d welcome him to her bed. How insulting to her, but she let him disrespect her like that. Also, it ticked me off that she never let him know about her pregnancy and had no intention of ever telling him. I understand that she thought he wouldn’t care, but it turns out that he did, very much so. They were basically strangers who had sex and unfortunately I didn’t feel like they’d really gotten to know each other as individuals throughout the book.
A side note, Kinkaid annoyed me, as he did in the previous book, with his non stop, over the top, stars in his eyes obsessive love for Em. We get it; you guys love each other. Let’s move on, please. 3 1/2 stars. I would’ve given it 4 stars if it hadn’t taken Shadow so long to pull his head out of his behind.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I was looking forward to Shadow’s book because I liked him in the first two but he was nothing like I thought he would be. He was the biggest asshole to Misty and I didn’t think he deserved her at all. Yes she got pregnant and didn’t tell him but it didn’t warrant the way he treated her for most of the book. The only thing I’ll give him credit for is that he was a good dad to Griffin. Other than that he was one of my least favorite male characters out of all the books I’ve ready (and there have been many). I liked Misty, except for the fact that she let him treat her like shit for so long. If that was me I wouldn’t have kept allowing him back in my bed. The whole “my body betraying me” thing is one of my biggest pet peeves in a romance novel. Have some self respect. I wish Shadow was portrayed in this book like he was in the others as a caring, loyal guy. I probably would have liked him then. Also there’s a sex scene with him and another woman and he basically eye fucks someone across the bar, thinking about leaving with her while he waits for Misty to get off work...who happens to be ten feet away from him. So yeah there’s the “hero” for you.
Shadow is a single happy go lucky guy and a has variety of women. He meets Misty on a mission and they spend the night. He takes her number so he can text her thinking they could have a hookup when ever he dropped into to town. But when she starts to ignore his text's, he begins to think that may be something is wrong. Misty has decided she had better break contact with Shadow, she hadn't been truthful to him and her parents had disowned her for her folly, and she now has to plan her life on her own. Life gets worse though and she needs help, desperately, her only choice is Shadow. Can he ever forgive Misty for the lies? will he step up to the plate? I'm enjoying this series very much. Shadow is a great addition and a must read. It was great to see characters from previous stories make an appearance and they added substance and fluency to a great story. I highly recommend this book!
I don't really like shadow.I think he it's very empty like I know this is a MC book but he act so indifferent. I don't love the relationship, so it's not my favorite.
Shadow treated that girl like pure garbage, I really couldn’t get over the way he spoke to her and how he just used her. And the whole “I’m not good with my words” thing got old real quick. The romance in this book was subpar like I definitely was rooting against this couple, homegirl deserved better. I skipped almost all the sex scenes because it made me feel used after reading it lol, like this book made me mad hahaha
This had to be the best one yet to read of this series loved it at the end I was wondering what happened it didn't explain and the thankfully it told everything. These men and women you feel there emotions it's so good
This amazing story had me on the edge of my seat and my heart squeezed in a vice until the very last moment. But oh what a great story it was.

This is a MC book which I love, it is book 3 in the series but I feel can be read as a standalone. This contains love, sex and MC life but first that I've ever read that doesn't contain violence.
This book focuses on Shadow and Misty. She's a young 21 year old, where Shadow is 33. Quite an age difference but this doesn't bother me and if I'm honest, at times I forget how old Shadow is! This story is a little different to what I've ever read in an MC book and that makes a refreshing change. I won't go into details as it would be a major spoiler.
The author made this book easy to read and personally I was hooked from page one. It's told from two points of view which I prefer. The story centres on these two characters who clearly love each other but don't do anything about it. Everyone else can see their love but them. Difficult times force them to open up to each other.
This book stirred all sorts of emotions for me, sadness, hurt, anger and rage; there were times when I felt like screaming at the book and times when I could have cried for Misty. I loved her instantly, I loved shadow also but at times he really infuriated me. I'm finding it difficult to go further into the book because I just don't see how I can without ruining it for other readers. There doesn't seem to be a way around me outlining the story without spoilers, but honestly I loved this book. I've got the first two to read now and I will be reading them next.
