Magic, Romance & More: A Collection of Four Paranormal Romantic Comedy Novellas

Rate this book
Magic, Romance & More is a collection of three light paranormal romantic comedy novellas

Witch

Tessa Von Hellengaard is a real witch. Magical spells aside, she’s snarky and selfish, and the other witches in her silent spell coven are fed up with her. Their plan to reform Tessa involves taking away her magic, saddling her with one hundred extra pounds, and sending her to a weight loss spa. For good measure they call in Liam Kennedy, a charming and sexy fairy godfather, to teach her some manners. Desperate to regain her magic and determined to shed the weight, Tessa soon realizes that protecting her heart from Liam will prove to be her greatest challenge.

Magic Wand

Fiona Cantrell is a woman on a mission. More aptly put, she's a Fairy Godmother on a mission. Her dream of moving to London is about to come true now that all that stands between her and her new job is a few unpacked suitcases. Or so she thinks until her old boss shows up with one more little task for her to complete before she leaves for Europe. Her new assignment involves a handsome cowboy named Cody, his two rascally nephews, and a mountain of laundry...all of which would be no problem for any self-respecting Fairy Godmother.

While Fiona manages to handle the laundry and the boys, she quickly learns that she's not immune to Cody's considerable charm. It takes everything she's got to stay focused on completing her task so she can head to London. But when tragedy strikes, Fiona realizes that it will take more magic than she has to try to save a life and mend her own broken heart.

Mermaid

Adamantly opposed to commercial whaling, Miranda happily trades her fin for human legs when she’s given the opportunity to work as a maid for a man in charge of public relations for a large Japanese whaling firm. Miranda soon finds out that she loves pedicures, favors bikinis over clamshells, and that she’s a natural disaster when it comes to human housework. There’s so much about the human world she doesn’t understand. Why does Justin Lockheed, her handsome boss, make her heart race and her knees weak? And just what is she supposed to do when it comes time to choose between advancing her cause and destroying his career?

This is an entertaining book with a trio of short stories. The author brings strong characters and weaves fun , enjoyable stories. They are brought to life with descriptive and detailed scenes , are well written and move fluidly. I enjoyed reading.

Witch Weigh:
WITCH WEIGH is the first book in the Special Gifts series. BTW: WITCH CHRISTMAS is a follow-up story with these same characters and I loved it too.

I loved the movie SHALLOW HAL. In it, a misogynistic jerk learns that women are more than the sum of their “pretty parts.” He learns to appreciate their intellect, humor, and personality beyond the joke. (As in, she’s ugly as a dog, but she has a nice personality). He is ‘cursed’ with seeing a woman’s inner beauty. So, the self-absorbed diva looks like a hag and the sweet, but over-weight girl-next-door’s charm is all that he can see.

Tessa’s treatment was sort of the opposite of that. It was similar in that she had to let go of her self-centeredness and narcissisms, but I think she had to learn more. She is the one cursed to be overweight and worn looking until she learns to give instead of demanding. Once she learned it wasn’t all about her, more came to her… more friendship, more respect, and more love. She also had to learn acceptance when her cat was turned into a dog as part of her lesson from the other witches. Her whole life was upended. It took a long time for her to figure it all out, because witch, with a B, really means stubborn!

I truly enjoyed the characters, the story, and the setting. In addition, we’ve now been introduced to Fiona, another Fairy Godmother, and Bethany, Cody’s sister, from MAGIC WAND RANCH.

Magic Wand Ranch:
MAGIC WAND RANCH is the second book in the Special Gifts series. I read this book first in the series and I was not warned that it was a continuation. That did cause some initial confusion, but I caught on quickly enough.

This is a very sweet and cute romance. I think I fell in love with the boys as much as, if not more than the adults! I was very entertained by this short listen (audiobook) and will definitely listen again. The conclusion was heartwarming and sigh-worthy. Cody is a total swoon of a cowboy!

I’m looking through my kindle to see if I have any more of Ms. Mickelson’s books!

Mermaid Inc.:
MERMAID INC. is the third book in the Special Gifts series. This one does not rely on characters from any previous story, so it can be read it any order. On the other hand, it seems there may be more to the story of Summer, Miranda’s best friend’s mother. I’d love to know if it has already been written and what happened!

What if The Little Mermaid was on land for more than boy-lust? Miranda’s fighting for a cause. She believes she can make a difference, even if she doesn’t know a toilet brush from a dingle-hopper! Luckily, Justin is taken by her beauty and her charisma enough to make him more curious about the woman than her resume.

A fairy tale story twisted around for adults (but still sweet); you know I loved it! Yes, it’s quirky and a little far-fetched, but sometimes that’s exactly what life needs. I invite you to suspend your reality and visit under the sea and by the sea as Justin meets Miranda. At one point, I was even sure I heard frogs singing “Kiss the Girl.”

Maid for Love:
MAID FOR LOVE is the fourth book in the Special Gifts series. This one also has no crossover characters and could be read in any order to the others.

What a unique gift Zoe has! The fun part is that she didn’t know that it also has a unique proviso (yes, I stole that word from the Genie in Aladdin). Her gift of removing memories will not work on one particular person.

This is a sweet and funny romance with a light touch of swoon that has me smiling days after I finished reading it.

