About Leah
Leah was a rebel. She chose to live her life outside the constraints of 19th century English society. She rebuked any parental control and choose to decide her own fate. From England to the Caribbean and then frontier America, she was loved by family and friends yet still had enemies. Sailing the seas with pirates lurking about helped chisel her character as she created a life of her own near the sea.
Explore the scenic countries with Leah and learn of the native cultures and taste their delicacies. As a mixed race female she placed prejudices under her feet and learned to recognize and accept love even if it was against the law.

This is a well written, interesting story of love, life and the heart ache that comes with it. Leah is a woman who leads an interesting, but at times sad life. Readers are lucky to be allowed to follow along on her journey that crosses continents and includes danger as Leah learns to deal with heartache linked to romance in a book that readers are going to enjoy. The author does a great job with this historical romance that has many other genres linked in the pages.
A tale of high adventure. A young girl who goes out and finds and love and excitement on the high seas. Fast paced and kept me interested throughout. Definitely an enjoyable read.
Impeccable Book !!! The creativity that goes into creating these characters truly astounds this reader. This book is one of those ones that suck you in from the beginning and won't let you go. I couldn't put it down for very long.Fantastic Book !!!
This was a fun-filled, fast-paced adventure. The main character, Leah was enjoyable and spirited and I liked following her escapades on the ocean and in search of love.
A great tale of someone overcoming the odds and stepping out of her comfort zone to grow as a person.
Cross-Ties by Carolyn M. Bowen is a 19 Century historical story that spans England and America. Leah is the main character. She has an interesting life. Her father has arranged for her to be married on her 18th birthday, but she cannot tolerate marriage without love. She is in love with someone else, but does he love her? She lives in Antigua, England, and America. Some of the adventures could be better written, some leave questions such as, "what happened? Did they notice that her hair was short?"
I enjoyed reading the story, but I felt that there should have been more explanation or elaboration. Parts of the book left were unexplained or sketchy. But I did enjoy the story.

Wow, what an adventure! Admittedly, I’m usually not a big fan of these kinds of books (I tend to stick to the sci-fi and romance genres) but I decided to give “Cross-Ties” a chance and go into the read with an open mind, and I must say that it turned out to be a great decision. I could see early on, within the first few chapters, that the author is truly talented when it comes to weaving words into stories. The prose flows in a very smooth manner while conveying everything in very vivid way – I personally found it easy to visualize many of the scenes and also empathize and understand the feelings of Leah, the protagonist. I highly recommend ‘Cross-Ties’ to readers looking for a genuinely immersive and adventurous read. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for future releases by Carolyn M. Bowen.
I've been looking for something to read outside of my normal genre. I saw that this book takes place (at least partially) in Antigua and since I've been to that beautiful island before I was intrigued. Enter Cross-Ties.
Maybe I'm used to reading longer fiction but I felt a bit rushed in this book. Scenes change and time passes quite rapidly. There were times and places that could have used a slower pace to really enjoy the sites, sounds, and smells of the different locations. For one example, at different times a character might travel across the entire Atlantic but the journey is implied between sentences.
Although brief, what's here certainly has a lot of heart. The main character Leah is likable and believable. As a reader, you do want to see her succeed and find happiness.