You really need to read this whole Cerberus MC series. Each book just keeps getting better and better. I could not put this book down. Shadow is a guy who doesn't plan on settling down or having kids until misty shows up at his door. You will hate him, love him and even want to slap him. I really felt for Misty, she has gone through some tough situations and it's stuff that happens in real life so it gets you mad, sad, and happy. I wanted to shake some sense into her at times. You read about characters from the other books so you catch up on whats happening with them. Kincaid is book 1, then Sindicate is book 1.5, Kid is book 2 and this book Shadow is book 3. Marie James is just awesome at what she does and never dissapoints
I'm going to say it - I hated Shadow for most of the book. Nothing about him in the beginning screamed book boyfriend - more like donkey's a$$. The way he continually treated Misty was deplorable and I actually hoped she would move on. My heart hurt for the choices forced upon Misty. I knew the one was going to cause issues and I swear I stopped breathing for a moment when a decision was first rendered.
My biggest complaint is the person that caused some issues in Kid's book tried again in this book and is still there!!!!
See strong emotions - for that it's a five star read.
1 star because there's outside the relationship sex, and I always give supposed romance books 1 star if they have cheating or outside the relationship sexual content at all. It's gross and disturbing to read and doesn't belong in a romance. At least warn us so we can choose not to read something like that. It was otherwise pretty good but the OW stuff ruined it.
Ive just been devouring this series the past couple of days, I honestly don't know how I didn't continue to read this series when I read the first book about a year ago! Onto Dom's story! :) Definitely recommend this series to anyone! (Although,
I loved Shadow and Misty's story. Misty pulled so many feeling to the surface. She made so many mistakes, but she made them first out of fear and then out of love. She was a completely believable and lovable heroine. Shadows initial anger is completely understandable. But when it really matters he comes through. Great story!
This author loves for me to cry. This story had such passion. It also makes you feel like everything the characters feel you do to. Very well written and I am now addicted to this series.
When we fall in love we want more and more right? So it's perfectly normal that when we love an author we want more books to read and I was eager to have another book from the fantastic Marie James. "Shadow" is the 3rd book from the "Cerberus Mc Series" and like the other books in this series is breathtaking, in a good way of course. This book revolves around "Shadow" the VP of Cerberus Mc and "Misty" and the whole book is switched between their points of views. "Shadow" is a free and wild biker who does not want commitments. For him what matters is one-night stands, with no strings attached or promises. Life for him was not easy, because during his military career he experienced a lot of tragedy. Now he wants to party with his companions. "Misty" is a finalist from the university, a future pre-school teacher, she was raised in the bosom of a very religious family with high standarts and convictions. When she meets "Shadow" something in her change and make her want more, but she knows that it won’t happen, simply because "Shadow" isn't a stay at home guy. A big lie will rock their world, i mean really change everything, you'll see. When she finds herself abandoned and rejected by those who should protect and love her unconditionally she is forced to ask help to the one and only "Shadow". Can a lie be forgiven or even forgotten? Can it be justified in the name of love? Will "Shadow", who is not used to forgive, forget? This book, like the others in this series, is breathtaking. I cannot tell you why, because I’m not a spoiler, but I can say that I wasn’t waiting for this unfold. The excitement level of this book is something that will make us rethink seriously the purpose of our lives. The ups and downs, twists and turns had put me on edge and the unknown, not knowing what would happen next raised my anxiety levels to the maximum. “Shadow” is a fantastic and exciting book, I love the fact that the main characters of the other books from this series are involved in this story as well, it's so good to remembre them, to know more about them. Marie James, I had said this in my previous reviews and I already had said to you in a private message but I don’t get tired to repeat that you're a genius, your ability to captivate us with every book you write does not cease to surprise me. The level of emotion and feeling that you put in each book makes us rethink the purpose of our lives and makes us feel like we're part of the story. Thank you so much for this. And now what? What book will you write next? We will have to wait long? I sure hope not because i'm experience a huge book hangover.
I really thought this was going to be better it had all the right stuff… I normally don’t like pregnancy tropes but I thought this was going to go another way… it didn’t…
Misty is young, impulsive, immature, fake and needs too much too soon and the act to get a reaction and the lying inner monologues were annoying!!! She wants to “prove” that she can take care of herself? Really? She couldn’t pull it off in Denver but now Shadow is in the picture she wants to act out about independence? This was almost comical if it wasn’t on repeat… I was begging Shadow meets someone else… she wanted to trap him (no ifs or buts about how that happened, why lie) and after she did… instead of trying to know him, she wants him to jump into a relationship… like oh here’s the baby you didn’t know and he goes down on his knees? You’d think, if she was sincere and needed his help (that’s why she took the bus there) and she acts out? With everyone helping her UGH! Characters like these make me irrationally mad! Like what’s the point? She used him now wants him to declare what? His love for for her? 🙄 and they call it “stubborn?” What a joke… she’s manipulative and impulsive, simple and to the point… Him caring about her is not enough, she wants love after what 3 months? Like what was the point if that little stunt? I wish the conflict was the custody in Colorado but nope!
