Charles Dickens Cookbook

Rate this book
Author's note The recipes in this book are intended for those who take pleasure both in food and in the writings of Charles Dickens. Nearly all the dishes described here, although they belonged to the nineteenth-century table, can be cooked and enjoyed today, although some of the recipes have been given for their idiosyncratic and informative value alone. Sometimes ingredients and quantities have been change, although the occasion for alteration rarely arose, in spite of the myth that recipes in the past have called for extraordinary feats on the parts of cooks and household economies. Those oddities that do appear usually do so because of the difference between then and today in what was readily available. I am extremely grateful to the cooks and writers of the last century who troubled to record their recipes, and on whose works I have draw.

I was born on a farm in the Red River Valley of eastern North Dakota, and grew up climbing trees, riding my pony and daydreaming under a wide prairie sky. I left North Dakota after college, and have since lived in Colorado, Minnesota, Iowa, Washington, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and for the past fourteen years, Michigan. I have a Ph.D. in English, and teach part-time in the English Department at the University of Michigan.

I have published two novels, MAVIS (Fawcett-Columbine, 1996) and DAKOTA, OR WHAT'S A HEAVEN FOR (North Dakota Institute for Regional Studies, 2010). I also have published a book of scholarship, TEACHING THE POSTMODERN (Routledge, 1992).

My partner and I live in the country near Ann Arbor, with two horses, two dogs, and one cat. When not writing or teaching, I might be trying to improve my nascent woodworking skills, riding horse, working in my garden, reading, exercising at the gym, listening to opera, or planning trips, some of which I actually take. No matter where I am living or what I am doing, I think of myself as a North Dakotan.

This 1980 cookbook covers lot of recipes for different foods that appear in the novels of the famous Victorian author, Charles Dickens. From soups to desserts Brenda Marshall has gathered little snippets of excerpts from the writings of Dickens to intro the recipes. The book includes many charming black and white drawings, assumedly from the novels cited, but no credit is listed for these. Includes an index of recipes.