Note: While I received this book as a gifted ARC via Booksprout, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

Witch Weigh
I had a really rough start with this book. I think a lot of it is because we don’t see most of the bad behavior Tessa’s accused of, the beginning of the book feels a whole lot like victim-blaming. What I saw was Tessa trying to defend herself and getting cut off at every turn. That made the punishment, particularly with no explanations about what was going on, feel really harsh to me. Somehow, I’d connected very closely with Tessa. Watching as everything she valued in her world be systematically taken apart in front of her broke my heart. I don’t really get the ending either. It happened too fast and way too easily. Liam needed to grovel a lot more. There’re also several plot lines that are left hanging open that I hope will be tied off in the following book.
Magic Wand Ranch
Fiona and her continuing intense dislike for Tessa meant I got off to a rocky start with this story. It becomes something quite sweet and funny, but it took me a bit to get to a point where I was actually cheering for Fiona. Cody does the cowboy hero image proud. He’s noble and caring and just what I wanted him to be. His nephews are everything I was expecting from this pair of imps, and they are the source of most of the comedy. I loved the ending, and I really enjoyed the way it redeemed a character that wasn’t my favorite when the story started.
Mermaid Inc.
This was an interesting take on the story of the Little Mermaid. It’s light and mostly fun. It’s probably due to the short length of the book, but there are plot holes you could pilot an ocean liner through. The character fell a little flat for me, but again I think that’s due to there not being more room to flesh them out. Miranda was quirky, if ill-prepared for her assignment. Justin was charmingly endearing with his issues around water. The ending happened far too fast for my preferences, but I liked that we get to see this pair’s happy ever after.
Maid for Love
I think this story is my favorite in the series. Even though Zoe is one of the most frustrating heroines with her pig-headed-ness, there’s something kind of inspiring about what she does with her gift. Michael is everything I look for in a rom-com hero: sweet, charming, quirky. Together they made my jaded little heart sigh. The meddling family members were comedy gold, and added so much to my enjoyment of this story.

First Book Set My Teeth on Edge...

This is a set of four paranormal romance novellas. Even though they are by the same author, I found them to be of variable quality. The first and second books share the same world while the others are separate, stand-alone paranormal romances. I have read other books by this author, her Christmas ones, and I actually adored them. I was expecting it to be the same with these, but I was put off by the first book in the set. Perhaps because I've been an overweight woman all my life, I had an issue with weight being a punishment in this book. I can understand the author, perhaps, wanting to use this as a plot device, but an author would really have to tread ground gently so as not to offend those of us who have always lived with this “punishment.” I do not feel like the author was successful at it. In this book, too, she needed to explain in better detail what Tessa did to merit her punishment, which was much more than just gaining 100 pounds. It just wasn't made as clear as it should have been, and therefore her punishment and the way she was treated in this book seemed to be too much. The second book was about a fairy godmother and her charge. The hero of the previous book, a fairy godfather, is essentially the heroine's boss. I liked this book better, especially watching the developing romance and the antics of the two boys. There is certainly a surprising twist at the end that pulls at the heartstrings, making this more than a light romantic comedy. So, all in all, I found this to be an uneven set of paranormal romances, but there were some good ones and elements.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Witch Weigh
I don’t normally read paranormal- Especially not one so completely immersed in witch, but I decided to try it. I really enjoyed this rom com. There are good lessons for life and the characters are great.

Magic Wand Ranch
This fairy/mortal romance was really great. I loved the boys and their shenanigans. The twists and the character development was great too.

Mermaids Inc
Besides Disney’s Little Mermaid, one never read a mermaid romance. This book read very well and I enjoyed it. It was definitely unique. There were good characters and a great storyline with some humor thrown in.

Maid for Love
This was a sweet romance. It was pretty normal with just a taste of paranormal. I liked the teenagers and their integral roles in the storyline. It was an enjoyable read.

This is a fun collection of four light paranormal romantic comedy novellas including: Witch Weigh, Magic Wand Ranch, Mermaid Inc, and Maid for Love, just enough to tickle your bunny bone! The blurb gives you a good recap of what each one is about if you want to pick and choose the order to read them. Or you can do it the absolute easiest way and start at page 1 – no decisions needed!

These are the perfect stress-relievers that will put a smile on your face as you get to know the characters. Humor is always my favorite addition to a good book! And there is a little bit of everything in here, too, for your complete satisfaction. Grab your copy and enjoy!

These novellas were okay. The things that jump out at me in a negative way (excessive typos, bad grammar) were NOT present (hooray!), but the things that make me really enjoy a book weren't present, either. The stories all had predictable plots, with steady to fast pacing and shallow characters. All the novellas are light-hearted. If you're looking for a quick, somewhat comedic romance, then this will probably check off all your boxes. Just don't expect too much out of it.

Great quick reads
It took me a few days to finish reading this collection not because it was not good but because I read a few books in between then I would pick up one of the stories for a change of pace. I loved these tales!! Fiona, Tessa, and sweet Miranda were great leading ladies with each story a unique and engaging read. I was sad when I had not more pieces to read. Great quick reads that I am pleased to recommend. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

They were fast-paced and the characters were very likable. I also liked that the stories were completely different from each other. I laughed a lot while reading these. I would definitely recommend these books to anyone who likes to read paranormal romantic comedy.

Four stories describing how paranormal people are tasked with a difficult situation, trying to change people's mind and heart to become better people.
While doing so, they inadvertently fall for their charges.
All stories are comedies, funny situations for all of them, although with a serious background. The characters are lovely, the stories light and fun.