Shadow, a 32 year old player that didn’t want kids and wanted to play around until he meets Misty and she knows what he wants and she obliges then she traps him… his reaction to this was understandable and it’s to quick…and he got swept up in the crazy love atmosphere in the house with Kincaid and Kid and their women… it was way too soon! That’s why he was torn, rightly so BUT letting a 22 year old manipulate him was dumb AF!!! I just wanted Shafow to be like let’s competent because this was BS…I was ready to DNF… I didn’t and maybe I should have?
3.5 stars....I liked the story but it isn't one that will stay with me. I thought the baby storyline was believable and the H was a typical man when talking about his feelings. But the woman was a bit wishy washy - understandable when making the decisions about being pregnant and having her baby but not understandable concerning her relationship with shadow and what she would out up with in his he treated her.
In this Cerberus MC we continue our story with Shadow and Misty; a love that has taken a turn and is definitely a roller coaster ride. I have loved Shadow since I started this series and personally I wanted just a little more drama if you can imagine and hard nosed play from our main man. I honestly have to say I did not like the preface of this story. Bedding a man and telling him a lie that leads to more than they bargained for …. Nope. Not into that … sorry this hit me wrong.
Shadow is 33 and Misty is 21 – hooking up is the name of the game or was the name of the game. However a one night stand turned into a bigger mess for both characters. The age difference for sure played a role in the deceit … or at least I would hope it did. I just couldn’t get past the preface of how things played out and I don’t want to give it away so I cant really say much. However Misty continuing to weave deception .. .nope .. didn’t like it. Especially the lies she told to the people that were helping her.
I wanted to love this story because I love Shadow – I still love him but I don’t love the story. Im sorry .. I really wanted to. I will continue with this series as I love we get the others we have met all wrapped up in this one as well – thank you for that! However I will have to move on and hope that the next release will allow me to open up to Shadow’s story a little bit more.
Thank you for the ARC! Review to post to Ramblings From Beneath The Sheets.
Shadow is book 3 in Marie James's Cerberus MC series. I'm a big fan of Marie James and this series. After I've read each one I've thought, OK this is my favorite, and with Shadow I felt the same thing. This book is definitely an angsty and emotional story that tore at my heart over and over again.
Shadow is a love'em and leave'em player used to having his pick of willing females wherever his work takes him. Misty is a young college student with very strict religious parents, but her willpower is no match for her strong attraction to Shadow.
After trying to navigate one difficult heartbreaking life choice after another, Misty finds herself out of options and seeking out assistance from Shadow and the Cerberus MC club.
My emotions were all over the place with this book. I felt so bad, my heart broke for Misty who found herself so young and so alone with the weight of life altering decisions. I was so angry at Shadow, but he was open about who and what kind of man he was. And his change was so gradual and organic that I think it even surprised him.
“I pictured myself walking out of that front door. I imagined what walking away from you would be like.” I stroke her cheek with my thumb, hating the way her lip is quivering. “I couldn’t walk away even if it was the best thing for us. I don’t want to walk away from you, Misty. I can't.”
Marie James has become a favorite one-click author for me.
This is a MC book which I love, it is book 3 in the series but I feel can be read as a standalone. This contains love, sex and MC life but first that I've ever read that doesn't contain violence.

I thought this book was better than the previous book but there were enough things that caused me to not enjoy this book. First, and I almost stopped reading at this point but I ended up finishing, was the issue of abortion. I have no problem that it was an option for her but I really hated that the other person that Misty talks to is a girl claiming to have them often and talking about getting a discount for rape. I understand everyone has their own political opinions about abortion but I felt like this author didn't give those that are faced with the decision the respect they deserve and making It seem like women use abortion as a form of birth control when that isn't the case. It seemed like she didn't agree with abortions, and seems to not have wanted her character to have one but instead of Misty making the decision on her own she uses a shady doctor as an excuse. I feel like in all of these books the women are mostly too young and immature for real life situations and perhaps I am just too old to be reading them. I roll my eyes more when these girls break out childish behavior over and over than I actually feel like I'm reading about two people having a connection and building a relationship.
